Is Maverick Bad in Legacy?

Legacy Deck Help forum

I asked a similar question about two days ago. However, from that post I was lead to Maverick. My question is: Is Maverick bad in Legacy?

It's one of those decks that is super goo when it's good, and kind of meh the other half of the time. So yes and no.

I've recently made a dark maverick on MTGO, and is doing decent, but I would suggest dark, it gives you access to Abrupt decay, and a more consistent death-rite shaman...

Yeah, I'd play Dark Maverick if I played Maverick.

Yeah, I think Dark Maverick has to be the way to go right now. The interaction it adds to the deck is a little bit too important to ignore.

And Dark Confidant as a good two-drop.

Personally I think this "dark maverick" deck is just a bad Junk deck. The interactions aren't any better. If you can tell me one time where dark maverick has won using DRS I will maybe concede. Good old maverick has so many plays to beat down on unfair decks, and even stomps on delver decks. It has plenty of interactions with being able to tutor just about every turn, and the combat tricks are among the best legacy has ever seen. Qasali Pridemage will get just about everything that actually bothers you, so Abrupt Decay is only a marginal improvement. Its biggest disadvantage is actually other fair decks, and I think dark maverick is even weaker in that matchup. Dark Maverick does have a slightly better game against combo, but after the sideboard the advantage is minimal in my experience.

Lastly this has nothing to do with the deck itself, but I hate the name. Its like calling zoo red maverick or naya maverick, it just doesn't make sense. The two are actually very different decks and should have very different names.

The meta hasn't been favorable for Maverick for a while because the deck couldn't keep up with Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time. With both cards out of the format, I think we'll see decks like Maverick, Punishing Jund, and Shardless BUG make come backs.

@titanreaver: Deathrite Shaman is purely for mana fixing and occasional graveyard disruption. There's no reason to Birds of Paradise over it.

I think you're on the nose about how well it does vs. other fair decks, where you're expecting Wastelands and Force of Will. Being in only two colors helps, along with resolving AEther Vial turns off a significant portion of their deck.

My understanding of the name is it refers to G/W/x Hate Crap dot deck. When I hear just plain "Junk," I think of Liliana of the Veil, Dark Confidant, and Deathrite Shaman forming an unholy trinity of value. One is more on the aggro side of things and the other is more midrange.

Maverick refers to the "rogue" nature of the deck and typically only meant G/W. It has seen other versions like the splash of red for the Grove of the Burnwillows + Punishing Fire combo, just like jund did, then the black got added at some point later.

Junk really doesn't mean anything anymore honestly, all it refers to at this point is B/G/W. Especially since its one of those decks that have been around so long, there is not a single card (except the lands) that are still in the deck.

Also I agree that Deathrite Shaman is mostly better than Birds of Paradise but I don't think any maverick deck plays birds. They play Noble Hierarch but not birds. I agree that if you are playing the dark variant DRS is a powerful card, but I just am not such a huge fan of it for this , especially since it almost always ends up shrinking yor Knight of the Reliquary

I can't remember what the three tier 1 decks of the format are currently after the DDT ban, but look through the ChannelFireball posts from the last two weeks, one of the articles was about that. ANT was one of them, and I think Miracles was another. Forget the third, but if you can't beat ANT and Miracles easily (maverick cannot do so with Storm, not sure with Miracles), then you probably shouldn't be playing the deck. At the very least, tune your deck to interact with those.

I would say that the ANT matchup is better than you think, as is miracles. Gaddock Teeg does a lot of work in both matchups protecting him is very good. With him on the board ANT literally can't win until they deal with him and if you get a mom protecting him then it's over. Miracles is kinda the same, with Teeg they can't play Terminus or Jace. The dark version also gets Abrupt Decay.
