Feelings On Fogs?

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Oct. 14, 2020, 1:30 p.m. by Omniscience_is_life

I have always been on the side of Fogs in EDH, but I understand many people regard them as cards that'll be dead 80% of the time. With the recent release of Obscuring Haze I hope that more people will run fog effects, but I want to hear the general public's opinion on them. So how do YOU feel about fogs in commander?

VampDemigod says... #2

In commander, I’ll run one or two, but generally I prefer either repeatable fogs or ones on creatures, so they’re less of a dead card.

Though if I remember, there is a commander that has some effect related to the prevention of damage. I’d run as many fogs as possible in that deck.

Questing Beast? Yeah that guy will fog you up

That wasn’t the one I was thinking of, but that one too!

Fog effects are underrated

Why'd you have to go and mention Constant Mists? I said play fogs, not demon-spawn-cards!

Can’t find that commander. Slight chance I just misremembered angus or something. XD

Anyway DeinoStinkus I have to disagree with you. Fogs are better than mass indestructible when you’re behind, or up against a go-wide or trample wincon.

VampDemigod says... #9

Yes it’s conditional, yes indestructible has more uses, but neither is strictly better, in my opinion.

IMO fogs are useful to have in certain situations but I don't really use them much. I use them as an Angel's Grace effect if I want one but I've been thinking of building a turbo-fog deck that will use a lot of them. I'd rather just wrath than fog but using both effects can be useful.

I feel this is a good time to bring up 2 of my favorite under the radar fog effects for cmdr.

You're welcome

Fogs can be good and are typically underrated. Mandate of Peace is a good example of an underplayed card.

A fog can stop a craterhoof or shutdown that voltron commander that was just given double strike.

Also, nothing is better than playing Batwing Brume on a kiki-jiki combo player.

"So, I win?"

"How many are you swinging with?"

"A million? Doesn't matter, you're not in blue. 10 million then."

"Awesome, you lose."

You only lose 1 life for each creature YOU CONTROL that's attacking. Though it would be funny to just nuke the board.

I personally think Fog effects even if repeatable are losing by design. And quite overrated especially in EDH.

What is the design goal of using them? I think not losing is better than winning?

Outside of very narrow archetypes, fog just does not win games. The last time I saw a decent turbo fog was like the end of 2018 maybe. And that was in a 60 card format. I have never seen an EDH deck built around fog win a 4 player or more game of EDH.

Given, there are fun fog cards and fun niche moments where you can turn the tables on someone but that does not make them consistant or reliable as a strategy.

VampDemigod says... #21

The point of fogs is that not losing is better than losing. Also, they let you slow your opponent’s tempo, by negating their attack after you swing out. I’ve also used repeatable fogs to stack up my opponent’s creatures for turns, before casting a wipe.

Like this is a great example of a fun, niche Fog effect that I really like. I ran a playset in a spider tribal deck and eventually dropped them for removal. But I think this card is amazing: Arachnogenesis.

But, consistantly it sat in my hand or at best, I just decide to cast it even though it wasnt needed really.

I agree with you that outside aforementioned Questing Beast or Batwing Prume in specific situations, fogs do not win you the game.

I also do not believe they should be played as a strategy. However, 1 or 2 in your deck can prove invaluable. They really help to stop a player's Overrun effects, which edh had plenty, with the added bonus of almost never being expected.

I've seen several games get saved by a well timed fog. It many circumstances they act as an uncounterable counter that buys the table another turn or let's the game keep going.

Edit: Looks like Vamp beat me to the post. Damn my slow phone typing skills.

I agree with you both, I am not a hater. It just usually seems cards like that get cut from decks as I fine tune or play them.

Awwww spooderfog!

VampDemigod says... #26

...ngl, that kinda sounds like a swear word. XD

October 14, 2020 5:46 p.m.

RiotRunner789 says... #27

I get that. I want to fit Mandate of Peace in a couple decks but would either have to cut a synergistic piece or a counter. They really need to make edh a 101 card format.

October 14, 2020 5:47 p.m.

MagicMarc says... #28

The second line of Mandate of Peace makes it even better than a Fog effect. That is a great control option for Isochron Scepter abuse like Orim's Chant. Why is it 50 cents American when Chant is like 18 US dollars?

Heck, it even affects all players?

October 14, 2020 5:55 p.m.

VampDemigod says... #29

Because they can still cast cards at sorcery speed during main phase 1.

October 14, 2020 6:05 p.m.

MagicMarc says... #30

Right, It's not as good as Chant for 1 vs 1 and when it's not your turn maybe. So Chant is still better to lock an opponent down. But, if your deck uses it to protect your own plays then during your turn, Mandate is better than Chant to protect a big play during multiplayer games. Since it affects all players.

October 14, 2020 6:29 p.m.

Ya can't Rift on end step if you can't cast spells... maybe blank a small attack just because the next player is in blue, with Mandate!

October 14, 2020 6:32 p.m.

Stellar addition to a natural disaster deck!!! 100% in favor. ;)

Kami of False Hope

In conjunction with Sun Titan

Against Uril, the Miststalker

Anyway, fogs are the best defense against Voltron decks, there's no cure for lethal commander damage. You should play them only if your meta allows it. It's true that a fog won't win you the game, but neither will a counterspell. Their function is not (just) to "not lose", they are best used to prevent someone else from winning with combat. Fogging someone's Craterhoof Behemoth turn will make you the hero of the table, and because most people think lowly of those effects, nobody will expect or play around them.

Use them sparingly, along with the element of surprise, if your friends like to win with creatures, for the best results.

Make them scared to swing out if you have a green mana up ;)

Spore Frog Is a problem in the muldrotha decks and the merrin decks

Optimator says... #35

I feel like I can never find a spot for fogs (Spore Frog aside) but I do think they're quite underrated in EDH. How many times have I needed one more turn to win? Lots. Would I have had a guaranteed fog in my hand if my deck runs one or two? Probably not, but I could have!

October 19, 2020 5:34 p.m.

griffstick says... #36

Just lost a game today... Would have won if I only had a fog to play. Game over turn 7. I needed 8.
