Thurday Night Modern - 8/22/2019 —Aug. 22, 2019
Didn't realize it's been over a month now since I have been able to play. Only 11 folks showed tonight, but I came away with my first 4-0 ever.
Round One: 2-0 vs Dredge (Gaak-less)
W G1: I won the roll and played t1 Birds of Paradise. He had a Simian Spirit Guide for t1 Wrenn and Six to ping my Birds. But then he only durdled with lands till he died.
W G2: I had a t1 Surgical Extraction for his Prized Amalgam that he Faithlessly looted away, which really hurt his offense generation. He couldn't generate many creatures on the board and he eventually lost.
Sb: 2 Surgical Extraction, Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
Round Two 2-1 vs Boros Burn
W G1: I outlasted his burn and he ran out of gas.
L G2: He got lots of creatures down and overran me quick.
W G3: Similar to G1, and I used a Garruk Wildspeaker ult to close the game.
Sb: Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, Walking Ballista, 2 Pyroclasm
Round Three 2-1 vs Humans
W G1: Landed Hornet Queen to stabilize the board and she carried me to victory.
L G2: He flooded the board and got enough creatures to swing through Hornet Queen blockers.
W G3: I landed t2 Blood Moon which shut his game down entirely.
Sb: 3 Blood Moon, Walking Ballista
Round Four 2-1 vs Bant Coco Elementals
L G1: Swung with an 18/1 tramply Eternal Witness, but lost on the backswing. Definitely a misplay on my part.
WW G2 and G3: Both Hornet Queen wins, which held off his elemental army until I could Garruk Wildspeaker ult.
Sb: 3 Blood Moon, 2 Pyroclasm, Walking Ballista
Some random notes and thoughts: I didn't see a single Craterhoof Behemoth all night. I cast a few Primeval Titan but never got to attack with one. Noted the deck can't easily deal with fliers like Mantis Rider. I felt like the balance of accelerators vs threats was very good. I usually sideboarded 4-6 cards, which felt like a good number. Overall my games felt like I always had a way to shore up my boardstate or fight back from behind. I lucked out not facing control tonight, as it's usually prevalent at my LGS.
