Question about Merfolk
Legacy forum

So I'm thinking about building Merfolk as my first competitive deck in Legacy, and I've been looking over some lists, and have found some run Ponder and some don't. Wondering if I should use it or not, or if I want to play Brainstorm instead or something.

Standstill
is a great card for merfolk. If you have an AEther Vial
you can drop a creature and cast it.

Gush would be awesome if it was legal. But sadly, too OP, I'll probably make the list in the next day or so and post it. and AEther Vial is a 4-of.

I'm putting a merfolk list together and need a little input on my mana. I have sets of Cavern of Souls
and Mutavault
but am wondering if all basic Island
is supperior to say 6xIsland
and 4xFlooded Strand
. I use fetch lands in my burn deck for the deck thinning and Grim Lavamancer
food. 1 Life isnt that much to gve u in faster decks like burn but my be more significant in the longer games i get with this style of control deck.

If you have the fetches, play them and run Brainstorm . It basically means you have Ancestral Recall in your deck, at the cost of one life. Fetch lands still play around Wasteland , so that's not even an issue.
However, most Merfolk decks skip out on the cantrips. You want as many lords as possible, along with the staple Cursecatcher s, Silvergill Adept s, and True-Name Nemesis s.

Brainstorm is worthless without fetches. Do not consider running it, run all islands and 4 Mutavault to escape the wasteland. Ponder is the best choice for cantrip, since it looks the deepest, but everything depends on your build. make sure to post it on the site to get some advice.
