hey, ive currently been playing a white dnt deck given to me by a friend but i have a few questions.

first is how does dnt win? slow poking? i got the controll element down but killing feels slow (i dont run swords btw)

secondly, i love BW, any chance you guys could reccomend good black creatures for a taxes deck?

3rdly does Aether Vial start getting charges the next turn? it does right my friend made an arguement

How does the deck win? usually just getting in the incremental damage over and over, two points with Thalia here, three with flickerwisp there, and eventually killing them.

Black creatures tend to not be run in the deck, Kambal, Consul of Allocation is one of the few black creatures that sees any amount of play in the build.

Aether vial gets its first counter on your upkeep the turn after you play it. reading the card explains the card.

  1. Yep, D&T wins by slowly poking its opponent to death. Swords are terrible in Modern, so don't run them.

  2. There's a very successful D&T variant (in fact, it's the most successful version of the deck in Modern) called Eldrazi and Taxes which uses Tidehollow Sculler, Wasteland Strangler, Eldrazi Displacer, and Thought-Knot Seer. Dark Confidant is also a thing they often run.

  3. Yes, Aether Vial starts ticking up on the upkeep of the turn after you play it.

glg3nstlftw,
I'm with rothgar13 on recommending Eldrazi and Taxes. I've only been on the other side of the table from it, but find it a MUCH tougher matchup than the Mono-W version.

Here's a good though slightly dated article on the deck.

Draw well!

Only thing to be very aware of with vial is that adding counters to it happens on "may" basis - if you move out of upkeep and into draw, you have declined to add a counters, ALSO if you just forgot.

There's a couple of alternative wincons, you can play. Akroma, Angel of Fury, for example - trick is to play it as a morph, then blink it with Flickerwisp or Restoration Angel.

Eldrazi and taxes play a few creatures with bigger bodies, like Thought-Knot Seer and that gives it a more stable clock.

I play legacy D&T. Winning is done by denying your opponent EVERYTHING while you slowly poke them for 2-4 dmg per turn. Its a beautiful thing to do, but im quite sadistic when it comes to games. Modern D&T i guess is more aggro since you dont have Wasteland, Rishadan Port and Karakas.

Always put a dice on top of your library as a reminder of Aether Vial

If you're interested in checking out an Eldrazi and Taxes build here's mine:

The Templar Tax

I'm still fine tuning it but it's a start.
