The deck is built around the discard and looting abilities of Putrid Imp and Merfolk Looter. They let you discard creatures that can return from the graveyard and madness spells at instant speed and gives you great card advantage.

Creatures: Haunted Dead, Scourge of Nel Toth, Prized Amalgam and Gravecrawler are cheap to cast from the graveyard . Wonder give them evasion.

Madness: When needed, discarding for free and at instant speed let you counter spells (Circular Logic), destroy creatures (Murderous Compulsion) and prevent damage (Just the Wind).

Card advantage: With Squee, Goblin Nabob, Merfolk Looter's ability basically becomes "tap, draw a card". At worst, it forces you to discard a card that is probably madness or can be reanimated anyway.
