Took a couple years off MTG, thinking of running Storm...

Modern Deck Help forum

So yes, I know Gitaxian Probe got the ax. But Baral, Chief of Compliance also showed up, and I want to play this guy (It's probably a good idea to play a not-so-interactive deck 'cause I'm rusty anyway). I'm not trying to light the world on fire, just play, and win a few.

But I have some questions, mostly about sideboards. I've noticed people (at least people at top8) have been running Thing in the Ice  Flip on the side - what's the deal? Where does this get you a win that Empty the Warrens doesn't? Is it just there for the bounce effect? Are there tons of Pyroclasms out there? And why the 1-of EtWs in a lot of mainboards? Speaking of Pyroclasms, is a new Tron or Eldrazi deck a hard matchup for some reason? Why is anyone bothering with Crumble to Dust?

So any sideboard/meta advice is appreciated, along with any general advice about running this iteration of the deck.

Here's what I'm thinking of running: my version

And a more standard list for reference: Baral Storm

I also noticed 1-2 decks running Madcap Experiment and Platinum Emperion on the side, any thoughts on that?

EtW has a different name, so Gifts Ungiven can tutor for Grapeshot, EtW, and two other things. (Past in Flames or rituals) Running it mainboard just increases the resiliency of the combo. If you're about to fizzle, you can get 8-20 1/1s to beat down your opponent.

TiTi gives protection against some storm hate. Eidolon of Rhetoric, Rule of Law, and similar spells totally wreck storm, and TiTi gives you an additional out of beating face with a 7/8 monster.

When I play storm online, I find that all in aggro decks out-tempo me a bit, especially when they bolt my electromancers. (Which is always) If you resolve a Platinum Emperion, those decks will not win through it. Period.

On a side note, now is probably the best time to buy into storm if you haven't yet. Gifts and Serum Visions are dropping from their reprint in MM3, and the other staples are going nowhere but up.

Have fun, and may your storm counts be as high as a baby koala on medical marijuana!

Platinum Emperion Combo is actually amazing and I would highly recommend it to every single deck playing red that struggles against aggro. It's especially potent in storm because you can play it as early as turn 2. I am playing it in RG breach sideboard even though I probably shouldn't be.

Hmmmm... Thanks KingTorg1. Yes, of course on EtW, can't believed I missed that it works better in the GU package.

I guess a one-of TitI is a good call, I had no idea anyone was actually running those cards.

And thanks Murpy. It is a really powerful effect, I'll definiitely consider that.
