Demigod of Revenge dredge... best for Modern or Legacy?

Deck Help forum

I recently (read: last night) acquired a playset of Demigod of Revenge, and since R/B aggro centered around the Demigod was my Standard deck of fare after Shadowmoor released, I found myself reminiscing of the good times I had with that deck, and resolved to re-build that awesome deck, with some new tweaks now that I'm a more experienced player.

However, my experience in non-EDH constructed building only goes so far, which is why I'm willing to come to you all for help. I've decided upon a Jund dredge shell for the deck (or is that not even the best way to go about it?). What I would like to know is, would the best format for me to build this deck for be Modern or Legacy?

Modern would probably be easier, but Legacy opens up a lot more options (T1 Swamp -> Dark Ritual -> Buried Alive ditching all three Demigod of Revenge). However, I'm concerned about the presence of removal, as Surgical Extraction and Extirpate are things as well, and either one of those will severely hamper the deck (I won't say completely kill, as I'm planning on building the deck to still be able to go off even if a Demigod hits the exile bin).

Thanks in advance!

Off the top of my head I'd think Entomb alone would make the deck a solid contender for Legacy, since you can stuff the graveyard in combination with reanimation effects. Also, while you would have good reason to worry about Surgical Extraction and Extirpate those are no more threatening to you than any other form of graveyard hate is to any other reanimation/dredge variant. You'd just have to tune your sideboard to hate their hate (lots of hating going around!).

I was thinking about Ground Seal so they couldn't target my Demigod with their bull-bull, while at the same time letting me reanimate them as normal (seeing as Demigod doesn't target at all). Plus it cantrips, which is nice.

Just play Modern and build Jund Dredgevine, its a pretty established archetype that actually sometimes plays Demigod of Revenge as a late game closer.

that's a possibility. what are some good Jund Dredgevine staples (aside from Vengevine of course lmao)?

Awesome stuff like Bloodghast, Faithless Looting, Life from the Loam, Raven's Crime, Lotleth Troll, Gravecrawler, and I've seen it see some fringe play but I really liked it in the BUG version I played: Bloodsoaked Champion.

You just named a whole bunch of stuff that I like, so I think we're going to be good to go :D

How many lands should be in a deck like this? I've seen lists run as few as 10 or as many as 18-20.

Dredgevine is definitely not a deck that plays 10 lands (even Burn plays 17-18), I suggest 24 as a starting point and then test and adjust from there.

trying to get bbbbb / rrrrrr is a lot more difficult in a three colored build than 2, and youll be taking like 5+ damage a game from your lands playing 3 colors. Id play BR, 4 demigods, 4 stinkweed imps/ 2-3 darkblasts perhaps for your dredge, cards with flashback are good in a deck like this, sever the bloodline, firebolt come to mind. bloodstained champions too sure

and yes legacy you have access to buried alive, not to mention hymn to tourach, but legacy is just much more explosive, id say stick to modern.

ground seal is not a suitable answer, youll typically be relc of progenitus (sac, draw mode)/nihil spell bombed in experience. Ground seal is only really effective against scavenging ooze, or withered wretch (which nooone really plays, so mostly just the former)

Yeah, he'll take 5 damage to himself easy playing Jund Groves, but heres the difference: in Dredgevine Demigod of Revenge is a fallback late game against control decks. You'd rather just go double Vengevine turn 3ish and go sideways. Jund Vine is an aggro deck and doesn't care about it's own life total nearly as much as it cares about yours lol. Maybe I'm misreading, but that kind of sounds like what kind of deck the OP is wanting

iLikeDirt you're exactly right. Jund and aggro are my two favorite things ever, which is what lead me to get the Demigod of Revenge to begin with. I was thinking the deck would go the Jund dredge route anyways.

Here's my first iteration of the deck list:
