Utter End Speculation

Economics forum

As of right now Utter End has dived to just over $1 each and about $8 for the foil promo.

My personal thoughts are it will never be a big $ card for standard unless there's a big change in meta (like esper control coming into strength). But, it looks like a really nice EDH removal. In Commander there are SO many nasty indestructible things hitting the table, and B/W colors end up in a lot of EDH builds. 4 mana isn't that much in EDH, either, especially if it's used to remove those nasty 6,7,8+ mana bombs (Eldrazi..?). I think $6-7ish well after rotation as an EDH card seems reasonable.

What are everyone's thoughts on the future price of this card in standard and especially way down the road as an EDH tool?

It may go up after it is out of print, maybe to $5

I think Utter End is great, but I don't see it becoming enough of an EDH staple to merit a huge price tag. Not every BWx deck wants to run a 4-mana removal spell. I don't play standard so I'm not in a position to comment on how the standard meta will affect its price (I remember being pleasantly surprised when my Hellrider jumped from $0.50 to $12), but in terms of EDH demand I don't see it ever being more than a $2-3 card.

It's my spec card for the set. I, and other people at my LGS, have been drawing parallels to Vindicate. Utter End costs one colorless more, but also exiles instead of destroys and is instant speed instead of sorcery. I think it has the potential to gain value for the EDH crowd

Utter End seems like an easy and probable card to be reprinted. Most likely a $1-3 card when out of Standard.

its a meh card in any format. Probably 4 for 1.99 after rotation.

I'd say it will hover around 2 dollars or so after rotation, before going up to 3. Not likely to be a big money card.

I play Orzhov a lot, so I have 3 of the promos and 2 normals. I can see this being 3-4 dollars post-roast for EDH. That's probably a few years down the road, though. Should BW/x Control/Midrange suddenly become huge, it could go up during standard days, but I think I'm the only one running it in any significant numbers now (I curve out at 3 of those in my Mardu Aristocrats).

It won't be worth anything for EDH- those colors already have Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Act of Authority, Ashen Rider, and white's infinite supply of other "Exile target __" cards. Sure, Utter End is good. But if it were going to see a spike in price due to EDH play, it would have happened already.

I see it going three to five dollars tops, since it's not gonna see constructed play outside Standard. It's a great piece of spot removal for EDH, along with stuff like Unmake. However, EDH only wants a single, and not every deck will even use it. Given these factors, I don't think it'll ever hit double digits, even with foils and promos. I could be dead wrong though, so I suppose we will see.

Its great for people who missed the Vindicate gravy train. its also an instant, so its not too bad.

Its cheap as crisps now, so load up on a set if you want to go Mardu.

I could see it rising a bit once Hero's Downfall rotates (unless we return to the sweet world where Doom Blade exists), but I don't see it holding any long term value.

I'll just hold onto my foil.

It seems to be used a lot in EDH, all the people with orzhov in their EDH decks have it, but other than that I'm pretty sure it's gonna see 0 play in other formats.

The issue with comparing it to Vindicate is that Vin can hit lands.

November 24, 2014 6:16 p.m.

I've never ever seen someone use Vindicate on a land.

@DarkMagician @ThisIsBullshit I've hit land with Vindicate before. It's been a rare way for me to use it, but it does happen very occasionally. It's either because my opponent is missing land drops early on and I want to cripple them totally, or because they play a land that is comboing in a nasty way, or shutting me down (like Homeward Path or Riptide Laboratory)

But, I still play Utter End as well. If no other reason, I can't have more than one Vindicate in EDH so it's like a second one. It also works beautifully being instant in my Esper control deck.

ThisIsBullshit then you've never seen it played properly.

jerresette I'm not saying don't play Utter End (I personally love the card) I'm just saying using Vindicate as a comparison to try and estimate it's future value is a bad idea. You just pointed out yourself that Vin can cripple your opponent by hitting their mana base which makes it far more versatile than Utter End. I currently own six Ends for EDH and four Vins for competitive play.
