Comments from Grim in bold.

Game 1

Tappedout wins the toss and plays first. T keeps an opening hand of Simic Guildgate, Forest, Cloudfin Raptor, Gridlock, Prophetic Prism, Drakewing Krasis, Shambleshark

Grim keeps a hand of 2x Plains, Murder Investigation, Daring Skyjek, Executioner's Swing, Millennial Gargoyle, Alms Beast.

Turn 1

T plays Simic Guildgate and passes.

There had to be SOMEONE doing that.

G draws Zarichi Tiger, plays Plains, and passes.

Turn 2

T draws Hands of Binding, plays Forest, casts Cloudfin Raptor, and passes.

G draws Aerial Maneuver, plays Plains, casts Daring Skyjek, and passes.

Turn 3

T draws Forest and plays it. He attacks with Cloudfin Raptor; G does not block. The Raptor hits for no damage. T passes.

Obvious Shambleshark is obvious.

G draws Smite. She does nothing and passes. End step, T flashes down Shambleshark, evolving Cloudfin Raptor to 1/2.

Turn 4

T draws Rust Scarab. He casts Drakewing Krasis, evolving Raptor to 2/3 and Shark to 3/2. He attacks with the Raptor alone. G casts Aerial Maneuver on Daring Skyjek then blocks Raptor with it. Raptor dies. T passes.

G draws Swamp and plays it. She passes.

Turn 5

T draws Simic Charm. He casts Hands of Binding targeting Daring Skyjek, then ciphers it onto Drakewing Krasis. He attacks with all his creatures and hits. (T 20, G 14). He passes. End step, G casts Executioner's Swing on the Krasis, killing it.

G draws Plains and plays it. She casts Alms Beast and passes.

Turn 6

T draws Forest and plays it. He casts Prophetic Prism drawing Island. He attacks with Shambleshark and G blocks with Alms Beast. T pumps Shambleshark with Simic Charm in response, ending in the death of the Beast and the Shark. (T 26, G 14). T passes.

G draws Plains and plays it. She casts Zarichi Tiger, then attacks with Skyjek and hits. (T 23, G 14).

Not going well. At least I have some time.

Turn 7

T draws Simic Charm and plays Island. He casts Rust Scarab and passes.

G draws Swamp and plays it. She passes.

Everything I could cast would be destroyed by a Rust Scarab attack.

Turn 8

T draws Metropolis Sprite. He attacks with Rust Scarab. G blocks with Daring Skyjek and then casts Smite on Rust Scarab. C responds with Simic Charm to give it hexproof, and the Scarab kills the Skyjek. T casts Metropolis Sprite and passes. End step, G activates the Tiger. (T 23, G 16).

That is a LOT of removal. Still, getting back into the game now.

Agh, another one. Was really counting on killing that creature to be able to cast everything else. The Tiger will give me a few extra draws.

G draws Zarichi Tiger and casts it. She passes.

Turn 9

T draws Plains. He attacks with Rust Scarab and Metropolis Sprite. G blocks Scarab with the new Zarichi Tiger and Daring Skyjek. T pumps the Sprite, which hits. Scarab, Tiger, and Skyjek all die. (T 23, G 14).

I did not expect that. Thought she would either think I had a trick or not want to lose two creatures. Perhaps she has artifacts or enchantments.

T passes. End step, G activates the Tiger. (T 23, G 16).

Turn 10

G draws Syndicate Enforcer. She casts it and attacks with Zarichi Tiger. (T 21, G 16).

Maybe she has another Aerial Maneuver.

T draws Rapid Hybridization.

I have to keep attacking here, tricks of hers or no.

T attacks with Metropolis Sprite and pumps it. It hits. (T 21, G 14). T passes.

Turn 11

G draws Swamp and plays it. She casts Millennial Gargoyle with extort (T 20, G 15), then puts Murder Investigation on the Gargoyle. She attacks with Enforcer and Tiger. (G 15, T 15). She passes.

And that would be why she wanted to kill Rust Scarab so badly.

I've got the momentum, but he has three cards in hand.

T draws Frontline Medic. He casts it and passes.

It was either cast it, or do nothing, wait for her to attack, and commence Frog Lizard shenanigans on my own sprite. Still, I don't like the Millennial Gargoyle having no opposing fliers, even if it DOES create 1/1s to block it.

Turn 12

G draws Kingpin's Pet. She casts it with extort. (G 16, T 14). She attacks with Syndicate Enforcer and Millennial Gargoyle. C blocks the Enforcer with the Medic; they die, Gargoyle hits. (G 16, T 12). G passes.

Where's that Nimbus Swimmer?

C draws Island. He does nothing and passes. End step, G uses the Tiger. (G 18, T 12).

Turn 13

G draws Swamp. As she enters combat, C casts Gridlock on all her creatures; in response she activates the Tiger. (G 20, T 12). G passes.

T draws Island. He does nothing and passes.

Giving you as much time as possible here, deck, but you need to give me something pretty soon here. A Shambleshark or an Ivy Lane Denizen would even be nice.

Turn 14

G draws Swamp. She attacks with all her creatures. T doesn't block. (G 20, T 3). G passes.

T draws Island and concedes.

Sideboarding

G boards in Contaminated Ground and boards out Shadow Slice.

T boards in Angelic Skirmisher and Realmwright, and boards out Metropolis Sprite and 1x Shambleshark.

Game 2

T plays first and keeps an opening hand of Island, Plains, Gyre Sage, Rust Scarab, Shambleshark, Realmwright, Drakewing Krasis.

Not exactly why I put Realmwright in there, but this is a good reason too.

G keeps an opening hand of 2x Plains, Swamp, Smite, Syndicate Enforcer, Daring Skyjek, Kingpin's Pet.

Turn 1

T plays Island for Realmwright naming Forest and passes.

G draws Slate Street Ruffian, plays Swamp, and passes.

Turn 2

T draws Forest.

Oh, of course

T plays Plains. He attacks with Realmwright and hits. (T 20, G 19). He casts Gyre Sage and passes.

G draws Plains, plays it, casts Daring Skyjek, and passes.

Turn 3

T draws Simic Guildgate. He attacks with Realmwright.

I would like to trade the Realmwright for the Skyjek, thus I need to hide the fact that I have green. Unlikely to work, though.

This is a really confusing play. His Realmwright is his only source of green mana. I could trade it for Daring Skyjek and I don't think he has any pump spells for it using that mana. He might have drawn green in one of the last two turns. On the other hand, he could just be trying to bluff through some damage because he knows I'll consider all this and I might be able to really hurt him by blocking. I'm not sure he'd take that kind of risk though. I could also cast Smite but that seems like a waste. I'll just let it through, only one damage.

G doesn't block and the Realmwright hits. (T 20, G 18). T plays Simic Guildgate and passes.

Ok, I am obviously thinking too much.

G draws Syndicate Enforcer. She plays Plains for Kingpin's Pet and passes. End step, T flashes down Shambleshark, evolving Gyre Sage to 2/3, 1 counter.

Turn 4

T draws Frontline Medic. He plays Forest and casts Drakewing Krasis leaving Plains open. Gyre Sage evolves to 3/4, 2 counters, and Shambleshark evolves to 3/2. T taps Plains and Gyre Sage for Frontline Medic. Medic evolves shark to 4/3. T passes.

Not gonna lie, that's pretty damn scary.

G draws Syndicate Enforcer. She plays Plains and casts Slate Street Ruffian with extort. (T 19, G 19). She passes.

Turn 5

T draws Forest. He plays it and casts Rust Scarab evolving Gyre Sage to 4/5 (3 counters) and Shambleshark to 5/4. He attacks with everything but Rust Scarab and G concedes.

Alpha STRIKE.

Sideboarding

T makes no changes

G makes no changes

Game 3

G plays first. She keeps an opener of Swamp, Plains, Syndic of Tithes, Basilica Screecher, Assault Griffin, Basilica Guards, and Slate Street Ruffian.

T keeps an opening hand of Simic Guildgate, Forest, Frilled Oculus, Rapid Hybridization, Gyre Sage, Frontline Medic, Hands of Binding.

Turn 1

G plays Plains and passes.

T draws Simic Charm, plays Simic Guildgate, and passes.

Turn 2

G draws Plains, plays Swamp, casts Syndic of Tithes, and passes.

T draws Forest, plays it, casts Gyre Sage, and passes.

Turn 3

G draws Contaminated Ground and casts it on Simic Guildgate with extort. (G 21, T 19). T responds with Simic Charm to give his permanents hexproof.

With no other source of blue mana and a hand full of blue cards, I can't let THAT happen. Shame to lose the Simic Charm though.

I'll trade those two cards any day.

G attacks with Syndic of Tithes and hits, then passes. (G 21, T 17).

T draws Island.

Oh, deck, you are SO HILARIOUS.

T plays Forest and casts Frilled Oculus, evolving the Gyre Sage to 2/3 (1 counter). He attacks with Gyre Sage and hits. (G 19, T 17). He passes.

Didn't play Island because I want her to try and use any other mana-fixing hate she has to try to deny my blue rather than hold it in her hand for later, when I have white.

Turn 4

G draws Swamp and plays it. She casts Basilica Guards with extort and passes. (G 20, T 16).

T draws Rust Scarab. He plays Island and taps out, including Gyre Sage, for Rust Scarab, evolving Gyre Sage to 3/4 (2 counters). He passes.

Turn 5

G draws Executioner's Swing. She casts Basilica Screecher with 1 extort, leaving a Plains open, and passes. (G 21, T 15).

Going to save the swing for a little bit. With any luck he'll think I have Smite.

T draws Shambleshark. He attacks with Rust Scarab.

She probably has Smite, but that's ok because Rust Scarab has done its job of evolving and I'll need to deal with the Smite sooner or later.

Scarab hits. (G 17, T 15). T passes.

Damn.

Or not.

Turn 6

G draws Millennial Gargoyle. She attacks with Basilica Screecher and hits. (G 17, T 14). She passes. End step, T flashes down Shambleshark.

T draws Forest and plays it.

This is an important and difficult moment. My hand is Medic, Hybridization, and Hands of Binding. My board is Sage, Oculus, Scarab, Shark. Her board is Syndic, Guards, and a tapped screecher, with four open lands and a hand of four cards. Possibly she's not casting things because she fears Rust Scarab again though. My instinct tells me that Hands of Binding will need to be used to kill her, but I don't really quite have the board advantage that I'd need to to make for a really effective hands; I have no fliers. Still, if I put it onto the Scarab, she will either have to take the ciphered Hands, or else chop block. That seems good.

T casts Hands of Binding tapping down Syndic of Tithes, ciphering onto Rust Scarab. Then he attacks with Gyre Sage, Frilled Oculus, and Rust Scarab. After G declares no blockers, T pumps Frilled Oculus and everything hits. (T 14, G 8). Ciphered copy of Hands hits Basilica Guards. T passes. End step, G kills Rust Scarab with Executioner's Swing.

Intense!

Turn 7

G draws Plains and plays it. She casts Assault Griffin with 1 extort and passes. (T 13, G 9).

T draws Forest and plays it. He attacks with all his creatures. Assault Griffin blocks Gyre Sage and Basilica Screecher blocks Shambleshark; Oculus goes unblocked. Oculus gets pumped, and T casts Rapid Hybridization targeting Gyre Sage, killing Sage, creating the token, and evolving Shambleshark to 3/2.

MY FROG LIZARD IS VERY LEARNED IN DRUIDIC LORE.

Basilica Screecher dies, Shark lives, and Oculus hits. (T 13, G 6). T passes.

I'm just glad I get to untap things now.

Turn 8

G draws Zarichi Tiger and casts it with extort. (T 12, G 7). She passes.

Need to get him going immediately. I will win this game if I can just stabilize and gain some life.

T draws Prophetic Prism and casts it, drawing Island. He plays Island. He casts Frontline Medic evolving Shambleshark to 4/3. He attacks with Frilled Oculus, but G blocks with Griffin and Syndic. In response, C pumps it, and Oculus, Griffin, and Syndic all die. T passes.

I could wait until next turn, but she's tapped out and this 2 for 1 favors me anyway. All the removal I've seen from her so far won't work with Frontline Medic now out.

Turn 9

G draws Alms Beast. She casts it with extort. (T 11, G 8). She passes.

T draws Shambleshark and attacks with everything. Alms Beast blocks Shambleshark and Frog Lizard is blocked by Basilica Guards. Medic hits. (T 15, G 5). T passes.

Turn 10

G draws Orzhov Charm. She casts it with extort on Frontline Medic and passes. (T 15, G 2). End step, T flashes down Shambleshark.

She had to do it, but I am now super close to killing her. Gimme a flier or Gridlock and I'll kill her.

T draws Plains and plays it. He passes. G activates Tiger (T 15, G 4).

Turn 11

G draws Aerial Maneuver. She casts Millennial Gargoyle with extort. (T 14, G 5). She passes.

T draws Island, does nothing, and passes.

C'moooonnnn, topdeck.

Turn 12

G draws Swamp and plays it. She casts Slate Street Ruffian with extort, then attacks with Millennial Gargoyle and hits. (T 12, G 6). She passes.

T draws Cloudfin Raptor. He casts it and passes.

This island is definitely a Simic Charm.

Turn 13

G draws Daring Skyjek. She casts it with extort. (T 11, G 7). She attacks with Millenial Gargoyle and Slate Street Ruffian. T blocks Ruffian with the 2/1 Shambleshark, discarding Island. Shark and Ruffian die, Gargoyle hits. (T 9, G 7). G passes.

Worth it to preserve my peace of mind.

T draws Plains.

Ok, need to draw out next time for sure; running out of time.

T does nothing and passes. G uses the Tiger. (G 9, T 9).

Turn 14

G draws Smite. She attacks with Gargoyle and hits. (G 9, T 7). She passes.

T draws Shambleshark. He does nothing and passes. G uses the Tiger. (G 11, T 7).

Turn 15

G draws Syndicate Enforcer and casts it with extort. (G 12, T 6). She attacks with the gargoyle and hits. (G 12, T 4). She passes. End step, T flashes down Shambleshark.

T draws Angelic Skirmisher.

OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU ANGELIC SKIRMISHER.

T casts Angelic Skirmisher, evolving the sharks to 5/4 and 3/2, and the Raptor to 1/2.

Well this just got complicated all of a sudden.

That was the easy part. Now the hard part is deciding if and how I attack.

Her board is Basilica Guards, Zarichi Tiger, Alms Beast, a tapped Millennial Gargoyle, Daring Skyjek, and Syndicate Enforcer. My board is 3/3 Frog Lizard, 5/4 Shambleshark, 1/2 Cloudfin Raptor, 3/2 Shambleshark, and 4/4 Angelic Skirmisher. I have a single land in hand and am showing two mana open. She has a single Plains open, 2 cards in hand, which means I need to worry about Smite. She has 12 life and can't increase it until her next turn. This requires calculation.

If I give everything first strike and attack with everything, what happens? Cloudfin would bring her to 11 because she has no untapped fliers. She would block the 5/4 shark with Alms Beast, one of the 3 power creatures with Guards, and just take the rest; that's not good.

So the goal here should probably be to gain life rather than to try to kill her immediately since Vigilance gets me no particularly better results than First Strike. I think the play for now is to use Skirmisher to gain me 1 life with the raptor, then sit back and see what happens next turn. This might also bait out a Smite if she has it. I wish Skirmisher gave stuff flying.

T names lifelink with Skirmisher and attacks with the Raptor, which hits. (G 11, T 5). T passes.

Turn 16

G draws Swamp and plays it. Entering combat, T chooses lifelink. G attacks with Alms Beast, Millenial Gargoyle, and Daring Skyjek.

Oh man, her attacking with the Skyjek is bad, bad news. That means she may have Aerial Maneuver or some such. I can't just let all this through, though. I have to block Alms Beast and one of the fliers or I'm dead; the question is, do I block the Skyjek with Angelic Skirmisher or Cloudfin Raptor. Based on my best poker read on Grim, I think she has the Maneuver, so I'll block with the Cloudfin Raptor.

T blocks Skyjek with Raptor and Alms Beast with 3/3 Frog Lizard.

FROG LIZARD SACRIFICE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

G uses Aerial Maneuver on Alms Beast with extort. (G 13, T 4). Frog Lizard, Raptor, and Skyjek die; Frog Lizard does not deal damage to Alms Beast, but Raptor lifelinks for one off of killing Skyjek. Gargoyle hits. (G 13, T 3).

Well, I read it correctly, but she did use it in a rather unexpected way. This seems less efficient, although I remain in the life danger zone as a result.

G passes.

T draws Gridlock.

I'm TOPDECKIN', come check it and see/I GOT A FEVER of Gridlock for threeeeee.

T casts Gridlock for 3 and taps down Grim's remaining untapped creatures. In response she activates Tiger. (G 15, T 3). T names lifelink and attacks with all his creatures for 12 damage. (T 15, G 3).

I thought he'd choose vigilance, but now that I think about it, that's probably better. I have a lot of damage on board and he's tapped out now. But if I attack with a bunch of stuff and fail to kill him, he'll win. This has been really interesting.

Turn 17

G draws Zarichi Tiger and casts it with extort. (T 14, G 4). She attacks with all her creatures except the new tiger and Basilica Guards. They all hit. (G 4, T 1).

I think she forgot that she has two extort creatures on the board. Not that I'm complaining.

Now I can win as long as I can even cast Smite

T draws Frontline Medic. He chooses first strike and attacks with everything. G blocks the 3/2 shark with Basilica Guards, then casts an extorted Smite targeting Shambleshark. (G 4, T 0). Grim wins the match 2-1.

Aw, man. Could you please just give me one combat phase? I pointed out to her that she could have won via double extort on her turn, and she just said "Oh. Well that wouldn't have been as dramatic."

Thoughts

I tried my best on that one, and just needed a little bit better drawing luck to win in games 1 and especially 3 when I twice dropped her below 4 life. That was a very mentally taxing match; complex combat calculations are not something I like doing, though I can if I have to. Plus there were so many tricks and dudes flying everywhere. I may have erred somewhere, but if I did, I lack the skill to recognize it. Well-played from Grim, also, other than forgetting that she had double extort.

That deck is pretty scary, but I think I had just enough disruption to handle it. In game 3, extort and lifegain became incredibly important for I think the first time all tournament for me. I have been hating that I had to include Zarichi Tiger all tournament long except in this match, where the nice kitty won it for me.

Aw man... That's disappointing, but whatcha gonna do.

I do have to say though, I think choosing vigilance turn 16 of game 3 would have won you the game. You could have swung leaving her at 3 life, then chosen lifelink during her attack step and gained life anyways, though of course not that much. Swinging out like that left you open to too much unnecessary damage :(

Also, the current game win percentages for the top 3, which will be used as tiebreakers since anyone tied is going to have the same opponent match win %:

Elaine -.769

Grim - .714

Tappedout - .692

Wow. That last game was great stuff

March 11, 2013 7:45 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #4

@Goody - My thinking was that if I used vigilance, she could kill me with extort in very short order; she'd just need to draw a spell to win, assuming she already had one in hand. With Lifelink, I at least force her to go all-in and make her vulnerable the turn after.

March 11, 2013 7:57 p.m.

Just one too many removal tools in Grim's deck. I figured this was going to come down to whichever deck got better draws.

Sad shark face

I just have to say I've loved reading this series. Great work! A quick question though, how were you able to cast Simic Charm on Game 3, Turn 3. Weren't you tapped out?

March 11, 2013 9:45 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #7

Hm, from the transcription, it sure looks like I should have been. But I don't remember being tapped out when that happened. Transcription error, perhaps; we have to write down the plays as they happen and sometimes we do make mistakes. In any case, Grim won that game anyway, so hey.

March 11, 2013 9:47 p.m.

Oh alrighty. Well again, great articles.

this is a little off topic but how do you get your deck link to be posted like that KrazyCaley?

Without the double brackets, it looks like this:

Generally, the formula is

ohh. not that complicated. thanks!

Draugo says... #12

Considering that on turn 15 you forgot to evolve the Cloudfin Raptor when you flashed in the Shambleshark and on turn 16 you blocked Daring Skyjek with tapped Cloudfin Raptor that attacked on the previous turn I'd say that we deserved to lose the last game. Sadly it cost us the match but oh well...

March 12, 2013 3:13 a.m.

KrazyCaley says... #13

Well, I know for sure that at least a few of these actually-impossible errors didn't happen as transcribed. Still, I do think I forgot to evolve Cloudfin Raptor.

March 12, 2013 4:28 a.m.

KrazyCaley says... #14

Btw, all, I'll try to play against P.T. and transfer the transcription over by really late tomorrow, but I might not be able to. Might have to wait a while before you see the next one.

March 12, 2013 6:52 a.m.

CyRRdaR says... #15

I'm trying to figure out how you could have used Gridlock during her turn instead of yours, but there was not enough damage to kill him in two swings anyway (the 1st swing with just the angel, the second with everything), due to the tiger, and she would have just used Smite on the shark if you had attacked with everything without tapping her stuff out.

This game was really close, but the manaflood game 3 was followed by 2 pure top decks, which were not enough to let you win it. Too bad it happenned so late in the game!

March 12, 2013 7:05 a.m.

KrazyCaley says... #16

Yeah, drawing really anything during that tense period when she was at super low life would have won immediately, but it just didn't pan out. Ah well, you win some, you lose some. If she loses to Elaine, we'll still have a shot at the title if we can beat P.T. and Elaine because we have relatively fewer game losses than they do, considering our match records.

Of course, if Elaine defeats Grim, then she'll be 6-0 heading into our match. I have no idea what deck racks up no defeats at all; I would not have given an Orzhov deck credit for the accomplishment of Grim's deck. I fear I do not understand this format as well as I thought.

March 12, 2013 7:09 a.m.

I think the strength of Orzhov is the removal. Extort doesn't win games, but it allows the player to stay in the game just long enough to draw answers or enough creatures to bully a kill. Grim has built a very nice deck playing to those strengths. That said, I think she is going to have a hard time with Elaine... for reasons I won't get into.

The format seems heavy in the 3/3 range. When we get a creature beyond that range, like the angel or our 4/5 beast, things get fun.

March 12, 2013 9:54 a.m.

jkarnes says... #18

@KrazyCaley: The first blocking turn the Angelic Skirmisher was down should have been elected to be First Strike.

The logic behind this is that if she is that her only removal spells we have seen are Executioner's Swing and Smite. Swing does not help her against First Strike as the creature must deal damage to be a legal target. If the only thing we're afraid of is Smite then it makes sense to do it this way (as we can't grant flying and therefore, Aerial Manuver would have to be used before the declare blockers step). It makes it much harder for her to swing into you at a profit and allows for a very large swing back in your favor with Lifelink on the following turn.

March 12, 2013 10:33 a.m.

vic says... #19

Wow, tough one. Helluva match. Great call on guessing the Aerial Maneuver.

Game 3 T6, we hit Grim for 10, but it shows only 9 taken off. Might not have made a difference.

Question: Why did you cast Rapid Hybridization on the 3/4 Gyre Sage vs the Assault Griffin, rather than let the Sage eat the Griffin? I know it let you keep the baby shark alive, but I was surprised by that trade.

March 12, 2013 10:44 a.m.

sewellius says... #20

Game 1 turn 8, I thought you killed Grim's Daring Skyjek. How was she able to double block your Rust Scarab with it and the Zarichi Tiger? I don't think you should have lost it then, which would have made a world of difference in that game. Two Tigers wouldn't have killed the Scarab, either.

Did I miss an extra Skyjek being cast somewhere?

March 12, 2013 11:17 a.m.

jkarnes says... #21

Game 1, Turn 9:

"T draws Plains. He attacks with Rust Scarab and Metropolis Sprite . G blocks Scarab with the new Zarichi Tiger and Daring Skyjek . T pumps the Sprite, which hits. Scarab, Tiger, and Skyjek all die. (T 23, G 14)."

I demand a rematch. This is an impossibility as described by sewellius because the Daring Skyjek died during turn 8. This, in turn, would not allow for the Rust Scarab to die which would have essentially made two cards in Grim's hand totally dead (and left us with a live Scarab!).

March 12, 2013 11:54 a.m.

exarkun809 says... #22

Can we pleaaaaase cut Metropolis Sprite for something? Hands of Binding or Angelic Skirmisher or Realmwright are all better to me.

March 12, 2013 2:48 p.m.

vic says... #23

KrazyCaley I hope you can explain that kerfuffle about the killed Daring Skyjek to us. Is it a transcription error? If so, what really happened? Between that and the extra lifepoint that Grim should have been down, that changes things, for sure.

March 12, 2013 4:38 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #24

@everybody - I can't remember the actual truth of what happens and I don't actually take down the transcriptions because to do that and play would be impossible without MTGO. All of the key moments seem more or less correct. I think that the explanation is that a- transcribing this game as it happened was difficult because it was somewhat complex, leading to b- turns were missed, or erroneously merged into each other. When I got the transcription originally, it had a lot of this

Turn 5 -

Grim does some sorcery-speed stuff

Caley does some sorcery-speed stuff.

I thought this was just a mistake about where the turn header went, but it might have been more serious. I think I'm going to have to start transcribing these games myself, poor game performance or no; it's tough to do so when you have to shuffle back and forth between the players, and you yourself aren't analyzing what's going on on the board in great detail because you have so much else to do. The only problem with that would be that I'd have to at least have the opponent record their draws every turn, and then that would be bothering my OPPONENT with something to do, but since this is for educational purposes only, that might be ok. It'll slow the game way down, but I think it's better than doing it fast and messing it up.

Just a thought... If you're playing these in person, set up a video recorder of some type. Then you can compare your notes with what you can make out on the video. Focus on describing things verbally as you play the game.

KrazyCaley I don't think you should have to do the transcriptions and play.

The transcription appears to be good for the most part. I saw a place where playing a Forest clearly must have meant playing a Plains(earlier match). That's understandable, and not a big problem. It flows well, it's easy to read, the amount of thought/commentary is good. Overall, it's pretty good, and the occasional boo boo is fine. It's just that this is different than typing "Forest" instead of "Plains".

We're wondering if maybe there actually was a mistake in the game play, like when you blocked a flyer with a non-flyer before, and that maybe a rematch is warranted. We can't see what else it could be.

I'm with vic on this one. As the blocks were clearly illustrated in turn 8 it leads me to believe that somehow the Daring Skyjek didn't make its way off the battlefield. Either a combat trick was played and not recorded or it was simply GPE on both sides of the field; in either instance, a rematch is warranted.
