Replaced a few cards —May 13, 2019

I was able to play a few games against a friend this past weekend. The deck performed significantly better in it's current state than it has in the past, although this could be attributed more to my ability to play the deck more so than the deck itself.

Of the three games I was able to play, this deck won 2 of them. In both cases, the deciding factors were being able to get out useful control lands, and winning through commander damage. In the first game, I was able to chain destroy and retrieve Child of Alara whenever I needed, and Diamond Valley kept me plenty high on life. In the second win, my only method of retrieving Child of Alara was using Mistveil Plains to allow me to send Child of Alara from my graveyard to command zone. Without being able to swing recklessly, this game was only won after I was able to use Tolaria West to transmute for Kessig Wolf Run and tap out to buff Child of Alara as large as I could to win from the trample commander damage.

Prahv, Spires of Order deserve a very special mention as the ability to prevent damage from ANY source protected me very well in these games. In the second game especially, I was always in range to losing instantly to a pumped up Debt to the Deathless. Prahv is the only card that can directly prevent this and any other non-combat damage.

Removed

Despite Nantuko Monastery's excellent 4/4 for 2 animate ability, I have never had 7 cards in my graveyard to enable it.

On paper, being able to consistently sacrifice for benefit sounds nice, but the one life gain isn't worth the cost of losing one mana, a new draw, and a new land drop.

Added

These cards all work well with the small collection of plains in the deck.

Kjeldoran Outpost is the most efficient token generator available to us, and it provides white permanents to enable Mistveil Plains.

Krosan Verge and Grasslans are both able to grab any plains or forest. This is useful mostly for fetching the plains to better rush Emeria, the Sky Ruin, but being able to grab Dryad Arbor gives these cards a little more value over any other fetch lands.

I love seeing originality like this. Big +1 from me.

This deck could really use Kjeldoran Outpost.

Arena might be another good addition just as a another sac outlet for against bigger creatures for Child of Alara? But its your call, could be used just for removal as well. Just a thought though. Fun Deck my dude!

Thank you!

Kjedoran Outpost is a tricky one since it also needs a to sacrifice a plains to work. I don't have it as an explicit rule, but I wanted to avoid putting any basic lands in the deck. I think that's why I originally looked over Kjedoran Outpost.

looking at it now, however, I do like the looks of a 2 cost token. I might try a few games with a plains and that card to see if it's worth abandoning the no basic lands guideline.

I'm thinking it probably won't mkae the grade, but I am desperate for a win so we'll see.

If you are still looking for ways around hexproof and it of course has to be a land Detection Tower might work. I only play Standard and some Modern so there could be other lands that do this ability better or cheaper.

itsbuzzi Thanks for this. It looks like Detection Tower and Arcane Lighthouse can get around hexproof. I think they should be in the deck. Now I need to find what to take out...

Oh it seems there is another card like Detection Tower. They are worded a bit different. If you need your opponents to lose hexproof as well it looks like detection tower is in. If shroud looks like Lighthouse. I do recall there is a distinction between making a creature lose hexproof as Lighthouse says it and just bypassing with Tower. Also noticed if the creature you are trying to target is like Boggles that doesn't have either shroud or hexproof it looks like you are still out of luck.
