How do you handle Nihil Spellbomb?

Asked by Minister 13 years ago

I've seen alot of fun and solid graveyard decks lately, and I'm going to build a Rock Graveyard style pretty soon. my only problem is that blasted Nihil Spellbomb . As soon as it hits the field, I'm pretty much done for. If I try to blow it up while it's in play, the opponent can just activate its ability and sac it. If he sacs it to activate its ability, I can't target it to stop it.

Is there any way to handle Nihil Spellbomb ? Other than countering it as it comes into play, that is.

maiden77 basically just stated the only way. To get rid of it completely (while it isnt on the battlefield...) would be Surgical Extraction

Other than Mental Misstep is Stony Silence , other than that I don't really know.

The MTG Q&A section is really for questions regarding the rules of Magic, not to discuss cards/strategies btw...

If you're planning to play Standard (I only say that because Nihil Spellbomb 's is valid in Standard), then you can get around it by having either Phyrexian Revoker or Stony Silence under your control.

However, since you're planning a Zombie deck, Stony Silence probably wouldn't work too well... Phyrexian Revoker is colourless though, and being a Horror it sort of fits a dark theme. Perhaps a Zombie deck with an Artifact twist would be a fun option?

If not, then if you go multi colour (not sure how well it would work in a Zombie deck though), perhaps Krosan Grip or Trickbind would help you here... The only other thing I can think of here also involves White though, Due Respect would cause the Spellbomb to enter the battlefield tapped, so that gives you some extra time to get rid of it first.

Haha... When I started writing my comment, the only one that had been posted was maiden77's first comment. :) That's just downright freaky.

Minister, you commented:

"If he sacs it to activate its ability, I can't target it to stop it."

So why can't you use an instant artifact destruction after opponent taps Nihil Spellbomb ? The instant would resolve first, no?

The artifact's ability still goes off. Because it is sacrificed, the sac hits the graveyard first. There would be no need to destroy it when it's already going to the graveyard, if they can even hit it. (Because it's on its way to the yard already.)

@shedidthistome: Part of the cost of activating Nihil Spellbomb 's ability is sacrificing it. When you get priority to respond to the activation, the Bomb is already in the graveyard, so it can't be targeted by something like Naturalize , etc.

Even if the Bomb didn't have to sacrifice itself as a cost (which would be wildly powerful), destroying it in response to the activation wouldn't help. Once an ability is activated and on the stack, removing the source of the ability doesn't do anything. The ability is still on the stack, and the only way to get rid of it is to counter it.

Just a thought, but another option here is to have Hexproof as a player. Witchbane Orb would work (or Leyline of Sanctity , but I'm not sure of a W/B Zombie deck). Afterall, it does say "Target player".

Problem is, I honestly don't think Black by itself really has much to deal with the Spellbomb once it's been set in motion...

@Rhadamanthus, so along those same lines of ruling... with Brain Weevil , can an opponent play and resolve a creature removal card such as Go for the Throat after I declare sacrificing it?

If you're asking about whether he can try to kill the Weevil in response to you activating it, then no. As in the Spellbomb example, the next time anyone would get priority to respond to the activation of the ability is after all the costs have been paid, so that means Brain Weevil is already in the graveyard, and can't be targeted with something like Go for the Throat .
