Game day Hour of devistation —Aug. 17, 2017

Did not do very well at game day, I'll say that straight off. I still think my deck is very very good, and i know people are a little scared to go against me,

Match on vs zombie (1-2)

i sat down against the guy who won the previous days' game day. He was playing red that day, but said, "i'm playing a lower tier deck this time" he whips out a perfect mono black zombies deck. lower tier my ass!!

Anyway, first game he won, i just couldn't keep up with his stuff, it was close though. Game 2 i won pretty handily because he mulled to 5. Game three, i didn't draw my sweepers and he started first with 1 zombie on turn 1 and 2 zombies on two. I think i made mostly right decisions except i kept the dreamstealers in, and they should definitely be out in this matchup

Match 2 vs Blue Black control (2-0)

This match wasn't very tough. it was a homebrew by Xander and he didn't have much of a play until turn 3. Not many creatures, so sideboarding was easy against him. Not much to say except grasp kills everything, including a ammit eternal

match 3 grixis Control 2-0

He was running 2x Hour of devastation and 2x sweltering suns. Well sweltering suns doesn't do much against my deck, so really the only control decks i fear are the ones running very hard removal like hour of devastation(most of the time), Fumigate, Dusk / Dawn, Bontu's Last Reckoning. So, both games I eventually ate through his counterspells and then landed a 4/4 Dreamstealer and went to town.

Match 4 Jeskai control 1-2

This matchup was a bit harder than most control matchups. He's actually running decent creatures like Spell Queller and Archangel Avacyn  Flip. Great control deck actually, and definitely aimed for the creature-centric decks like mine. This matchup(all control matchups) gets way better for me in game 2. So i won that one by Doomfalling one of his big removal spells. and transgressing out his counterspells so my creatures could land.

Game one he swung in the air 4 times with lots of spell quellers and i couldn't really do much about them since fatal push misses them...unless i kill one of my creatures first...which i did when i had 3 fatal pushes in my hand!!!

Game 2 i got all his big bad threats out of his hand and he drew a lot of lands, which let me land a hydra, which gets there most of the time against control.

Game three

Another string of good spell quellers, along with a board wipe when i was getting out of control ended up letting him get down an uncontested gearhulk and smashing my face with 6 cards still left in hand at the end. RIP ME

Now i didn't think i would even make top 8 going 2-2, but i did and got the promo. I didn't think i'd do very well, since Jason (jeskai control) was the person who took 2nd and was the first one i'd have to go against. But i had a good idea of how to play the matchup better and it went a whole lot better the 2nd time. With a little luck of course

Quarter Finals- against jeskai control 2-0

game 1. This went so much differently than the first series. I landed a cub (won the die roll) and proceeded to smash face him down super low that his quellers and even his avacyn couldn't do anything. Cub won me that game by himself.

Game 2. A perfect curve by me and a slight land screw by him let me get down a snake and a nissa (rishkar was censored) but on turn 4 with him only on 2 mana, i felt very confident. His next 3 draws were land, which let him catch back up by spell quellering, most of my next things. but a 2/3 cannot block very well into a 4/5, even if you have two of them, so he had to just keep taking 2 turn after turn until he finally got a kill spell for my snake, but by then i also had a couple 4/5 plant tokens and a large ballista, so that was lights out.

Semi Finals -God Pharos gift 1-2

This is a strange matchup, because he's not exactly any type of deck, he's not an aggro deck, and he's not a control deck. I guess it's a midrange combo centric deck? The goal of his deck is to discard God-Pharaoh's Gift and then just cast Refurbish and proceed to win the game off random 4/4s that come from his graveyard. I put a couple Dispossess in my side, just in case i see it again.

game 1 i didn't really know what to expect and he landed his gift on turn 4 and proceeded to get value after value out of it. a 4/4 every single turn (he's chump blocked my creatures to stay high on life and get creatures in the grave) and he also has discarded cards thanks to Strategic Planning among other things.

Game 2 I had a good sideboard with him, and still good removal against him in Grasp of Darkness and Fatal Push and i also added in a few Transgress the Mind to exile his gifts if i saw one in hand.

Game 3 was a grindfest!!! We were both topdecking looking for good cards, i was getting lots of lands, including a lot of man lands, which was helping me whittle his life total down, little by little, 14 to 12 to 10 to 6 (could active 2 at this poing) and then he finds a string of amazing cards Angel of Invention into god pharos gift to bring back an angel from his graveyard....yep a 7/7 flying vigilance lifelinker and a 5/5 flying vigilance lifelinker. Welp i lose, good topdeck war!
