Adding more potent spells —Aug. 15, 2019

After testing a little bit, I took out one Fatal Push and my one-of Slaughter Pact in favor of two Flame Slash , and I also took the two Shadowfeed out of the 75 altogether in favor of playing Collective Brutality . I may also find room for an additional Collective Brutality in the mainboard.

I added flame slash because I found that the deck still has a problem with removing big creatures. A creature four or more toughness is actually very hard to deal with, and if that creature also has a high converted mana cost, there is almost nothing that the deck can do. Additionally, with Dreadhorde Arcanist , casting and then immediately flashing Flame Slash back increases the range of damage the deck can do to a creature with one spell from six, with Lightning Bolt , to eight. This gives the deck more of a fighting chance against a Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis , which the deck could deal with previously, but only as long as Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis did not enter the battlefield before being in the graveyard for it can be hit with Surgical Extraction .

I added Collective Brutality for the sole purpose of combating burn. Once testing against burn, I found that Shadowfeed did little to nothing against it. While I found the card to actually be very useful in graveyard matchups, the main purpose of the card was to deal with burn, so I cut and looked for a better card. Rakdos does not really have much in the way of lifegain, and most burn hate that could be feasibly played would be artifacts such as Dragon's Claw and Sun Droplet . I think I would run dragons claw since it can allow the deck to gain more life than it loses, especially with Dreadhorde Arcanist allowing for you to cast red cards twice, but burn has a lot of ways to deal with artifacts, and I feel that a Dragon's Claw would quickly get destroyed by a Smash to Smithereens or Destructive Revelry . Though I can see reason to run Dragon's Claw or another artifact to deal with burn, I opted to play Collective Brutality because it allows me to discard two additional cards and use all of its modes to disable burn more efficiently. Additionally, while dragons claw is only really good against burn, Collective Brutality can be used against Storm decks, and also helps to solve wrong half problems that interactive midrange decks often face.

Honestly looks pretty clean overall. I would say that Grim Lavamancer and Sword of Light and Shadow are more sideboard cards depending on the matchup. I would switch the sword out with Sword of Fire and Ice to get some extra damage and card advantage. With the amount of spells you can sling I honestly wouldn't think it bad if you put in the Young Pyromancer you were thinking about.

Hey, thanks for the input! I'm seeing a lot of similar decks to the one I made popping up. I ended up cutting a Grim Lavamancer in favor of trying out the fourth Seasoned Pyromancer . It has really just been that good. As for the Sword of Light and Shadow , I have never been disappointed to draw it. I think that it has a particularly good spot in this deck over Sword of Fire and Ice because it solves problems that the deck has with its life total, which is a pretty big problem since this deck doesn't have any collective brutality or cards like scavenging ooze to deal with aggressive decks like burn, and also with this deck having such a low number of threats, getting back a creature is amazing. It lets you get a restock almost guaranteed after hitting with a manaland thanks to the creature recursion built into it. Both Sword of Light and Shadow and Sword of Fire and Ice do this, but usually all of this deck needs is one creature to pull ahead. Also Sword of Light and Shadow blocks Path to Exile and Fatal Push and for some creatures even Lightning Bolt , while Sword of Fire and Ice only blocks bolt. This helps to keep you ahead.

I would agree though that Sword of Fire and Ice may be better, since it just says draw a card instead of there needing to be a creature in the graveyard, and that it can two for one having the shock. I will test with it.

As for Young Pyromancer , after testing, I find that it just doesn't provide enough advantage given this build, and it really is just a win more card because it would only stick once I get enough value creatures out to be able to cast enough spells for Young Pyromancer to pay off.

Shadowfeed is interesting, but I'd look at Rakdos Charm - it offers hate for graveyards, artifacts and the kind of 'go wide' strategies that kill 1-for-1 removal- its another option if the three life isn't essential for a massive number of burn matchups. Its less powerful than more specific answers, but its versatility does free up sideboard slots.

I'd feel more comfortable with more unearth targets too- with the amount of life loss the deck has going on, i'd be considering death's shadow or Stillmoon Cavalier. That said, I would be taking this deck in a more aggressive direction and running Wizard's Lightning , because I feel the need to race the amount of combo in my current meta.

Thanks for the comment lagotripha. Rakdos Charm is a card I looked at, but decided against it. It is a good card, and can be played easily since it has some really good utility. I looked at Death's Shadow , but don't really want to end up trying to lose life to play it as a threat. As for Stillmoon Cavalier , I dont see it worth playing another 3 drop without it gaining me life or just like winning the game or something. I played Wizard's Lightning in a previous version of the deck that I actually have linked in the description. The problems with the card that I have had is that it is 3 mana, which hurts a lot with Dark Confidant , and you cant flash it back very easily with Dreadhorde Arcanist . Finally, I think Shadowfeed has a spot in this deck unless I find a better replacement. It gains life, which is pretty hard to find in black actually, and with a 1 mana cvc, I can flash it back with Dreadhorde Arcanist . Additionally it can be just a little bit more hate for the graveyard, being able to take out that one Vengevine or that one Arclight Phoenix . Shadowfeed has been really good which is funny. I guess that Healing Salve is good when its in black. Thanks for the comment and suggestions.
