foil commander deck

Commander Deck Help forum

After looking for foil copies of all the cards in this deck, mono red chaos, I have found that there are 10 cards that currently do not have foil versions. When you are in this situation, do you replace the cards with other foils or just let them in the deck anyways? I am about to place an order for a bunch of the foils I need, and am not sure if I should just look for other cards or not. The cards without a foil version are Dormant Volcano, Smoldering Crater, Illicit Auction, Commander's Sphere, Witch Hunt, Winds of Change, Ruby Medallion, Gamble, Warmonger Hellkite, and Basalt Monolith

If you have any suggestions for cards to replace any of these with, I will gladly look at them. Also, I may one day get the foil judge promo Wheel of Fortune and I will definitely find a place for that card, but it is a bit out of my price range right now.

So, let me get this straight. You are thinking about changing out fantastic EDH cards because you can't get a foil for them? DAMN I'm OCD and a foil whore, but even I draw the line somewhere. lol

I know there are some people who make foil tokens, maybe you could use a similar process to make these foil?

There are some pretty creative alters out there, or do some nice full art proxy foils. There are quite a few techniques out there that look pretty slick and a huge proxy community that does nice high res work for printing. I've got some full art foil dual lands that work well for me.

I foil EVERYTHING but if something isn't offered foil I put it in anyway. I prefer competitiveness over foil. I make competitive first and then foil out. Most is really easy to foil out.

I also made an all White Border EDH though, that is impossible to foil.

I would say, just accept that some things just won't be foil for now. I understand your pain because my Slivers deck is completely foiled out except for Sliver Queen, she wasn't ever printed as foil. Literally one card out of 100 that isn't offered foil. It is ridiculously troublesome but you have to think, what is Slivers without her? She is very important to the deck. Viability is better than foil and in my thought process, it is okay as long as the card isn't possible in foil. Nothing you can do about that. If it is offered in foil then I will own it. It's not okay to have non foil cards that are possible in foil if the deck has them. That's just how I think.

I primarily play competitive so that is a factor. If I didn't I would just proxy a foil. Proxy isn't allowed in competitive so that's not possible.

iAzire I mean, if you gotta have one card nonfoil, there is a bit of symmetry to have mb foil and commander nonfoil. I mean, Idk, but I would rather have my commander be nonfoil then one card mb. What do you think?

Also, to answer the thread question, never sacrifice playability for style, unless you're building a theme deck.

I hate to say it Monsmtg, Sliver Queen isn't my Commander, she is part of the 99. I run Sliver Overlord as the Commander just like all Sliver decks should. The Overlord makes for the most consistent leader, some others may win certain games but the Overlord is the most consistent Commander for Slivers.

iAzire, Oh yeah, I'm hoping to get a Sliver Overlord for my sliver deck. For some reason I didn't think of that.

thanks everyone for the comments. I think I'm gonna eventually try to get foil alters of these cards. Does anyone know of a good place to get these done?

I do not know of a place that does foils. Getting proxy is easy but if you actually ask the company, (I do), they usually say that the foils are lower quality and the thickness is off. In order to use them you would probably have to run a full proxy deck.

With that said, I don't spend a lot of time looking for proxy online. That is just my personal experience.

EDIT: If I ever order a full proxy deck, it will be one that is just ridiculously expensive. You know a deck that is best using a lot of expensive cards that I probably can't buy fast.

You can look on YouTube for a way to make your own proxies. It might take some practice but it looks like removing the ink from existing foils is pretty easy.

Yeah I've blanked junk foils with my friend. All you really need is nail polish remover & a paper towel.

Make sure proxies and altered cards are ok with your playgroups before trying to get them.

I only say this because in my play groups we do not allow proxies or altered art. It seems snobbish but we always ran into the problem of someone getting a card altered and the text being covered up and with it being an old card some players didnt know what it did so the player would essentially just make up what it did or wouldnt know himself what the card did.

Deckologist, that's very interesting; out of curiosity, where do foreign cards and pre-errata'd old cards stand in light of that rule? (Some old cards have been simplified with oracle text, and some have been "fixed", like Candelabra of Tawnos.)

The reason I think your playgroup is interesting is because my playgroup solves these issues in the game by googling cards, which has pros and cons.

We have 3 tiers of players. Everyone knows their tier and when we see that they have a higher understanding of cards we usually get them into more advanced games. It may sound like an elitist approach but we've seen a dramatic increase in "fun" and less complaining after games. For errata questions we usually have people watching over games that can tell the player what the card officially says. We have a large player base with a lot of advisors on standby so it works.

It makes me sad that one of my favorite commanders I run, Sliver Queen will NEVER have a chance to be foiled, I not as concerned about the rest of the deck being foil...but I always prefer for the commander to be foil. u_u

I have to agree. I think the restricted list is stupid. I mean I understand some cards never being printed again like Power 9 and ABUR Duals but Sliver Queen isn't actually worth that much.

The limit for what gets put on the restricted list should be higher. Avacyn, Angel of Hope and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite were both higher than Queen. I'm not sure what the current prices are but I believe Avacyn dropped after her reprint in From The Vault.

Regardless, Queen and other cards on the list should be reprinted. I just want a regular size Queen that came in the Commander's Arsenal. It irritates me when I see the Oversize card.
