Beating protection from colors

Asked by Blazer70 7 years ago

I keep getting destroyed by my friend's Etched Champion . I'm just wondering... what are my options once it gets onto the field? I know I can't directly target with my spells...and I don't have enough cards to stop him from constantly placing artifact lands. Can I block with a creature with enough power to destroy it? Can I use a card like Pyroclasm to destroy it because it doesn't directly target?

Protection prevents Damage, Equipping, Enchanting, Blocking, and Targeting from sources of the protection type. You would need to block with a colorless creature or use Kozilek's Return because it is colorless. Pyroclasm is a red source, so the damage would be prevented.

Other ways to remove a Champion that has landed include board wipes such as Wrath of God and Shatterstorm, sacrifice effects such as Liliana of the Veil, exile effects such as Final Judgment, and mass bounce such as Cyclonic Rift.

Or use Ghostfire if you're playing red.

Protection from... also doesn't work against global effects, so something that would, say, return all creatures with a certain casting cost to their owner's hands, you could get Etched Champion with that.

Or just rattle off a Wrath of God or a Damnation and be done with it. ;)

Pyroclasm can kill Etched Champion, but won't normally. Casting something like Unstable Footing will stop the damage prevention portion of Protection so that untargeted damage like Pyroclasm, Volcanic Fallout, or Pyrohemia can get rid of it. Also casting the spell after the Campion blocks a colored creature will let combat damage hit it. Otherwise destroying enough artifacts to turn off Metalcraft, blocking with a colorless creature, or using a board wipe are you best options. Colorless targeted removal like Scour from Existence or Unstable Obelisk also work.
