Abaques on What commanders do you want …

FormOverFunction Please build a Chandler and Joven partner deck! That would be awesome! In my head-canon those two cards now have Friends Forever with Chandler/Joven.

On the original topic, I'll say that I really don't want a lot of goodstuff or niche commanders anymore. I personally prefer to need to find more unique ways to make niche strategies such as Shrines work rather than just having Wizards print Go-Shintai of Life's Origin. What I personally like to see is commanders with interesting abilities that aren't pigeonholed into a single deck. The backgrounds and background commanders from Battler for Baldur's Gate are things I love because there are so many open-ended and interesting combinations from them.

I was just now logging in to this page to post almost exactly like this! I want them to re-visit the dynamic duo of Chandler and Joven. I love the idea of messing with other people’s artifacts.

FormOverFunction on The Great Planeswalker Debate

Attackable enchantments is definitely an interesting mechanic. It was super clunky, but I did like the “bolt your opponent and redirect it to their planeswalker” mechanic because it made them more like creatures (which they sort of are). Giving them protection from player-targeting damage spells made them, in my opinion, strangely resilient... which caused me logic-pain when they’re planeswalkers like your opponent. I understand the benefits of the change l, though; make the walkers more resilient and open up an additional range of walker-specific spells and effects for new card creation. To say something nice: they do a good job of adding, effectively, a sort of dummy-partner. Having a second player basically untap his or her one or two lands, and cast their 2/2 bear every turn... with the eventual late-game seven cmc bomb. To make sure I don’t say anything TOO nice (lol) I feel like adding a second opponent is a bad idea. It’s another in a long string of arms races; when walkers came into existence people (generally) needed to use them to keep up with opponents. Now that I think about it- walkers were also responsible for the change to the legend rule that I don’t like. It used to be that you would cast a walker SPECIFICALLY to get rid of your opponent’s walker... because everyone used Jayce. This “everyone gets to have everything” change further slid us out of the realm of imagination. If you summon the master-thief Joven to fight for you, I should be able to summon him out from under you if I have the spell. DAG-NABBIT THESE DURNED NEW-FANGLED RULES CHAP MY HIDE. I’m stopping before I start ranting about mana burn and sloppy more-mana-is-just-better-forever-no-matter-what play. I do like this thread, though! It’s good to talk about these existential aspects of the game!

I always wanted to see a mono red deck featuring the ol' Homelands duo Chandler and Joven. There's some meme decks around them but I think it would be a next-level challenge to not only make them playable but doing so while also actually utilizing and building around their abilities (aka not just Red good stuff, featuring Chandler and Joven). I've attempted it once but failed miserably, lol

RNR_Gaming when there was talk about a death-metal theme for Kaldheim I was pretty let down when Joven wasn’t given given the nod. On a broader note: I think a place like this provides a lot of value, in the (sometimes circular and already-been-said) discussions that magic players are drawn to. While I don’t read all of it, I feel like the act of arguing and debating those same cards over and over provide enjoyment and MAYBE even a little comfort... I think it’s worth keeping around... which is good because it’s probably not going anywhere anytime soon. ;p

FormOverFunction - I'm more so referring to the commanders that have hundreds/thousands of builds between edhrec and all the other deck building sites. Atraxa, Golos, Oloro, Kennrith, Najela ect. Like, a simple Google search or just reading the card almost builds the majority of those decks in most cases; I'd much rather discuss the off the wall underappreciated or underrepresented commanders :) Joven looks like a fat version of Natan Explosion and I cannot unseen it.

Lol @ 5. When I saw you mention “old commanders” and their power levels I thought you were going to start talking smack about my main man Joven . BRING ON THE BANDING ARGUMENTS!!!

I’m always a fan of using older/less-popular legends as commanders like: Lim-Dul the Necromancer , Joven , General Jarkeld , Cabal Patriarch , or even Questing Beast . They’re not always going to be as efficient or powerful, but they’ve got a lot of theme to work with and can catch people off guard (at a low investment cost). I’ve been deep down the theme hole, which is great if you enjoy it...but maybe just dip your toe in? Casual play is the best (probably only) place to try it...
