Phillygreenman007, the hydra comes out on cast, before zenith resolves, so it will get the -X counters aswell

Because the -1/-1 counters from Black Sun's Zenith permanently counteract some of the +1/+1 counters on the hydras, would it be better to use Toxic Deluge instead? I know that it doesn't create a hydra because it isn't an X spell, but it accomplishes the same thing while preserving the size of your own creatures.
For example, if I have three 6/6 hydras and I want to get rid of a indestructible 4/4 creature (my playgroup loves making indestructible Platinum Angels), I'd rather cast Toxic Deluge for 4 and have three 2/2 hydras temporarily that then become 6/6 again instead of casting Black Sun's Zenith for 4 and having four 2/2 hydras that stay that way. Also worthy to note that both of these spells kill Zaxara, the Exemplary so leaving your board crippled without your commander can be dangerous.

I wonder if Entreat the Dead would be a nice addition to this deck. It maintains the X factor the deck is built upon and returns creatures from the graveyard. So should Black Sun's Zenith be used as a board wipe, you can recover.

Mudbutt, similarly to the Green Sun's Zenith conversation in the archives, since most of the creatures are X costed and are at base 0/0, they would die as they enter the battlefield from Entreat the Dead. Also, most of the creatures that will be dying anyways are the hydra tokens created by Zaxara, the Exemplary which cannot be brought back from the graveyard. Tokens cease to exist as soon as they hit the graveyard. This was a good idea, but probably not the best.

Xephon_ Ah yea I guess that would not be too helpful then as there is only 7 cards that could come back into play. Should resurrection be needed I think Finale of Eternity would work a little better as it can also be used to destroy three creatures. Your point is very valid.

Phillygreenman007, Millenhero & Xephon_, thanks for pointing that out. Black Sun's Zenith hasn't seen play in this deck yet but I agree with the points here, Toxic Deluge definitely feels like the better board wipe option for the reason you mentioned Xephon_. It does indeed take Zaxara out so it's more of a defcon 1 emergency measure if needed, but I like the idea of having more control over what gets removed with Toxic Deluge, smart.

Yeah, recursion is a challenge in this deck due to the cost creatures. Profane Command & Volrath's Stronghold certainly help, but I'm wondering if a good 'ol Eternal Witness warrants a home in here (like she does in any green deck really). Mudbutt, I am drawn to the removal option of Finale of Eternity and am definitely considering.

How does Profane Command work with X costed Hydra spells? Do they die on etb?
April 15, 2020 11:49 a.m.
Yeah WarSpaniel, they would ETB as a 0/0 and would fizzle. I would only choose that option on Profane Command for some clutch sneaky tech like a surprise Deepglow Skate recursion, but typically the other 3 options are preferable here.

Forkbeard now the question i'm wondering about doubling season, do the +1/+1 counters double as well?

What about Villainous Wealth. It could be a great card to pair with this commander
April 19, 2020 10:10 a.m.
Agreed Fearsnuttin, Villainous Wealth is already in here under the 'Overwhelming Advantage' section.

Is Shark Typhoon too much for this deck? It kind of doubles up on Zaxara's ability, excepting they aren't hydras.

PolarBearSoup the fact that it only gives you one, and has such a high cmc, makes it a no go on my list.

The fact that there's now a sharknado MTG card does indeed make the heart glad, but yeah. Just not the right fit here.

Forkbeard I could see it replacing Talrand, Sky Summoner in a lot of decks.

Forkbeard, have you thought of Helix Pinnacle as a wincon? it similar to Simic Ascendancy

also if you could give me any recommendations on my deck that would be awesome, trying to keep it below $800 though for now Zaxara, Nightmare Hydra
April 27, 2020 8:34 a.m.
Hey Hoobynobber7395! Yeah, I've thought about adding Helix Pinnacle as an additional win condition. Might be a nice 'deal with this or else' card to throw in the mix and I actually have a copy just sitting in a binder. I'll see if I can put it to use and squeeze it in here, but cuts are getting tough.
I'll take a peek at your deck now, cheers!

I didn't check the card but I know at least with the what about Yarok, the Desecrated how well would that synergize with this
April 30, 2020 2:58 p.m.
Hi sam171z - I absolutely love Yarok, amazing card but not the right fit in here. Sort of on theme in that the hydras would benefit from the the double ETB triggers, but also a bit unnecessary and win-more. Would feel like a clunky good stuff card card in this build, y'know?

I like the deck. You may want to consider swapping one of your ramp options for Pir's whim or Tempt with Discovery to more readily hit the Coffrs/Yawgmoth combo in case expedition map isn't enough.
