One Kolaghan deck or Two?

Commander Deck Help forum

I built a deck that can alternate between both Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury and Dragonlord Kolaghan. The theme is an aggro deck using a bunch of small guys to launch all-out attacks (with buffs, of course). However, to work with Storm's Fury, I needed to add more dragons. It is then that a problem arose:

I cannot add everything I wanted to add. While I did not want to commit fully to a tribal theme, it still worked against adding some other cards that had potential (ex. Anthem of Rakdos).

I came up with a solution: Have two decks. One piloted by Storm's Fury, where the tribal sub-theme is more fleshed out while still maintaining the original aggro/token plan. The other eschews the tribal sub-theme and commits fully to the agro/token plan.

My question is this: What this the right thing to do? Any thoughts or suggestions are also helpful.

P.S. I don't have an exact decklist(s) yet, because it's all up in the air right now.

The thing about Dragonlord Kolaghan is that it requires the opponent to have the same name card in their own graveyard, which is only against 2 cards, Relentless Rats and Shadowborn Apostle. Even if you do play someone who plays those cards exclusively are so limited that it wouldn't be worth the chance.

If you were going to go with a rakdos commander, there are better cards out there that would get the job done.

Mogis, God of Slaughter for a general hate towards all opponents, Kaervek the Merciless for a control type build, Rakdos, Lord of Riots for a creature build, and Malfegor and Rakdos the Defiler for massive destruction.

I'm just saying, there are better commanders than the ones that are very limited.

Those three do not fit into my plan.

I know Dragonlord's ability is impossible; I'm using her as a mass haste outlet, and not something to be entirely dependent upon.

With Kaervek and Rakdos, you must be dependent on. I hate the idea of being overly dependent on the general, even long after the tuck rule was...tucked away.

Mogis, though, requires a different build entirely, and while he is indestructible, his main effect is too weak for EDH.

Well, I would then say go with the Storm's Fury because it requires spot removal if needed. You could use Bladewing the Risen to return dragons to the battlefield after they get destroyed. Dragonstorm is always nice in dragon decks. Using ramp like Dark Ritual, Seething Song, and plenty of mana rocks can get the dragons out faster.

My biggest piece of advice would be to search the gatherer for key words like 'dragon' or 'return' to help find the right cards for your deck. That's what I do most of the time. I only ask after I complete the build for help so I could tweak it along the way when I can.

I said that Dragon tribal was to be a sub theme. I'm only running ~15 dragons (counting the Kolaghans). I had considered Bladewing, but full-on tribal was something I wanted to avoid. I would've built Scion of the Ur-Dragon because I cannot build Dragon tribal without all 10 Primevals, the 5 FRF dragons, and Sarkhan Unbroken. I tried this a couple times already, and I didn't like it as much as I thought I did.

Storm's Fury is unique in that you will want dragons, but she also wants an army of creatures to attack with her. The more creatures and/or dragons that attack alongside Storm's Fury, the deadlier she becomes.

Also, there are far too many cards for me to add to account for one deck, hence why I'm asking if having two decks (one for each Kolaghan) is a good idea or not.

I think it would be easiest to build a couple prototypes of what you want your version to be. Once you get your ideas on paper, you can narrow down what you want in the deck. It's difficult to say you just want cards without giving guidelines and actually have it written down. Trust me, I tried the ideas floating around in the air, but only when I can see the together, I am able to see synergy that I wouldn't have noticed without putting them into one place.

So please, just build a prototype or 2, whether it's a full list or just a few cards, and I'll be able to help you further. As of right now, I don't see enough to truly be able to help.

Here's the list. Just note that the Kolaghans are interchangeable. Dashing Tempest.
