Vampire Nighthawk is rare and that's that.

Is it only me that thinks that Vampire Nighthawk should either be a rare or at least cost one more mana? You are paying 3 mana for a 2/3 flyer. (already good). PLUS it has deathtouch AND lifelink. I know this card came out a while ago, but to this day it bugs me that he is only uncommon. I compare him to Fiendslayer Paladin who is rare. Any thoughts?

If you try and change my precious into a rare, I will have to cut you. All jokes/threats aside, no, I don't think he really see him as a rare because he's still very open to removal. Lightning Bolt , Searing Spear , Terminate , Murder , Smite , Pacifism . There really are a lot of answers to it. I've always run it to be a support card at first that transfers to being my heavy hitter. Because playing Stromkirk Captain the turn after makes for a very good blocker while you set up your field.

It's not THAT good of a card. It's seriously an over rated card.

I love nighthawk as well. I suppose you're right about the removal haha. Still though, he definitely stands out from all of the other uncommons.

It's not really a game-changing card but it's definitely high value at the price of an uncommon. But we're discussing the logic of WotC here. Considering Dismiss into Dream is a rare, I think we could pass off Liliana of the Veil as a common. I'm sure we can fit Vampire Nighthawk somewhere in between.

I don't know about you but Dismiss into Dream in my opinion cost's a but too much mana. But I don't think I am quite following your point here.

Well, rarity has a lot to do with limited play too. You don't want a whole bunch of Dismiss into Dream floating around limited environments, but you do want more Nighthawks.

@ItchiUchiha117 The "It dies to removal" argument is useless as there's only one card (that I know of) that doesn't.

Cheap?... CheckAggressive?... CheckEvasive?... CheckSolid tribe?... CheckGreat blocker?... Check

The only downside to this card is the double black in his casting cost so yeah it probably should be a rare

And now that I've looked even that one creature dies to activated abilities

August 31, 2013 2:16 a.m.

There... There are a lot of cards that are immune to a lot of removal. Hexproof with regeneration is a damn good way to achieve that, for instance. But what I'm saying is that, yes, it's a good card, but it's easily answered. You've spent 3 mana on your creature, I spend 2 mana to kill it with Searing Spear or Essence Scatter it away. It's a very solid creature with some great abilities. Why make it harder to get?

By the way, which creature were you referring to?

Dismiss into Dream is a terrible unplayable card...

Norin the Wary , he's absolutely hilarious. I'm not saying I'd rather see him as a rare just that he's solid enough to be a rare and deserve the rank.

Again though the removal/counter theory is a pointless argument to use against him deserving to be a rare

I don't think he's underrated or overrated. I think Nighthawk is rated.

Nighthawk is a good card, period...... He could cost 1 more and still you would get alot of value for your mana. He's better than alot of rare and mythic rares in most deck. He pass the "bear test" with A+.....

Now for it's rarity, he's good at uncommon, you do want to see him often in limited. He's not a bomb and should not be The rare when you opten your precious pack. It's just an awsome 3 drop....

It could cost 1 more mana but i think this would have to make him a 2/4 or a 3/3... So he could still be an awsome card.

To the dies to removal argument...... Kalonian Hydra dies to removal..... Still is a 30$ mythic rare..... Tarmogoyf also dies to alot of removal....

Vampire Nighthawk is super efficient and effective in that 3-mana slot, but not a game "finisher" and not likely to affect the overall flow of the game outside of enticing your opponent to hold aggro back or drawing removal away from finishers and core strategy cards.

All of this makes for a good card, but not necessarily a rare card.

@RickyHoeppner, my point is that we have effective cards like Vampire Nighthawk in an uncommon slot while a fair share of mythic rares and a ton of rares have very little playable value in competitive formats. You know, like how Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded is heads and shoulders above other planeswalkers. He totally deserves that mythic slot.

We've come a long way from the days when Sinkhole and Dark Ritual and Chain Lightning were being printed as commons but we've still got some borderline great commons and uncommons, and some rares that deserve a good spot in a 60 card trash heap. Yet no matter what card we think is overpowered or not, we still buy them.

August 31, 2013 4:05 p.m.

@emrakool, Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded , is not a good planeswalker, he was bad in standard, and he will never be good in modern, he just got attention because he's a 2 drop planeswaker and he was new

I'm pretty sure emrakool was being sarcastic.

Still, not every mythic needs to be amazing, just like not every C/U card needs to be booster pack fodder. A lot of things go into what rarity cards are put at: how often they should show up in a limited format, how many you want the average player to have, obviously powerlevel, etc. It's not a thing that's set in stone; Serra Angel has been printed at both uncommon and rare multiple times. It's possible we will see Nighthawk again in a later set at Rare.
