FIRST UPDATE FOR 2025! —Feb. 17, 2025

*RETROSPECT:

So 2024 was not the year of the Squirrel. With a total of 6 losses and no wins, I am not too thrilled by it. The deck is fun, and has fun moments, but it never seems to get going. Maybe it's the lack of lands, maybe it was all the tap lands, or maybe it is the lack of card draw/protection. I do not know. But this is the first update to the deck in 2025. Sorry it took so long, been busy with work and my children. My youngest starts school this year and currently trying to figure out what to do about the 13 year old that I just recently found out was mine. Been a crazy 2024 folks!

*UPGRADES:

I took out Primal Vigor and Warstorm Surge as both were high costing and rarely got used. I added a Forest and Mountain to the deck.

Took Farseek out for Thornvault Forager because I wanted another squirrel and Farseek doesn't find a Forest, only a mountain and as it stands I only have a few I can search for and it is required to enter tapped. So pretty slow. Also Thornvault lets me tutor other squirrels.

Took out Liege of the Hollows as it helps everyone, not just me (and I don't remember ever playing it) for a Rootcast Apprenticeship.

Took out Coat of Arms for a Squirrel Sovereign as Coat helps everyone and for five mana, I don't remember ever playing it.

It was hard for me to take out Druid's Call, but I swapped it out for Honored Dreyleader.

Took out Highland Forest for a Mountain, Rock Tar Pit for a Forest, and Grasslands for a Oak hollow Village.

Took out Ranger's Path because the lands it fetches come in tapped, and swapped it for Patchwork Banner since it gives a boost to my squirrels and taps for any color.

Took out Pirate's Pillage because I discovered discarding cards, even for two cards and two treasures slows me down actually, and forces me to get rid of my resources. Added Idol of Oblivion

Took out my shinny Squirrel Sanctuary for Scurry of Squirrels. Sanctuary was just too slow and required a nontoken creature I controlled to die. Which doesn't happen often.

Swapped some cards for artwork; Squirrel Mob, Swarmyard, Second Harvest, and Beastmaster Ascension. Working on getting all Bloomburrow fall art lands, as fall is my favorite season.

*FUTURE PLANS:

I want to get rid of the other tap lands for lands that either don't enter tapped or can enter untapped; Thornspire Verge, Karplusan Forest, Cragcrown Pathway  Flip, and Spire Garden to name a few. coughwin lotto get Taigacough

Like I said, I want to also get all the Bloomburrow fall art for the deck to make it look pretty. I am looking at taking out my other two discard draw spells, for more continuous draw spells like Fountainport, Pawpatch Formation, Seize the Spotlight... can't seem to find anything else.

IF this deck can win 7 games, I will start foiling the deck out this year. But I don't get to play often, so when I do, I try to play Gishath. :/ So We shall see.

*BRACKET SYSTEM:

I really don't understand the whole 'bracket' system yet. It seems pretty interesting, but I think we should only have four instead of five; fun/goofy decks (1), precons (2), upgraded/optimized (3), cEDH (4). 1's are your chair tribal decks or artwork decks. 2's are the precons and precons only. 3's are precons that have been upgraded or decks that have been built and tested. Then 4's are your competitive; must win fast decks. As it stands I don't think this deck is above a 3 on their current standard. I run a total of ONE tutor now, and it's only for squirrels. Yes I run TWO infinite combos but they require three cards to win, two to go infinite; so not very fast and it gets interrupted pretty easily since I have ZERO ways to protect them. Lastly, my mana base is currently in need of fixing. Right now it's all over the place. I thought I was onto something with adding Forest/Mountain type lands, but that seems like it was wrong and slowed me down.

Let me know in the comments below if you want me to add this explanation of my deck's 'bracket' in the description of the deck.

Some food for thought. To start with, 32 lands is a little on the low side. If they end up spaced out in your library evenly, you'll be drawing a land, at best, once every three turns. Sure, you have a lot of ramp, but your total land count is low enough that you're going to be using more of your ramp to keep up with your one-land-per-turn instead of actually ramping ahead of your opponents. On top of that, I notice that 8 of your current 32 lands (a full 25%) come into play tapped with no condition to allow otherwise. I would strongly recommend swapping in a few more lands, and see what you could possibly do to replace some of those tap lands with something you can use the same turn they come into play.
