Wretched Camel

Creature — Zombie Camel

When Wretched Camel dies, if you control a Desert or there is a Desert card in your graveyard, target player discards a card.

Thanks for the feedback! I've made a few chances since I posted it. Non-legal cards removed mostly.

  1. Wretched Camel isn't a must. More of a filler. My collection isn't great so I don't have much choice.

  2. I only have 1 Lord of the Accursed currently so i'll look into getting more.

  3. Lurching Rotbeast is again another filler unfortunately.

  4. The only person I play against at the moment is my girlfriend and she likes to use Waterknot which is why that was included. (I probably should have stuck it in the description).

  5. I'll look into getting more of them as well.

  6. Already removed due to legallity. I only included them to fill space.

Thanks for the feedback you've given me. I'm a new player so i've a lot to learn!

Would you mind telling me what a sideboard is please?

I have a few suggestions that may help improve your deck:

1) If you want to play Wretched Camel I would suggest running a few Deserts just so that the card has some value.

2) Lord of the Accursed is a great card for this deck, so I would recommend running all four copies so that there's a better chance of it turning up.

3) Lurching Rotbeast is not that great. Even though it has cycling, it's four mana for a 4/2. There are better zombies with more value out there.

4) Demystify is probably better as a sideboard card. (If you plan on playing competitively) It's not guaranteed that your opponent will be playing enchantments.

5) In Oketra's Name is another great card, but you should definitely run more copies so that there's a better chance it will be drawn.

6) Deathgaze Cockatrice and Typhoid Rats are a) not zombies and b) not standard legal so I don't recommend running them.

Hope this helps!

I have been wondering about changing the removal package to something like, Fungal Infection and Vicious Offering, instead of Fatal Push and Cast Down, since Vicious Offering can kill about almost anything we want to kill, even Hazoret the Fervent, while adding some more creatures that can be sac to the offering kicker cost, i'm not quite sure which would be better, i thought about this 3, Doomed Dissenter, Wretched Camel and dire fleet hoarder , what do you think about this???

Also, have you tried the new land Cabal Stronghold? What do you think is better, the deserts package or this one?

Since you have a control approach, I think the raid on ixalan cards are negligible. The cycle of Unburden is better than the raid on Heartless Pillage, since on late game your opponent will have no cards is hand, and an extra draw from a dead card can't hurt. I have a similar deck, running 4 Ammit Eternal, it's a 5/5 body with 3 Mana, and Afflict 3. Can be used with Yahenni's Expertise, normally having more impact on board than a 1/2 dreamstealer. Run only 2. The deserts, Ifnir Deadlands, Dunes of the Dead, and Scavenger Grounds can help with removal/make chump block. Since using deserts, a good drop 2 is Wretched Camel, adding to the choices to when lost 2 life, kill and discard, etc. Raiders' Wake is a very bad drop 4, since with early Duress and Harsh scrutiny, your opponent will have nothing to discard. Stick on 4 Torment of Scarabs and none Raiders'wake.

I'm testing a similar deck, but I've added 4 Ammit Eternal, and using only 2 dreamstealer. Dreamstealer is a solid card, but Kitesail Freebooter and Wretched Camel can make your opponent discard the entire hand, making the dreamstealer a weak creature when he ETB. Since he can eternalize, the opponent will not kill him

You're living in a comfy meta if you can play Dreamstealer reliably without access to Green/Red pump spells.

Your deck will suffer to any form of aggro, even if that aggro is just a 2-drop followed by a 3-drop and nothing else for the remainder of the game. 5 damage on board represents a 4 turn clock, without any mainboard removal.

Fell Flagship seems really really bad when you only have 1 creature who can crew it alone. And crewing it means you can't hit your opponent in the air for 5 damage. Your only other option to crew would be to draw, cast, and tap all 3 Dreamstealer.

If you're intent on pushing hand control, I recommend Miasmic Mummy, Kitesail Freebooter, and Wretched Camel. Regardless, your deck would need heavy revisions for a normal, healthy LGS meta.

I used to play a hand control heavy mono black aggro deck. I would highly highly recommend Miasmic Mummy and Wretched Camel. They slow chip away at your opponent's hand while providing some early aggro or blockers. Its extremely easy to work in cheap deserts in a mono-black deck. Kitesail Freebooter is absolutely excellent as it may steal a card immediately and then eats a removal spell if they want it back. You'll want 4 Kitesails. 4 Deadeye Tracker would only make it into your sideboard to fend off graveyard strategies. Run a full playset of the Gifted Aetherborn hands down. I'd also run Sword-Point Diplomacy over Painful Lesson any day.

Dreamstealer is simply not good enough without access to Red or Green pump spells so I'd cut him. The Ammit Eternal, Fathom Fleet Captain, & Alley Strangler have no synergy with you deck's primary win condition.

Nightmare, Ruin Rat, and Contract Killing are horrible horrible cards in Standard right now. I'd just run 4 copies of Walk the Plank and 2 Vraska's Contempts as your non Doomfall kill spells. If you're on a budget, the Contempts may set you back a bit as they were $8 a pop not too long ago. Contempt removes signature competitive threats like Chandra, Scarab God, & Glorybringer at Instant speed. I've yet to see Trial of Ambition + Cartoush synergy work, but the card advantage it could generate is ridiculous.

Thank you for your comment Legendary_penguin_of_death

I saw your deck and get why the deserts work well there! I was thinking about adding Wretched Camel as well, but I find it a bit slow for it to work, as my creatures are mostly there for me to win time and cast my annoying enchantments and torments MUAHAHAHA. I preffer to focus on surviving till turn 4 with my opponent with few or none cards in hand nor creatures in the battlefield. Then the fun begins >:)

I'll be reporting how it works out as soon as I have the deck done hahaha
