How to deal with a god?

Standard forum

Posted on Oct. 6, 2013, 9:37 p.m. by Heroine

since Theros release, I have seen gods played in decks in standard, and have been puzzling over how to defeat an indestructible, troublesome card like that. I can obviously keep it as an enchantment by keeping the board clear on my opponents side, but I haven't puzzled out how to eliminate such a threat.

I dunno, maybe I am misunderstanding some aspect of Indestructible, but it seems like the gods are a bit of a game-breaking mechanic, even if they are cool in theory.

Thanks for any help

Moved to Standard.

Cards that exile enchantments or force a player to sacrifice a permanent can be used to reasonable effect. You also have the option of using cards like Detention Sphere to lock the Gods down.

I have found Detention Sphere to be pretty efficient. Aside from that, you need to rely on what in your color scheme exiles, and you are limited there as well. White gives you Glare of Heresy , but that only deals with Heliod. Blue lets you do things like Turn / Burn or Curse of the Swine . Green can Selesnya Charm them away when animated, but that leaves the problem of they already have a big board presence. Black and Red...I think they may not deal with gods so well or I am having a mental block on what to use.

Red has pretty much no way to deal with the gods due to lack of enchantment removal and unable to burn them because they're indestructible.

Black has sacrifice cards like Far / Away and Devour Flesh , but only if the gods are creatures. Like red, black lacks enchantment removal.

So yeah, the gods supremely trump black and red decks.

Turn them into bird's before they even hit play. Swan Song

Swan Song is viable, but this is a matter of blue. What are you playing? We can better answer then.

Fade into antiquity is a powerhouse in my Jund deck. And every time some a-hole drops a god, I play fade and then they make a shitty sad face. It's actually pretty funny to watch.

well, judging from these answers, its looks like its a bad thing that I typically run a red, black, or red/back deck. :P

I do have a blue deck I am starting work on, and I know I have plenty of stuff to counter and what not with...

If your playing black or red. Just keep his devotion down by removing his other thing. If he can't keep his devotion high it stays an enchantment.

If you're playing B/R you could Act of Treason the god if it's a creature, attack with the god, and then use Tymaret, the Murder King to sacrifice the god while you control it. It's a little less likely to happen, but it's a solution.

@hiddengibbons The gods aren't artifacts, they're enchantments. That would work on the weapons though.

Devour Flesh is pointless, what's the chances that the god is their only creature? About 0%.

Swan Song for sure. Much easier to deal with a 2/2 flier than an indestructible creature

If only Erase was still in standard. It's still fun in eternal formats to take out their God with a one-mana instant.

Merciless Eviction would do the trick regardless if its a god or there legendary enchantment equipment.

October 10, 2013 12:27 a.m.

PeterDale says... #25

Problem with Merciless is if you have your own God or what not its gone too. Also he said Red/Black ways to get them off the board. I will again note forget dealing directly with the God just nuke his creater base so he doesn't get the devotion.

Oops, I just realized Shattering Blow won't work as the gods are enchantment creatures and not artifact enchantment creatures.

Depends on your Rakdos Build. Are you burning a lot of critters to death? If they can get board presence Death's Approach is a fun way to kill a god for 1mana. Liliana of the Dark Realms is brilliant at god control. Red Black is probably the hardest to kill gods with but it kills everything else pretty easily

December 19, 2013 12:22 a.m.

Fade into Antiquity & Turn / Burn are my preferred methods, or just Dissolve it before it hits the board. And if they play the counter war, Counterflux to win that said war.

Executioner's Swing is also a means of dealing with Thassa, God of the Sea or Purphoros, God of the Forge and the rest if you deal a bit of damage to them beforehand. Admittedly the conditions are a little annoying but it can still work quite well. My preferred method is getting rid of all the devotion surrounding them because when they aren't creatures they aren't as much of a threat other than that Celestial Flare has worked well for me.

December 20, 2013 11:47 a.m.

Black and red just have to use removal on the creatures supplying devotion to the god and keep it from being a creature. Liliana of the Dark Realms 's -3 can kill a god too.

Someone said Act of Treason . Chances are unless the god is Purphoros, God of the Forge it will not be a creature after it switches control and wouldn't be able to be sacrificed.

Although it's not in his colours, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Selesnya Charm . Versatile, and kills Gods.

December 20, 2013 12:17 p.m.

harrydemon117 says... #36

@SharuumNyan:

That only works if your devotion to its color is enough. Once it goes to your side of the field, if you fail to meet the devotion requirement it ceases to be a creature (harder to permanents other than creatures in standard currently).

Schuesseled thats where ur wrong, I played a deck with all kill spells erebos was the only creature with 2 underground connections and swinging made them sac it to devour flesh so its about a 3% chance ;)

Curse of the Swine let them all be creatures then turn them into pigs then Supreme Verdict lol
