Narwhal Discussion

Literally half of the whales in Magic have flying. No really, it's true. It's something I've known of for about two years now, and it looks like MaRo and the team have kept the tradition up!

Excluding Control Win Condition, as it's not an actual card, there are a grand total of SIX Whales in MTG, prior to Ikoria's release! They are:

Now! Ikoria (As of the posting of this thread) has Phase Dolphin (link), who sadly doesn't have flying...

But!! As if they knew, there is Heavenly Whale (link) in the Commander 2020 precon set who... yup :) has flying. ✓

So of the six Whales we have access to, plus the two officially spoiled new Whales (For a total of 8), literally 1/2 have flying.

And honestly, I love that they do goofy stuff like this.

Did you guys know there are only six Whales in the whole game, and literally HALF of them have or can gain flying??

Living Island

Legendary Creature

Whales you control have Vigilance.

Whenever Living Island or another Whale you control attacks, you may return a number of permanents to their owner's hands equal to the number of Whales you are attacking with.

You have no maximum handsize.

Catalog9000 I was curious and looked up the breaks you mentioned. In case anyone else is interested:

  • Only three Blue creatures naturally have First Strike--Illusionary Wall (Ice Age), Narwhal (Homelands), and Vodalian Knights (Fallen Empires). All other blue creatures either are multicoloured, or require some other condition (such as controlling a planes) to gain First Strike. It's been 13 years since we last had a Blue creature with First Strike, for good reason.

  • For green, it's a bit more common (though still less than 10 cards), but has not been seen since Mirrodin back in 2003.

Far-Seeker of Knowledge

Creature - Human Wizard

Far-Seeker of Knowledge has Haste as long as you control a Mountain.

Far-Seeker of Knowledge has First Strike as long as you control a Plains.

There's so much we can learn from other cultures that cannot be found by reading a book

Create another mono-coloured 1 drop that works better in a multi-coloured deck.

There are some blue creatures that have First Strike like these: Narwhal and Illusionary Wall. I think there are a few others.

Lighthouse Chronologist - if you're mono blue then could be very useful as it gets you a lower CMC creature that you can easily pump up to level 7 quick lol.

Cultural Exchange is neat and fits with your Commander's theme. Not as useful since you have a bunch of high CMC creatures but... Maybe add in token generators to get yourself some smaller stuff you can spit out. For example Spiny Starfish can give you blockers.

Narwhal is kinda pointless really. Same with Killer Whale.

Cryptoplasm is a favorite of mine that would fit in - if you can't crush their creature, and you can't take their creature, copy it :D
