The Prismatic Piper

What do people think of the new card The Prismatic Piper? It seems like an interesting and fun card, to say the least.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but The Prismatic Piper’s color identify is still colorless, right?

VampDemigod says... #2

Of course, if it’s color identity isn’t changed by its ability, then it’s main purpose will probably be with janky shenanigans with the colors of cards.

Its color is a characteristic defining ability, and thus is part of its color identity. The card is specifically designed for draft purposes--it is a fallback in case you have a bunch of X colored cards, but no X colored commander.

In any non-draft format, Piper is strictly worse than any other mono-colored partner, which we will be getting a whole host of.

Caerwyn

I could see it being useful if, and only if someone wants a fully colorless to cast commander, perhaps for some infinite-colorless combo. Not competitively, but there could be a value to it for some casual combos!

Does this mean you can have Ley Weaver and other choice non legendary partners as your cmdr?

The "Partner with" ability is not the same as the "Partner" keyword. The new commander partners won't change anything about how the "Partner with" ability behaves

August 23, 2020 12:37 p.m.

MagicMarc says... #8

Also, nothing has changed the legendary creature rule of commander either. Both cards must still qualify independently to be a commander without the Partner keyword.

The partner keyword only provides the ability to have 2 commanders at the same time in a deck if both have the keyword "Partner".

I feel like it's color would be what you choose it to be? I feel like that's what it's ability does. The card can be any color.

Can we talk about how cool this card is though. How unique it is. Also how much like Paradise Plume is looks.

DeinoStinkus I believe you mean, 'the first common Legend to be halfway playable in anything'.

Ol' Pipes isn't ever going to be played outside of hyper-budget brews and CMR limited. Why? Because why on earth would you take him rather than a partner of the color you want that has... actual rules text? You wouldn't. If I'm in Orzhov and I want to be Mardu, I'll get Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder or Vial Smasher the Fierce. Cards that aren't 3/3s for 5 with no text.

August 23, 2020 3:37 p.m.

ZendikariWol You shouldn't speak on other's behalf. I'd still run it with Vial Smasher to get Mardu colors because I probably won't be playing creatures. Why would I want to play a 3/3 doublestrike, Lifelink if I have no other bigger creatures to benefit from it? Maybe Piper is the single reason to finally make Mardu Spellslingers with Firesong and Sunspeaker You also don't have to play piper at all. The same goes for Bruse. It just depends on what you want to do. It does not matter if it's optimal.

I am just happy this card is in a common slot. Its value is so narrow and limited it is unlikely it will ever see any kind of constructed play. Just sad it will be in boosters when i open them.

I can still remember how sad I felt cracking a booster only to get Thoughtlace as my rare.

DeinoStinkus I never said that F&S was my commander.

griffstick MagicMarc The “Partner with” ability does actually allow you to use those two cards as partner commanders if (and only if) they are both legendary.

ZendikariWol says... #18

RomanNumeroDos you're correct, and I misspoke. What I meant was not "no one will play the piper" it is "there is no reason to do so," as basically any partner will add to your color identity and will be leaps and bounds more relevant than a 5-mana 3/3 dudebro with 0 abilities.

VampDemigod; that is why i pointed out nothing changed the legendary creature rule of commander which invalidates the cards in question from being partner commanders.

Yup I agree

So... for drafting, since the Piper is as freely available as basics, and there's no singleton restriction, are you allowed to use a deck consisting of 28 Wastes + 30 Pipers + 2 partner Pipers?

@cowardtoken if you manage to draft that deck, without telling anyone at the table you are, I will personally ask mtg Reddit to give you all their gold. (Not that they’ll listen to me, or that Reddit gold means anything on tappedout, but nonetheless....)

August 25, 2020 10:55 p.m.

I just want to get a good looking foil. Hopefully the cards aren't beat up when you open a pack.

Wastes is not in the set

September 1, 2020 2:15 p.m.

VampDemigod says... #26

Wastes is a basic land so you don’t have to draft it.

September 1, 2020 8:58 p.m.

VampDemigod says... #27

Also, the deck would total to 40 cards, not 60, so it’d be around 22 pipers, 2 partner pipers, and 16 wastes.

September 1, 2020 9 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #28

Commander draft decks are 60 card strong, not 40 as normal

September 2, 2020 1:10 a.m.

SynergyBuild says... #29

VampDemigod Actually, wastes while being a basic lands, similar to Snow Lands in Modern Horizons drafts, isn't a card that you can pick infinitely of, only the original Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest are required to be allowed to be given in any numbers to players. Also, yes 60 cards, not 40.

September 2, 2020 1:52 a.m.

MagicMarc says... #30

In limited events you can only pick wastes that you got as part of your card pool.

Anywhere else You can have as many Wastes as you want in a deck.

VampDemigod says... #31

Dang. That’ll be more of an achievement than I thought to draft mono-Prismatic Piper. Especially if you go for an all colorless manabase.

Just so everyone knows, my question has been answered. Sadly, T/O mobile (browser) won’t let me mark any of the answers as accepted.

If anyone who works on site design at T/O is reading this, can you put this on the to-do list? I don’t want to add more to your plate, but the lack of an “accept answer” button (or other method of accepting it) is causing me (and probably others) to clog the unanswered feed unintentionally.
