Why is Thing in the Ice  Flip so popular?

Standard forum

I've seen this card in lots of decks, and even seen decks built around it, but don't know why it's so popular.

Does it work really well in a dedicated Control deck?

Every time I see it hit the field I get rid of it ASAP. Is that part of the strategy?

The chance for a 7/6 pseudoDevastation Tide for 1U is too good to pass up. In standard it's not quite as good, in my opinion, as it is in other formats like Modern and Legacy. I think the draw there for this card is that there are plenty of decks that run potent spells with a 1cmc that can run Thing in the Ice  Flip. It dodges Lightning Bolt, which is a huge test for a card to be played in Modern. In standard it's hard not to pass up, but definitely not as potent of a threat.

It's also worth noting that it's price is sighted on a downward trend.

it's a 2-mana blue card, of course there's hype about it.

I saw a guy in a Twitch chat trying to say that Thing in the Ice  Flip would only be good in Modern in Storm. After saying he played it 100 times in the past month. I had to hold back on how wrong he was.

He played it, or he played against decks that ran it?

I feel like the best deck it would fit into is an aggro Delver build in Modern. If Monastery Swiftspear were still around there might have been a home for it in a prowess deck in Standard.

The 'hype' is based on analysisng all the things the card could possibly do.

2-Drop 0/4 blocker... not completely horrible.
1-Sided board wipe... very good.
'Timeable' board wipe that can be triggered at instant speed when needed... better.
7/8 win-con... very good 'must-answer' threat.

The realization now is that it is a much more 'play-around me' card than originally thought. - There certainly are decks for it, but it's really not a 'throw me in any deck' card... not like Westvale Abbey  Flip is looking like. So long as you use a decent number of creatures and the won't interfere with your mana too much, it should be in your deck.

Why are you talking about colourless mana?

Not to be rude, but reading Rayenous's post in its entirety will yield you the answer.

Thing in the Ice  Flip can potentially be flipped turn 4, board wipe (except horrors) swing for 7. I'm using it in my U/R burn control for standard. Check it out if you want You have a fever and the only cure is more Izzet

You all are thinking to small...in modern you must Simian Spirit Guide + blue source + 4 Gitaxian Probe or Gut Shot for a turn one 7/8 hahaha

The way I think about it I would rather somebody use removal on something that cost me 2 mana than other things later in the game

Rayenous, are you proposing Westvale Abbey  Flip for any standard deck that can run it or every deck every format? I want to find a home in my modern deck

I'm not really saying 'any deck'... just that there's a lot more decks for it than Thing.

In Standard, I would expect 2 or more in most creature heavy decks, so long as adding those 2 non-color producing land won't cause mana issues. - It's great for putting an end to board stalls, responding to board wipes, or just an alternate win-con. (But, be weary of possible exile/bounce effects.)

Outside Standard the deck really needs to call for it. There are often other utility land that may be better than it. - I can see running 1-2 in Tokens and possibly Soul Sisters. And a slight possibility as a one-of in some type of Abzan deck (though this is where mana color may become an issue), as it has things like reoccurring Kitchen Finks and Voice of Resurgence, etc.

I am currently testing it in my Soul Sisters deck. No definitive result yet. You said it best as a board wipe response it seems so far

Nobilior don't worry about being rude.

It's what you expect when you dare to ask a question for clarification on TappedOut.

omnipotato, not that Village Messenger  Flip is anywhere near as good as Monastery Swiftspear, but with a red one drop with haste do you feel that deck still has a shot at being a thing? I mean...the Messenger actually works against the prowess deck, but it's the best current T1 move

You can't make Village Messenger  Flip tall like you could Monastery Swiftspear.

The loss of Temur Battle Rage is also a huge blow to Prowess decks.

They aren't all together dead, but I think that something like Lightning Berserker works better as their 1 drop.

JUST MY OPINION.

I can see Lightning Beserker as a good prowess deck 1 drop. Village Messenger  Flip is only good every other turn of you want the menace bonus.
