With Madness coming back...

Modern forum

So I read this article that showed this sick deck here. Super cool idea, love that you can really power out a Mentor and keep it (somewhat) safe. Yes, there are obvious cards that really hurt, but who cares, fun deck looks fun.

ANYWAYS, this got me searching for more cost spells to see what else the deck could abuse. In my search I came across Wheel of Fate. It's currently sitting at $3. Here is my question.

Is there room for this in modern? A sweet madness deck would be fun. Maybe even Grixis. I don't know, I'm thinking outside the box. I don't have a deck list yet, but I'm going to brew.

Maybe a deck that deals damage for having 3+ cards in your hand. Fevered Visions?

TL;DR Madness is back and seems stronger than before. Wheel of Fate is cheap. Draw 7 on T5 seems strong, even if your opponent draws too.

EDIT: I came up with this insane deck. Probably unplayable but I had fun putting it together. Need to trim to 60 cards...lol

Okay, so that first deck looks hilarious. I'd totally play it.

Wheel of Fate however, is way too slow to see play. The earliest you can draw your cards is turn 6, which by then, it's already far too late for it to mean anything.

Scouty Oh, it definitely would not be competitive. It's really just a silly deck, but who knows. Maybe in a lock-out deck it could work. Below is the deck I want to try. Turn 3 Fevered Visions seems fun.

Oh, as a silly deck, fuck yes. That'd be hilarious to play with. Don't forget your Waste Nots for value

R/B Madness is pretty cool, but I normally find Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded to be the best way to enable madness. Plus you can run other cards like Heir of Falkenrath  Flip that are great with madness.

Wheel of Fate seems like it may work better in a janky Possibility Storm kind of brew. Cast a sorcery, draw seven cards, make more mana, cast more things, eventually Grapeshot or some other big play.

Well if you cascade into it it may not be as janky.

Just a little correction: Wheel of Fate doesn't cost . It has no cost. That means you can't pay flashback costs for it, among other things.

And here are a few tips for your deck:

  • Play Howling Mine. There's a reason this deck was called "Owling Mine" back in the Kamigawa days.

  • I suggest running a single copy of Reliquary Tower for times when your hand goes past seven.

  • If you can, definitely add a playset of Simian Spirit Guides to your 60. The mana acceleration it provides is insane. If you can't get SSGs, some mana rocks could be useful (Rakdos Signet, Talisman of Dominance and the like), not only for the mana fixing, but to help triggering metalcraft for Molten Psyche.

  • I know it's supposed to be a janky casual deck, but have some interaction! Hand disruption, removal, the mandatory 4 copies of Lightning Bolt, maybe some counterspells and bounce spells (what are you gonna do if you run into Leyline of Sanctity?).

  • There's currently waaaaay too many Gaze of Adamaro-type spells in your deck, and they all cost upwards of 3 mana. You can cut down on some of those, as well as Quicken, which is basically just taking up deck space (your deck runs 21 lands, so you'll often not have enough mana for casting, say, Day's Undoing + Quicken on the same turn. Up that land count, by the way!).

Hope this helps.

square711 Thanks! I will definitely make some changes. I know it doesn't have a mana cost, but the site I was using it came up when I searched for 0 cost spells. You can play it in the grave with Goblin Dark Dwellers though, so that's kind of cool. I think I will go BR now.
