This is an "Extreme" Budget version of the Mono Green Modern deck usually called "Stompy". The deck relies on a cheap mana base (you could even replace the Treetop Villages with Forests if you absolutely had to) and cheap redundant threats that play to the board faster than your opponents can find answers.
It's a good beginner deck for Modern if you aren't sure how the format plays because all of the cards together cost less than a single creature in many "Tier 1" decks. You also get to play an interactive game of Magic, using Vines of Vastwood to prevent kills and combos alike. You'll learn when it's proper to mulligan or keep 1-2 land hands, how to order your spells, and to be watchful of triggers.
While other decks will be more competitive, if you expect ~20 people or less at your tournaments/FNMs, there's no reason you couldn't outplay them and place with this deck. You'll get to see how other decks in the format play out and if you can't find another one you like, you can upgrade your Stompy deck with powerful and relatively affordable threats like Thrun, the Last Troll (replace the 4 drops), and even upgraded but still budget beaters like Avatar of the Resolute.
