Trying to find the new balance —May 5, 2017

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet is just too good to sit in the sideboard. When play testing, I always sided him in. That tells me he should be in the main. I moved 2x Rabid Bite to the side.

To be completely honest, when run this at FNM tonight, I'll be running a 61 card deck because I'll probably add another land to get to 23.

I think the deck just needs a couple of extra creatures, and moving Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet will get it there. I know this will make the deck a bit less on the passively killing side, but the deck was definitely weaker with a bit fewer creatures.

The original concept of the current version was to pump small deathtouch creatures with Larger Than Life and Blossoming Defense to get damage through and to eliminate blocking creatures. There needs to be some hefty creatures (e.g., Rhonas the Indomitable, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet) to back up the strategy.

I'm trying to get back to the original strategy a bit because, well, it worked. Play testing last night and today confirm that this is indeed the better strategy. We'll see at FNM tonight...

Upvoted! I always love your decks dude. I based my R/B Vamps off of one of your builds earlier this year. Coincidentaly I started a B/G myself since Amonkhet came out. I would love some of your feedback on it. Gods, Zombies, Counters, and Tokens

kilthias, thanks for the upvote and for the compliment! A revision to this deck is coming very soon. I have finally had a chance to play test a bit more and I think I have a slightly better build for it by making a couple of small adjustments.

Bio,

Rabid Bite I feel was the perfect addition to this build. If you get a guy that just won't swing at you, then you force the issue and take his guy instead.

Also have you given any thought as too adding Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons? Her deathtouch snakes could be helpfull.

also, I find I get countered quite a bit. So I thought I might try Prowling Serpopard for a bit of protection. I took out the 2 Gonties to add them. Your thoughts on this move?

I can't wait to get my hands on Rhonas the Indomitable. He should be huge in this build, if you can get the 4/4 out. Personally I'm looking at Adding Lupine Prototype for this reason. True he isn't a part of this build, but he will set Rhonas free. And for a 2 drop I'm ok with it.

I just thought of this move, and it could be huge! How about adding 2 Odric, Lunarch Marshal. Then every creature will have first strike, deathtouch, indestructible, lifelink, and what ever else is on the field at the time. Adding 2 white mana wouldnt be that big a deal and Evolving Wilds is already there to pull them if needed.

Wolfees, thanks for the suggestions! I have looked at Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons and that is in the maybe board. At this point, I'm unsure. It's a good card, but I don't yet know how it might fit. I'm tinkering with it for now.

I haven't yet had the problem of my creatures being countered, but I also haven't competitively played the deck since early March. It's possible the meta has shifted at my local store, particularly with the release of Amonkhet. That's for the heads-up as I will be watching more carefully for that. For you, though, if you're running across that, that's a viable option, as well as maybe Warping Wail in the sideboard to counter their spells back at them (which would require getting a few colorless mana into the deck).

I'm looking forward to tinkering with Rhonas the Indomitable. I don't think it will be too difficult to activate him. Between his boost ability, Blossoming Defense, and Larger Than Life (and Clear Shot gives a small boost!) I'm hoping he'll be activated enough.

I'm not going to try to splash white. That seems way too complicated. I have built decks around Odric and the first strike/deathtouch combo, and they're pretty effective. The problem is that opponents learn this very quickly and eliminate Odric quickly. However, it's been a while since he's been around in decks, so you might be able to catch people off guard. Feel free to splash and see if it works-- I' be interested to know!

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Chris3778, that is a very interesting card. Thanks for pointing it out as I had not yet noticed that one! I saw the CMC and glossed by it without even reading it. Thanks!

Holy crap-- for Bone Picker it doesn't even look like it has to be one of my own creatures that died!! It could be an opponent's creature that dies. That card is getting better and better the more I look at it!
