wouldn't Evolving Wilds be much better? Or am I missing something?

What YouGotFranked said. Not coming in tapped is pretty good. Though since Flood Plain itself enters tapped, the net result is really the same.

The bigger difference is really in the lands that it can fetch. Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds can only fetch basic lands. Flood Plain can fetch you lands like Hallowed Fountain , Steam Vents , or Godless Shrine since those lands have Plains or Island in their land types. (You could also fetch Alpha duals like Volcanic Island , if you happen to have them).

Also, bear in mind the set they were released in. Mirage was the first set to really design cards specifically for tournament play. The Mirage fetchland cycle was designed to let competitive decks tutor for the Alpha-Beta duel lands, which helped lower the odds of multicolor decks being colorscrewed at tournaments. One of the top decks back then was Keeper, which was 5 colors back then, so colorscrew was a major point of concern.

Unfortunately, the Mirage lands proved underpowered, and players preferred using Barbed Sextant for color fixing and card advantage. Then wizards made the Onslaught fetchland cycle (and later the Zendikar fetchlands as well) to be better.

Excellent points and I concur. With Arid Mesa I can tutor a Stomping Ground , Steam Vents , Volcanic Island , Taiga , etc. Much better than Evolving Wilds . BTW, Farseek > Rampant Growth for the same reason.

In amono green ramp deck like are so common (sarcasm alert) then farseek is not as good. However, these decks do have their place in standard and so Farseek might not be the optimal choice. In most cases, though, I agree with you.

If you're like most people, and don't have boatloads of money to spend so you can stuff all your decks with shock lands and alpha duals, then Rampant Growth is better than Farseek because most of your decks are probably filled with basic lands anyhow.

@cartwheelnurd, obviously yes, then Rampant Growth would suit a mono green deck lol.

@MagnorCriol Consider the context of what my comment concerning Farseek is. If one were wishing to fetch Stomping Ground , Steam Vents , Hallowed Fountain , Temple Garden etc, then yes, Farseek is much better than Rampant Growth . If you're not running those cards (which have all been reprinted or will be reprinted), than Evolving Wilds will do the trick for the basic lands, I suppose.

$10-15 per shock land is much more affordable than $50-200 for the Alpha-Unlimited duals.

Yeah, the RtR reprint has made Shockland prices plummet (precisely why they reprinted them, of course), and I'm sure they'll only drop more.

And also, yeah, I'm sorry if I came off sounding curt or something - rereading my comment I sort of get that vibe, and that was unintended. Farseek can certainly fix your mana like no one's business if you have any of the duals or shocks in there, that's for damn sure. I guess my point was only that Farseek isn't better than Rampant Growth , exactly, since they're really for different jobs - Seek can fix your mana and fetch you some multi-type lands, while Rampant is more baseline, and equally applicable as Seek for your general player.

It's cool man. I appreciate your apology.

Well as pointed out earlier if you're running a mono colored deck and wanting ramp, than yes, Rampant Growth would do the job. Otherwise, I'd personally like to take advantage of Farseek 's ability to fetch a dual land in a multi-colored deck. Now, if I was playing a Modern Wolf Run Ramp deck, I'd use both :-) Plus Solemn Simulacrum , Viridian Emissary , etc.
