"Are you going to win on your next turn?"

Sorry in advance, I just want to rant a bit. I was playing my friends Savra, Queen of the Golgari deck in a 4-person FFA and resolved a Behold the Beyond. The cards I found were a Mitotic Slime, Phyrexian Altar, and Ever After, which, together with the Rune-Scarred Demon already in my graveyard creates an infinite combo. I pass the turn, and the opponent sitting to my right asks, "Are you going to win the game on your next turn?"

Now, I'm stuck in a shitty spot. The fact is, I'm going to try to win on my next turn. But admitting as much is telling my opponents (including the RU spellslinger deck across the table from me) that they should either kill me now, or save disruption to use on me. So I said "No, I won't."

My turn rolls around, and I combo off, killing everyone, and the guy who asked gets upset, saying "I woulda killed you if I'd known, and you said you weren't going to." It left a very bitter taste in my mouth, and turned what should have been a well-deserved victory into a cheat.

TL;DR- someone asked for information he had no right to and was butthurt when I won because I didn't answer truthfully.

Eh. His fault for metagaming. It's less fun of a game to change how you play based on what someone claims they will do. Easier to just assume the worst and hold up mana for the untaps after a triple tutor.

Sounds like their problem, you have no reason to disclose your gameplan to anyone, even in a casual game. Tell the dude to nut up and get over it because he should have just killed you then.

Sucks that that guy ruined both your and his own fun, but that kinda happens sometimes.

Tell the kid to grow up and get the hell over it.

Seriously. That's just stupid.

Make sure to not accidentally drink his soda. God forbid that happens.

Just tell people it depends. If they are going to be an ass and ask that question tell them it depends. If they keep asking I would tell them to shut up and play or concede. You shouldn't have your well fought for win ruined because some kid doesn't know how to play the game politely.

And you frankly shouldn't feel bad. At all.

Sorry - a rude response on my part.

But that's just plain stupid. Those are the kind of players I hear playing Commander when I'm working at the shop and those are the very kinds of players I would never have the tolerance for (which leads to a large part of the reason I don't play Commander).

That guy needs to go scry him a river, build a bridge, and get over it. He was basically asking "Should me and everybody else here band together and body you so that you cannot have fun?"

June 3, 2016 4:42 p.m.

I'm sorry that his reaction ruined both of your fun.

My favorite response to a question that you have no obligation to answer is "hmm, that's a good question" and move on.

I like to just tell people "I have the capability to". I mean frankly if someone is playing a graveyard based deck and triple tutors I'm likely to kill them on principle. I mean hell if someone resolves Doomsday I'm killing them. Let alone "Doomsday, now with less obvious downsides".

I hear that question a LOT in my group (well, league). Ugh, it's just so frustrating because it's not right to ask such a question. Personally, I want to go to a new group but there's no one else around... :/

When people ask me (in EDH or FNM), I just say "I don't know. We'll see."

If someone asks you a question that isn't public information, you don't have to answer. Try not to lie, though, especially if it's casual like EDH is.

If someone tutors up three cards in a single turn and you have the means to kill them and don't, you deserve to lose. Sorry, but it's that simple. I've been thinking, but I'm pretty sure I don't have a deck where, if I were to tutor three cards and went undisrupted I wouldn't win the next turn. It's not about what you said, this is about common sense. Someone has seven mana and tutors up three cards in a singleton format. What the hell do they think is going to happen?

zandl has the perfect response and i do the same. "I don't know i guess we'll see" hides your plan with enough politeness.

There is a bit of a grey area there. As it was previously mentioned, you do not need to tell your opponents what your plans are, and indeed it is on them to look at the field and decide for themselves if you are capable of winning or not. However there is the whole 'misrepresenting the state of play' clause, where you must give accurate information when you decide to tell someone. You cannot lie about the number of cards in hand, or if a guy is tapped or not, ect ect. So if some one asked you "Are you capable of winning next turn?" and you chose to answer them(you dont have to if you dont want), then I believe you would have to answer "Yes", because otherwise you are misrepresenting the state of play and giving them false information if you said "No.". Again though, you dont have to answer their question if you dont want, it is on them to do their own figurings as to what you are capable of.

AFAIK, as long as something isn't public information (hand, library, battlefield, other zones), you're allowed to lie all you want. I vaguely recall hearing this a few times, but I'd ask a judge about it.

It's not a great way to make friends, but you can do it.

aholder7 says... #17

you can't lie about game state such as tapped cards, life totals, cards in hand, etc. but @RoarMaster, you do not have to tell someone what you are capable of. Also if your opponent can't call you on something, then you can basically lie. example: you can crack a fetch land, pay 1 life, and say fail to find. This generally means you do not have any legal targets in your deck. but even if your opponent knows you have a legal target in your deck (maybe through a card that reveals the top card of a library), they can't correct you and tell you that you have legal targets. This is because the library is a hidden zone. your opponent isn't privy to that information. same applies to your hand. if someone asks if you're able to do something to do something, you have no obligation to tell them the truth or anything at all.

In a game where politics comes into play why not use the best trick in politics? Lie your ass off but as stated above that will usually dmiminish people willing to play with you. I'm asked this question a lot during games. One of my decks runs like 60 lands and I have "packages" of utility lands that I'll grab with Tempt with Discovery that depending on participating players will excellerate my game or just plain end it. Every time I go to cast it I'm always asked it I'm winning the game. My usual response is " I won't the game before you even say down"

I always just ask my opponent(s) if they're conceding when they ask that question.

This kind of daftness is exactly why I hate EDH. It always comes down to this kind of "let me ask you a stupid question and get buttrabid when I don't like the answer" crap. If my experiences with the "format" are any indication, he probably held a grudge over it and spent as much time as he could to prevent you from winning the next 3-6 games.

@GreenYawgmoth heck I've played with people who do just that for the simple fact that they dont like me as a person, for whatever excuse. It's fairly annoying to play people like that, tis the only issue I have with this game; people who take it far more seriously than they need to.
