Grixis Commanders and Leaders (it's been a sec) —April 22, 2020

If I don’t discuss a card, it’s because that card didn’t feel like a card I’d want to play, or I didn’t think it was a viable commander. If I miss any really good options for my commander or leader, please let me know.

I like Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge for a few reasons. For one thing, she doesn’t lose a significant amount of value each time she’s cast. For another, she allows me to play expensive instants and sorceries without owning them. I often play in settings with players who have the money for Timetwisters and Wheels of Fortune so it’d be pretty nice if I could take those spells for myself. And the fact that she scales with each recast is nice too. All in all, Jeleva seems like a pretty fun commander, and I like her colors. She doesn’t seem to have that many synergies which makes me think that any deck with her as commander would have to be a “protect the leader” deck, which doesn’t really allow for as much card diversity as I’d like. For now, I think I’ll move on, but I won’t give up on Jeleva just yet.

Kess, Dissident Mage. Reuse Sorceries. Do I really need to say more? Well, yes… Though reusing sorceries certainly seems fun, I don’t know how I could make my Tiny Leaders deck out of a deck that’s mostly sorceries. Maybe I’m missing something. I doubt it. I don’t think Kess will work very well as my commander for this project.

Marchesa, the Black Rose is great. But she’s kind of a nothing commander. Effects that give +1/+1 counters are now extra good, and aside from that, anything goes. This could work in my favor for this project, but ideally I’d like something more interesting. I’m still going to keep her as a potential option, but I doubt I’ll be using her as my commander.

When I first saw Mishra, Artificer Prodigy, I laughed. A commander, that allows you to get a second copy of the first artifact you play each turn, seems pretty useless in a singleton format. This was so hilarious to me, that I decided to go to google, and Google “Mishra EDH deck” which is how I found this page. This led me down a rabbit-hole of amazing possibilities I’d never thought of before. I’d heard the term “Stax,” but I didn’t actually know what it meant until today. This sounds like a really fun playstyle that allows for a decent amount of variation with how I build the deck, but it also seems REALLY EXPENSIVE. I don’t think I can afford this kind of deck right now. Maybe later in life though.

Tetsuo Umezawa could be a commander or a leader, but he’s just soooo lame. I don’t see any value in playing a quasi-hexproof creature whose only upshot is that I can get rid of one creature per turn, which is just too slow. Also, he's wicked expensive for what he is imo.

This concludes my exploration of Grixis commanders
