Deck Update —Jan. 15, 2023

The deck needs more consistent card advantage.

I’ve decided to cut Nesting Dragon and to cut Keldon Flamesage. Nesting Dragon is a lot of mana for something that’s not super important for the deck. Keldon Flamesage is fun but I never really got to use the ability much or consistently.

I’ve added Idol of Oblivion and Visions of Phyrexia these both will help a ton with card advantage.

I am also cutting my Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx for a new deck I’ve built - a moon black superfriends deck.

I can't seem to get some of the baldur gate cards i want like Ancient Copper Dragon or Rain of Riches but this is what im currently looking at in my previously mentioned build of mono red treasures Bludgeon Brawl is in the deck for max value when i have a few treasures and a payoff for multiple equipment like the commander but without a way to tutor for it i haven't seen it in testing yet. Please take a look Id like to see your thoughts!

Downhill Charge is my recent tech.

I used to run that! I cut it once I started adding more and more non basic lands. Pretty neat card though!

21 mountains = 60% of your mana base. That's not enough to make it work? My ratio is 50%. Getting +X for free at instant speed has been clutch in testing.

I just think for a one time effect not having 80% mountains it’s not worth it, better repeatable use cards like blackblade reforged, nettlecyst, strata Scythe and two-handed axe.

Unless the deck is nearly all basics or has ways to keep recasting Downhill Charge I just don’t think it’s consistent enough for this build.

To add my thoughts into the mix. Downhill charge is great in a vacuum but 1 time effect can be bad in edh. There's already the fatal frenzy and Unleash Fury are perhaps better in this shell. Better in like a Zada, Hedron Grinder deck. Or where sacrifice a mountain is not a bad thing.

Not a ton of good Maraxus tech in Dominaria United. However I did find one little hidden gem you may be interested in.

Keldon Flamesage - if you tap Maraxus of Keld on the Keldon Flamesage enlist trigger, you can dig extremely deep in the deck for a free spell. This could be super helpful for getting something like Chandra's Ignition or even just a simple Fling. Plus you can then just fling the Keldon Flamesage instead of Maraxus.

Without looking into it much. Enlist is a good mechanic for the deck. I think there is a betrayer cycle that let's you pay life instead of mana for your color pips. This will help with keeping perms untapped. I'll have to look at more from the new set later.

So I looked into the new set. Overall. Enlist is a really exciting effect. Fling 2ce. Essentially in a turn with certain boardstates. Any of the enlist cards would be decent but these two stand out.

Balduvian Berserker enlists and dies in combat as a 2 for 1 most of the time.

Keldon Flamesage as you mentioned is a great include

Cards to look at beyond enlist

Defiler of Instinct honestly not exciting here. The number of red pips in your spells doesn't make it more then ok.

Weatherlight Compleated interesting potential scry / card draw engine. You do have a decent number of creatures and have the potential to make tokens. It would take some play testing to see if it deserves the spot.

Also how's your deck playing. Is it going off and surprising people or are you facing some problems? I built my equipment/treasure deck this deck inspired me to make on mtgo and it was a good time but I'm holding off on building it in paper unless I can play more magic irl. Work has me jailed practicly.

XD your list is pretty solid beyond Nesting Dragon (hehe) perhaps. I don't know where you would cut is maybe Imposing Grandeur working for you? Or the Heart-Piercer Manticore perhaps?

The decks playing great! A few people in my playgroup say it’s their favorite deck that I play. Imposing Grandeur puts in work, I’m glad you convinced me to add it. I’ve pulled out a good chunk of wins, mostly with Chandra's Ignition general flings and Reckless Fireweaver.

Nesting Dragon is mostly a playgroup specific include, my group runs a lot of edict effects. The eggs buy more time to prevent having to sac Maraxus so that I can actually fling him.

I definitely want to add the Keldon enlist card

Glad to see it's working well. It's such a synergy focused deck that has many different parallel plans. Looks fun as hell to pilot.

Imposing Grandeur is such a wierd card. Would suck in most of my decks but here it's a less equal Wheel of Fortune. Ends up suprisingly good considering people mostly play mostly low cmc commander's. Me included.

But I still don't know where to tell you to cut. But here are some ideas. As you have piloted it maybe you can figure out what is better.

The deck is gotten to the point it's full of gas. Id suggest not cutting the pump spells. Cutting down some of the pump spells might be ok but you only have a few and the keldon cards best hit in practice will probably be literally a tutor for one of them to use a Fling effect in hand after blocks/combat.

Now I'd we take it like that. For now. How about replacing Outpost Siege with the Keldon Flamesage take it as a card draw slot? It might be bad 50% of the time.

Do we take enlist as a Fling esc effect and replace Heart-Piercer Manticore or Grab the Reins perhaps.

Or is Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs or Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith not pulling enough weight perhaps and you want a different effect. Maybe more so does the rocks help. Does kazul come into play early enough to matter

Solid build, +1!

I’ve been trying to find the right chemistry for playing maraxus. It’s awesome to see another deck out there. Would you mind checking my bike out and giving me some advice? The links down below. I use a bit more of a red chaos theme.

Also have you considered using Altar of the Brood as an alternate win-con? With all other tokens you could do some damage.

Love Maraxus and this deck is brilliant, very cool strategy you came up with for this deck!

Any thoughts on good powestone cards?

November 26, 2022 10:22 a.m.

IHATENAMES

Howdy!

There are a few Powerstone cards I am considering for this specific deck, sometimes I wish it had some other colors in it because there are some really neat Powerstone cards that can’t go in a mono red deck.

I have three favs for this deck:

Karn, Living Legacy - solid +1 and if you can use his ultimate it will put in work with the treasures.

The Brothers' War - that third life counter can do a lot of damage with this deck

Visions of Phyrexia - I like the card advantage aspect of this more than the Powerstone side.

Do you have any favorites?

Visions of Phyrexia is essentially Outpost Siege I knew about that one. I'm going to have to decide one I get my hands on it which is better in a few of my decks.

The rest if the powerstone cards I didn't really find all that good. But these 2 you mentioned seem worthwhile. Could definitely deserve a spot either card. Not sure how powerful brothers war 2nd part is but I have high expectations.
