My Triskaidekaphobia Win Condtion Deck

Modern Deck Help forum

I really wanted to find a combo to win with Triskaidekaphobia because of how weird the card is! I was looking through cards, and found that Tree of Redemption would put a player at 13 life! So thus, a combo deck all about forcing your opponent to take the tree and use it on themselves was born! I was wondering what you guys think (especially since I'm not really a modern player- though I may try to build this deck!) and if you had any suggestions to make the deck run better!

The Big Gambit No. 13

Nope, it won't work. Sorry to be blunt, but you'll never win any games with this deck, casual or not. Modern is an extremely fast format where you rarely ever want to play anything that costs more than 4 mana... and you have a whopping FIFTEEN cards that cost 5 or 6 mana to cast (not to mention the 11 4-drops). You'll be dead long before you get to cast even one of those, let alone all the ones you need.

Modern also happens to be the format with the most removal in MtG. Even IF you manage to give an opponent a Tree of Redemption (and you won't), you know what's gonna happen? They'll kill it with Path to Exile. Or Go for the Throat. Or Terminate. Or Victim of Night. Or Vapor Snag. Or Doom Blade. Or any of the other hundred million spells out there that say "destroy/exile target creature", of which any player with some minimal understanding of the game will be guaranteed to be running at least 4 to 6 copies in their deck.

Oh, and even if they can't kill that Tree of Redemption you landed on turn 4, that doesn't mean the game is over for them. You still need four mana to play Triskaidekaphobia (which they'll readily destroy with Disenchant or Destructive Revelry). And five mana to proc Avarice Totem (if they don't Abrupt Decay it first). And either ten mana (TEN MANA!) to cast + activate Mindslaver, or six mana and THREE TURNS of building up Sorin Markov's ultimate (and that's assuming the opponent won't attack Sorin with any creatures or hit it with Lightning Bolts in that meantime - but they will). That amounts to something like 8-10 turns of building up, and that's assuming a) you don't miss any land drops, b) they don't destroy, counter or Thoughtseize away any one of your combo pieces and c) they don't kill you - but they will kill you, because not only does your deck run a million high-CMC cards that are easily dealt with, it also lacks any pieces of interaction - you can't counter spells, destroy permanents, draw cards or protect yourself in any way.

Again, I'm sorry for being harsh, but your strategy just isn't good enough to work in any format, even the jankiest, most casual one - let alone in Modern. I usually give new players tips on how to make their deck at least decent, but Triskaidekaphobia + Tree of Redemption + Mindslaver just can't be a decent combo no matter what. So, my advice is forget about that deck, start reading some articles about how Modern works and looking at some good decklists, have a better understanding of the format and then try to come up with a way to make Triskaidekaphobia work - or just give up on Modern and go full casual, which I assume is the best choice for you. Or maybe try EDH? I dunno.

square711 Yeah, I know it's a pretty janky deck. I mean the combo requires basically best case scenario every game to pull of the win. I just really wanted to see if making a combo where Triskaidekaphobia was a possible guaranteed win condition. I might try building a commander deck with plenty of tutors and this combo as a side win condition because of how slower Commander is over the faster modern format. Thanks a lot for the actual in depth commentary on the deck instead of saying "that's dumb" and leaving it at that. Constructive criticism goes a long way. For a more serious modern deck, I built a budget burn deck out of cards I had lying around that I may invest in making more competitive if you want to give that a look. Horror-ble Burn

Thanks again for the feedback!

Puca's Mischief + The new Emrakul + Triskdekaphobia + Tree of Redemption would allow you to pass turn, give control of the tree to your opponent, control their turn and make them tap it in their untap step, and during their upkeep that have 13 life. Could work.

Add Magus of the Mirror. That way, you can give yourself 13 life, exchange life totals with your opponent, and make them lose all at the beginning of your next upkeep.

Magus of the Mirror is absolutely perfect. I won't need to splash red at that point.
