two-color devotion for gods

Asked by Mrawesome1214 6 years ago

i am trying to build 5-color gods, but i can't figure out the devotion mechanic. like if i were to have Xenagos, God of Revels and Karametra, God of Harvests out at the save time. it would seem like the devotion would be 3 for each, because there is 2 green mana between them both and the the red and white mana on each one. but there is nothing confriming or denying this interaction.

700.5. A player’s devotion to [color] is equal to the number of mana symbols of that color among the mana costs of permanents that player controls. A player’s devotion to [color 1] and [color 2] is equal to the number of mana symbols among the mana costs of permanents that player controls that are [color 1], [color 2], or both colors.

What you are saying is correct, however, there are rules for it ;). I hope this is sufficient, if you need more help, please elaborate what part of the rule is unclear.

what are these rules? in particular is the god subtype a restriction?. or is it some thing to do with several devotions on the stack at the same time?

so i guess the part that is unclear is the gods devotion ability(s) going on the stack one after the other. like if i were to have Karametra, God of Harvests Xenagos, God of Revels athreos, god of passage Ephara, God of the Polis Iroas, God of Victory Keranos, God of Storms Kruphix, God of Horizons Mogis, God of Slaughter Pharika, God of Affliction and Phenax, God of Deceptionout at the same time, would all the devotion from their requirements activate all at the same time, cause between all of all of them they all have the required amount of mana symbols in both colors to have the gods become creatures at the same time. or am i correct with the previous answer?

So summarised:

- Devotion counts only mana symbols in your permanents' mana costs — the cost in the upper right corner of the card.
- Hybrid mana symbols, monocolored hybrid mana symbols, and Phyrexian mana symbols do count toward your devotion to their colors.
- Only colored mana symbols count; it doesn't matter how much a permanent costs to cast, just how much colored mana.
- If a God enters the battlefield, your devotion to its color (including the mana symbols in the mana cost of the God itself) will determine if a creature entered the battlefield or not, for abilities that trigger whenever a creature enters the battlefield.

Then you should know that devotion does not use the stack, it is simply checked at any possible point in the game as long as there is a permanent in play (or spell on the stack) with the devotion mechanic.
As to your new post, which i just caught, all your gods will be creatures and can do whatever creatures normally can at the same time. they are however, still also legendary enchantments, so a Merciless Eviction with the mode enchantments would exile them all, as would the mode creatures, since they are both types.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean by the god subtype being a restriction. There are permanents without the god subtype such as Gray Merchant of Asphodel which use the devotion mechanic. Any permanent (or spell such as Sanguimancy) with the devotion mechanic will work the same. It is just that the better cards are the legendary enchantment creature cards with a God subtype.
Any permanent in play under your control will count towards the devotion of that colour. i.e. If you control 3 Beetleback Chief and a Purphoros, God of the Forge you will have a devotion of 7 and purphoros will be a creature. If you then cast a Xenagos, God of Revels and it resolves, Purphoros will see a creature enter the battlefield and trigger, because your devotion to red and green is also 7 at the point of Xenagos entering the battlefield, even though your devotion will be 9 (8 Red and 1 Green) right after that thanks to Xenagos' mana symbols.
If you would however only have 2 beetlebacks and a purhoros, your devotion would be 5 towards and Xenagos would not trigger purhoros, even though it's a creature immidiately after it enters the battlefield and you would then have a devotion of 7 towards Red and Green.

i Might be mistaken but the way i understand Devotion is. X Land + Y Land must =7 or more.

So for example Xenagos, God of Revels needs Mountain's and Forests. Karametra, God of Harvests needs Forests and Plains.

To have both active you would need one of the following amount of energy:

 1. 6 Mountains 1 Forest 6 Plains

 2. 5 Mountains 2 Forests 5 Plains

 3. 4 Mountains 3 Forests 4 Plains

 4. 3 Mountains 4 Forests 3 Plains

 5. 2 Mountains 5 Forests 2 Plains

 6. 1 Mountain 6 Forests 1 Plain

No.4 is probably the cheapest amount of energy needed.

Though i always had a question on the same topic regarding double land cards such as Blossoming Sands. Does it count as 1 for either or 1 for each at the same time? What i mean is does it count towards 1 Devotion of Forest or Plain. OR 1 Devotion of Forest and 1 Devotion of Plain?

you're welcome ;).

You seem to be a bit new on the topic of triggers, static abilites and mechanics and how to differentiate them. You might want to read something about it, or speak with a more experienced player in your local play store or play group to get more clarifications. Your deck idea seems fun, so go at it!

as far as doing it on your own, you could try and read a few of these rules

Whether or not a God is a creature when it enters, for the purposes of triggering abilities, you consider it's own mana symbols. Even if you controlled only 2 Beetleback Chiefs and Purphoros, God of the Forge, Purphoros would still trigger off of a Xenagos, God of Revels entering the battlefield. There is no point at which it is on the battlefield and not a creature in that scenario.

Devotion to 5 colors isn't really a thing. Your devotion to a color is a numerical number, not an on/off state. Only the 2 color Gods actually ask what your devotion to more than just one color is, and again, they're asking what your devotion is, not whether or not you have devotion. In theory, your devotion to all 5 colors would just be the number of colored mana symbols among permanents you control, but as no card asks for that, it doesn't really matter.

a right, i was confused with replacement effects (and a trigger from purphoros) for a bit. Thanks for catching that.
