Tier 1/2/3/4 updates and comments —Aug. 8, 2016

Sorry for the late update!

Did some quick changes according to what was reflected in the discussion. Moved Yosei, the Morning Star, Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer, Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant  Flip, Ojutai, Soul of Winter, Lu Xun, Scholar General down to tier 4. Moved Mayael the Anima up to tier 3, General Tazri up to tier 2, and Arcum Dagsson down to 2.

I remember seing a General Tazri list but I can't seem to find it... Anyone?

Also, I remember some discussion about Dralnu, Lich Lord. If there is no further opinon on him, I think it is now possible to move him up tier 3.

Thanks people for being so awesome and contributing to this list!

Minor tweaks again!

  • I'll rewrite the tier 2 description. At the time of the description's writing, tier 2 was in turmoil, people recommending x general being demoted and y general being promoted left and right. Now that things have settled down a bit, I'll look at the generals and do a write up.

  • AzamiLadyofScrolls: Couldn't help but notice that in one post you say "Clearly you misunderstand most of my meta" and "I play against a lot of green and red players at my LGS and getting rocks out is important," then turn around and say that your deck isn't tailored to your meta. Since you have a few changes in your deck that fight your meta's threats, it's just not the type of deck that this list needs. Not everyone has your meta, and people coming to the tierlist won't want to see a deck that runs a few things specifically to your meta. This is supposed to be a general list, and if a newer player enters and sees, "Ooh! Star Compass!" they might think that most Azami lists should run it (as they are led to believe by the description), which is untrue. (This is not a criticism of your deck choices, it's just a re-clarification of this list's philosophy.) Additionally, most decks built on a budget aren't as competitive as their unlimited counterparts, which is why I haven't suggested my personal Yisan list.

  • ShaperSavant made this Oona list as a black-splashing version of High Tide. Pretty cool, but probably not the one we're looking for. Just a deck to note.

  • If I forgot to state it, my opinion is that Azami and Damia should both be moved to tier 2.

I'll comment later with an updated tier 2 description.

@ PurphorosGodoftheForge - We have two other forums where you should be asking that instead of here.

Modern Forum

Modern Deck Help Forum

Also we have a very long Modern discussion thread that may be suitable for this type of question here.

You could also use the official card database here. In the filters for the advanced search you want to use these settings:

Format - Modern
Text - "when Enters Untap"
Type (NOT) = "Creature" "Planeswalker" and probably "Sorcery"
CMC <= 2

What you are looking for doesn't exist in modern as a 2 drop. You want either Intruder Alarm or Freed from the Real. The first works of ETB the second works off of tap/untap and mana generation.

Late again (as always... sorry for this guyz), but on the Azami and Damia cases, I already moved them down tier 2 because I think that is their place. They are both really great (as many other generals in tier 2) and are in the top of tier 2, though.

Also, we have no decklist for Edric... Would this one work?

Hey guys, so i'm looking to build a new deck. My current generals are Teferi, Temporal Archmage, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Saffi Eriksdotter, and Azusa, Lost but Seeking.

However, as you can see from my decks, i'm missing black. And that's a problem, as I love playing black in EDH. Anyway, I recently traded for a Kresh, the Bloodbraided as I had heard he was halfway decent and a fun deck to play (and I was looking to build a strong casual deck)... but I just haven't been able to build a list i'm happy with. So i've decided to scrap him and build something else. I'm currently looking at Prossh, Skyraider of Kher, Maelstrom Wanderer or The Mimeoplasm.

Are there any good primers/lists that you guys know of that I could do some research on? I've only played against Prossh like twice, I'm fairly sure I can build a halfway decent Maelstrom Wanderer list on my own (but it would require me to disassemble some of my other decks which wouldn't be ideal), and i've never even seen a Mimeoplasm deck in action. Would really appreciate some feedback/advice on the pros/cons of these generals.

Edit: Oh, and I am looking for competitive lists. I can downgrade them as I see fit to fit my playgroup, but i'd like to start from the top. If there are any decks that just like, define a general at it's best, i'd love to look at them.

kyuuri117, if you really want a fun casual commander for a play group, I highly recommend Tasigur, the Golden Fang. He has good color combinations, nice and versatile, and is really political. With some selective exile cards and an ally, he can be a blast to play.

kyuuri117 says... #8

Wee_Dragonaut The issue with Tasigur is that if I play him, my friends are going to assume i've built a broken combo deck, regardless of how i've actually built the deck... so I might as well play him as a broken combo deck.

kyuuri117 With a spread like that I think it would be best to narrow down what type of deck you want to play.

Personally I LOVE the way Sidisi plays but I wonder if that's the novelty of it being my newest deck.

B has plenty of options, stax builds, token builds, combo, control, etc.

@kyuuri117: Most of the Tier 1 and 2 commanders have optimized decklists. Scroll up to the description and click the "Tier 1 Lists" dropdown to find Prossh and Mimeoplasm.

Speaking of decklists, it looks like Shaper has an optimized Riku storm deck, and we're still in need of a Riku deck. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/riku-of-infinite-reflections-06-03-14-1/

Looks like Shattergang, Marath, and Oona were never added.

Finally, I found a much better Grenzo build. It's actually optimized for multiplayer matches, vs the current French build. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/grenzos-doomsday-plans/

I have a question. on most of the teir 1 decklists I have seen that you use 32 lands. Why that number? I was just wondering cause I am a little afraid to go that low.

June 15, 2016 3:22 p.m.

NarejED says... #14

32 is just about the lowest you can still safely go in EDH without having to mulligan at least once on average. Some decks that run an extremely high density of ramp and/or have an especially low curve (Derevi, Zur, Meren) can go a bit lower-- usually to 30. 32 is a nice starting number though.

It's more important to look at all your mana sources rather than just your land count. For example, Brago only runs 30 lands. However, he runs an additional 17 cards with CMC 2 or less that tap for mana or tutor to find other sources, bringing his total to 47.

What's this? An optimized 5C Scion list at long last? (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/scion-druid-win/)[http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/scion-druid-win/]

Are you guys only ever going to have tier one and two lists?

June 17, 2016 2:23 a.m.

NarejED says... #19

Probably. The majority of Tier 3 commanders get a lot less attention, particularly by competitive players who would potentially be building optimized decklists. The amount of work required to create a decent compendium of Tier 3 decks simply isn't worth the payoff.

why's Odric, Master Tactician only tier 4?

MagicalHacker says... #21

If you're looking for lists for any commander, use edhrec.com to at least get a place to start.

June 17, 2016 5:19 p.m.

Leinahtan says... #22

Trtl: He's a mono-white commander who has no good abilities outside of combat. Combat-based generals are usually bad, and add that to the worst color identity in the game, makes him a pretty bad commander.

MagicalHacker: EDHrec isn't great for finding lists. For example, if I look up Brago, I'll find nice stuff like Reflector Mage and Strionic Resonator, but then I'll also find stuff like Venser, Simulacrum, Whirler Rogue, and Geist-Honored Monk. It would be better to look at a list, which at least is somewhat refined and has competitive cards.

MagicalHacker says... #23

I thought we were talking about getting lists not on the sample decklist part of the description...

June 17, 2016 11:14 p.m.

mtgThaen says... #24

Edhrec is a good place to start, but it's not the end-all be-all of lists, at least not competetive ones. But If you want to find commonly played cards, it's a good place to look. A bit of research, common knowledge, and conversation will tell you that certain inclusions should Be actually exclusions.
