Hi everyone!

We've been chatting about Ixalan here for a while, but on 21 Aug Wizards got into the act with four promo cards (and some upcoming tokens):

And then on 28 Aug they posted a BUNCH more:

So let's talk Ixalan!

Argy says... #1

clayperce you slay me every time you say that.

I never see anyone else respond. Does anyone else get it?

clayperce you slay me every time you write that.

I never see people respond. Do you think anyone else gets it?

It's now my favourite lore joke.

clayperce says... #3

Argy,
I suspect most folks get it, but are too busy rolling their eyes laughing hysterically to respond :-)

Maybe not my favorite EVER, but certainly up there. And I'm VERY much looking forward to tilting people by saying stuff like "Oooh, nice Dragon!" every time they play a Dinosaur.

Shane says... #4

I get it. Although I didn't at first lol

Argy says... #5

Sorry for the double post.

Hotel internet.

Shane welcome to our pirate circle.

I'm seeing a 2/2 Dinosaur with flying and menace for ... So now Dinosaurs and Pirates both have 3 gold uncommons: new thing, Belligerent Brontodon, Raging Swordtooth, Deadeye Plunderers, Dire Fleet Captain, and Marauding Looter. Whereas Merfolk and Vampires only have one each, Shapers of Nature and Call to the Feast.

Normally we'd obviously get a (limited fliers archetype?) and a (limited explore archetype?) uncommon, but I think in this case it would be cool to get another uncommon for both Merfolk and Vampires so they have more tribal support. Probably not gonna happen, but the color balance is actually the same if they do that... I'm not sure how badly that would screw up draft/sealed though. Still, I think it would be ideal.

September 9, 2017 6:44 p.m.

Well, I get it now. I agree with Angrath - dinosaurs do look like dragons! lol.

September 9, 2017 6:55 p.m.

LOL, the name of that W/R dino on mtgsalvation right now is "Russian Pterodactyl".

September 9, 2017 7:17 p.m.

Its name is Sky Terror. Scared yet?

September 9, 2017 7:29 p.m.

Argy says... #10

It's name will now always be "Russian Pterodactyl" to me.

September 9, 2017 9:30 p.m.

filthyc4sual says... #11

I get it, it just isn't funny.

September 9, 2017 11:20 p.m.

DarkLaw says... #12

Likewise. It was a decent attempt at a joke the first time. Afterwards it just bored me.

Besides which, the FlyNo is pretty much just a worse colorshifted Jhessian Infiltrator to me. Minus flying making it vulnerable to some cards and invulnerable to others.

HARDsofty says... #13

Standard dinosaurs is going to be a thing.

September 10, 2017 12:08 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #14

bendjohnson Agreed, the only debate on that front is will it be Gruul, Selesnya or Naya. Alot of locals in my town feel Naya is the way to go; but Gruul is second

September 10, 2017 2:04 p.m.

Naya all the way down!

windlnk says... #16

I've actually been planning out a boros dino deck which is looking to have some merit.

September 10, 2017 2:58 p.m.

Argy says... #17

Boros or gtfo

You can easily do three colours though, with Unclaimed Territory.

September 10, 2017 4:29 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #18

Problem with Boros is that you only have one enemy pair lands in this format

September 10, 2017 7:21 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #19

And the walker doesn't do enough. Some say the Boros walker is the worst of the three

September 10, 2017 7:21 p.m.

Zaueski says... #20

It absolutely is. Huatli is one of the worst walkers I've seen in a while. Even Ajani does more than Huatli

September 10, 2017 7:30 p.m.

Qolorful says... #21

The boros walker probably isn't the worst. They are all good at different things. Jace is the cheapest, and is probably going to be solid in go wide strategies like the merfolk seem to have, but could be playable in control I suppose. Vraska has the strongest abilities, but is designed in such a way as to make it difficult to fit he into any of the archetypes that ixalan provides, and will probably have to go exclusively in abzan or sultai control, which would be funky, while Hultai seems to be the most direct. She needs dinosaurs to be good, and without dinosaurs she's the worst, but with them she is very powerful

September 10, 2017 7:31 p.m.

Ryjo says... #22

Boros has Inspiring Vantage and will have Stone Quarry (from the Huatli PW deck) in standard, so it has 2 duals, though the combination of them is weaker than the duals that will be in for allied colors.

September 10, 2017 7:49 p.m. Edited.

Qolorful says... #23

Seems like allied colors have had better lands since I started playing the game tbh

September 10, 2017 8:05 p.m.

snotice says... #24

Qolorful: they pretty much always have and will based on the way Wizards puts out sets and designs things.

September 10, 2017 9:08 p.m.

Argy says... #25

Things were better when we had the Creature lands ... but they have been taken away and replaced with nothing good.

I think Unclaimed Territory is supposed to make up for that.

September 10, 2017 11:16 p.m.

snotice says... #26

Though, a Cavern of Souls like ability in addition to the tap for any color mana would have been better. I guess no more $40 to $50 lands for players to have in standard

September 11, 2017 1:59 a.m.

HARDsofty says... #27

Can't wait til Friday when the whole set gets revealed!

So this just happened

September 11, 2017 11:02 a.m.

Equip to Sky Terror. :)

September 11, 2017 11:04 a.m.

This card makes me a little sad since Revel in Riches shares its CMC my hopes for a semi competitive Treasure deck are slowly dwindling. However, casting this with riches on the board could mean game over :)

September 11, 2017 11:06 a.m.

windlnk says... #31

I say hand it to Slither Blade get an easy activation turn 3.

September 11, 2017 11:06 a.m.

AgentGreen says... #32

That's a weird equipment, but it has a MASSIVE payoff if you can get by the two plants

September 11, 2017 11:07 a.m.

Qolorful says... #33

Turn 4 7 drop Dinos are a thing now

September 11, 2017 11:14 a.m.

snotice says... #34

This set is one of the silliest sets I've seen. Nonetheless, the value is there!

September 11, 2017 11:15 a.m.

Oh boy, a new toy for my Sygg deck!

Also, haven't seen this beauty posted yet:

September 11, 2017 11:16 a.m.

Qolorful says... #36

Silly set that will probably end up being the most fun, and most well written sets in a long time lol

September 11, 2017 12:31 p.m.

Hmmm.

Treasure control? The drawback here may be too severe if I can't keep the board in check.

September 11, 2017 12:32 p.m.

Haven't seen anyone post this yet, unfortunately I don't know how to post pictures;

Legion's Landing

Legendary Enchantment

When ~ enters the battlefield, create a 1/1 white vampire creature token with lifelink.

When you attack with three or more creatures, transform ~.

Adanto, The First Fort

Legendary Land

: Add to your mana pool.

: Create a 1/1 white vampire creature token with lifelink.

saj0219 says... #40

LittleBlueHero are you thinking in Commander? or just Standard? Because in Standard, I'm not sure that the drawback on Trove of Temptation is meaningful. Consider: if it would benefit your opponent to attack you, they're going to attack you whether a card tells them they have to or not. If it would be detrimental for them to attack you, they have to anyway. Granted, I don't know if the cost of the card is worth the payoff, but I think that is more problematic than the drawback.

Of course, in commander, the drawback presents an entirely different (and far more serious) issue...

September 11, 2017 12:41 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #41

Surrak_and_Roll If anything that land is fuel for Oketra, but it doesn't seem all that great; that's a pretty heavy cost for a 1/1

September 11, 2017 12:57 p.m.

saj0219 I was thinking commander primarily.

However, I am not opposed to building a fun FNM deck around treasure :)

September 11, 2017 1:08 p.m.

pskinn01 says... #43

Works in a control shell. End of their turn, make a 1/1 life linker. Or in any token shell (like soul sisters in modern), you draw land and still have ability to create a 1/1 life linker.

September 11, 2017 1:09 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #44

Works better if paired with Anointed Procession

September 11, 2017 1:38 p.m.

Bishop of the Bloodstained3BBWhen ~ enters the battlefield, target opponent loses 1 life for each Vampire you control.3/3

B/W vampires: my greatest desire.

Also we have a 2/1 merfolk for 1G that explores.

September 11, 2017 3:58 p.m.

sylvannos says... #46

@LittleBlueHero: God that card is insane. People keep saying it's a worse Mana Drain but it's not. It's a better Rewind.

The thing might even be Modern playable if you jam it into Mono-Blue Tron.

September 11, 2017 4:48 p.m.

Dredge4life says... #47

That card costs double Blue. U Tron can't reliably cast it, which is unfortunate. It's cool though. Might see play in Scapeshift.

September 11, 2017 4:55 p.m.

DarkLaw says... #48

Rewind was a "free" counter though, Spell Swindle isn't reliably free.

An extra Fungusaur helps dinos (in commander) quite a bit. Redundancy is good.

Lotus Vale land is "alright" in casual commander, but very easy to hose. Plus, it's probably too slow and unreliable in literally any competitive environment. You'll need to warp your deck construction just to flip it, and we don't even have Steelshaper's Gift in standard (not that it would help equipment much, most aren't very good).

September 11, 2017 5:43 p.m.

smackjack says... #49

This card has the ability I was hoping for the most, a Lotus Petal token each turn for my Stasis deck Tipping the scale. Too bad its a cmc4 card tho, Ral Zarek is just better. Was hoping for a blue or white card with the ability so i could cut red..

September 12, 2017 5:13 a.m.

sylvannos says... #50

@DarkLaw: How is it not free? You get the tokens right away. It's not delayed like Mana Drain.
