Hopefully Improving —March 6, 2012

I had some experiences at a recent FNM that showed me the weaknesses I have against UB Zombies and Birthing Pod. I've changed up the sideboard a bit and also replaced Incinerate with Volt Charge. I'm looking forward to the next chance I get to play.

I understand what you're suggesting, with the way Chandra, the FirebrandMTG Card: Chandra, the Firebrand can double-size my wraths, but that's rarely necessary. She was a consideration when building the deck, but it didn't take very long to decide to cut her. However, maybe she can be the sideboard card against Wolf Run Ramp. I'll think about it.

It's nice to have options just in case you run across a unusual deck type, mainly just so you're not caught off guard, plus she is great at doubling a Devil's PlayMTG Card: Devil's Play for the win.

And because of the need for that flexibility, I'm becoming more convinced she should take the place of ManabarbsMTG Card: Manabarbs in my sideboard. Thanks for the hot tip.

By the way, Koth of the HammerMTG Card: Koth of the Hammer is already pretty good at doubling Devil's PlayMTG Card: Devil's Play, as you can see from a few of my game descriptions in the update. ;)

I think that is a excellent idea. Besides you don't have any Goblin FireslingerMTG Card: Goblin Fireslingers or Evolving WildsMTG Card: Evolving Wilds to feed to a Grim LavamancerMTG Card: Grim Lavamancer to put out before dropping ManabarbsMTG Card: Manabarbs.

I could see how this deck would wreck the token/delver decks but have a hard time versus the titan strategies.

I'm trying to think of an answer, but once Primeval TitanMTG Card: Primeval Titan resolves its pretty much gg.

i suppose casting DismemberMTG Card: Dismember then a red wrath would work? but hurt you ofc

Yeah, the best I can usually do is attack into the titan with an animated MountainMTG Card: Mountain while I'm holding burn and hope the opponent finds that kind of 2-for-1 trade acceptable. Unfortunately, if he does buy into the trade, that means he's probably holding something else I'm going to die to. I'm hoping that including Chandra will help, since she can be used to double-size my SlagstormMTG Card: Slagstorms and IncinerateMTG Card: Incinerates (or, if she's high enough on loyalty, kill the titan outright).

sounds like with her you will have the most chance you can have! keep a playset of DismemberMTG Card: Dismember handy in case :-P

I did some thinking after getting some other advice, and I think I'd rather have Act of AggressionMTG Card: Act of Aggression for anti-titan measures. The massive life swing should be enough to bring my opponent into burnable range to end the game. It's something that worked out very well for me while playing a Red deck in a big Standard event right before the release of Innistrad.

I very much enjoy the inclusion of Kessig Wolf Run here. Nobody who played Standard when Worldwake was legal would've thought you could get a Manland to be that huge. Nice.

Act of TreasonMTG Card: Act of Treason is cheaper. So is Traitorous BloodMTG Card: Traitorous Blood.

Neither of those is an instant, however. I like the flexibility, especially since Act of AggressionMTG Card: Act of Aggression can be just as cheap if necessary.

what about volt charge, it seems like you run alot of counters and volt charging after koth is just evil

Kuldotha PhoenixMTG Card: Kuldotha Phoenix seems like a good card for this deck, you got enough artifacts to be able to keep recurring him.

Thank you so much, everyone, for the comments.

@Iceterra123: The short answer is that Arc TrailMTG Card: Arc Trail isn't an instant, and that for 2 mana I like the fact that IncinerateMTG Card: Incinerate deals 3 damage to one thing. However, if I didn't feel WhipflareMTG Card: Whipflare was so important right now, I would be playing Arc Trail instead.

@Johnnyt: I considered Volt ChargeMTG Card: Volt Charge for a short period of time when first building the deck, but costing 3 and having the proliferate be just "good" instead of "great" put me off. However, I'm thinking of implementing Karn LiberatedMTG Card: Karn Liberated into an update, so having another planeswalker in the deck is making me consider Volt Charge again.

@Bun: That's an interesting thought, but the upkeep restriction for the activation bothers me. I am thinking of changing my creature base though, hopefully finding some way to add Urabrask the Hidden MTG Card: Urabrask the Hidden .
