Scars of Mirrodin Speculation

So I was talking to some judges and you heard it here first:
- Poison counters are back
- Elspeth may get reprinted (recent rule change for her final ability specifically - puts an indestructibility emblem into play in its own zone that cannot be targeted or effected by cards)
- Poison counters also go in the same area as the emblem
Personally: - Hoping for a new Tez! - Thinking Steel Overseer will go up in price!
mwahaha! Geth, Lord of the Vault + Training Grounds .
I have to believe that there will be lots of red, white, and green instant-speed artifact hate, just to keep the myr deck from being completely ridiculous.

I am waiting to see more Metalcraft and with what I could see on the wizards site there is going to be a cycle of artificers and a new land destruction spell. What the details are i have no clue and I am not going to make any assumptions.

Rusty Relic - 4
Artifact
Metalcraft - Rust Relic becomes a 5/5 artifact creature as long as you control 3 or more artifacts.
you were saying, Qysas? lol
September 8, 2010 7:15 p.m.
Zylo,
I just saw that on the wizards site, or well in name only. Where did you find it? LOL
I still think I am going to make a Metal Crafters deck for sure.

are you sure rusty relic is real it looks fake with it being a picture of a car and all i dont know it kinda takes the fantasy out of it when your playing "my dad's old bug"

Gatheringmagic usually puts in fake images when just the text of a card is spoiled. Usually they're very good about only showing REAL spoilers.
September 8, 2010 7:38 p.m.
I'm so pumped about all these myrs. They've always gotten love, but now they seem like they might have their own legitimate tribal deck now. :)
September 8, 2010 8:41 p.m.
Oh my lord, I heart Koth so hard. a playable red planeswalker. let's build this guy a summer home. Say perhaps on the slopes of Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle ?
September 9, 2010 5 a.m.
Also, it's awesome that his name is a recurring acronym.

KOTH = Koth of the Hammer
Koth of the Hammer = Koth of the Hammer of the Hammer
Koth of the Hammer of the Hammer = Koth of the Hammer of the Hammer of the Hammer
I like it lol.
September 9, 2010 5:24 a.m.
I'm glad Geth finally gets a card. Sure, it's after he had his head removed, but as he said, he's still the best damned necromancer on Mirrodin. Of course, if the Phyrexians are invading Mirrodin, then he might get bumped down a few pegs.
September 9, 2010 7:34 a.m.
KOTH is so a RDW MUST HAVE. He is just awesome. Finally a GREAT Red Planeswalker.
September 9, 2010 9:33 a.m.
I'm glad there's finally a good red planeswalker that can be used in just about every red deck instead of just burn decks. I never really liked Chandra...
September 9, 2010 12:29 p.m.
Liege of the Tangle (Mythic) 6GG 8/8 trample whenever liege of the tangle deals combat damage to a player, you may choose any number of target lands you control and put an awakening counter on each of them. each of those lands is an 8/8 green elemental creature for as long as it has an awakening counter on it. theyre still lands.
September 9, 2010 2:42 p.m.
any one else think that this is the Avenger of Zendikar 's new best friend turbo land may be another top contender for standard meta reacuring decks. my list so far, pyromancy ascension turbo land blue white control planeswalker control maybe dredgevine.
jund and mythic are gone.
September 9, 2010 3:44 p.m.
Engulfing Slagwurm - 5GG
Creature - Wurm
Whenever Engulfing slagwurm blocks or becomes blocked by a creature, destroy that creature. You gain life equal to that creature's toughness.
7/7

This is definately going to be a VERY interesting limited format...
September 9, 2010 5:14 p.m.
honestly, if they reprint Shatterstorm or some other mass artifact hate (and they sort of have to -- otherwise these myr / artifact decks are just going to be out of hand), I think there could be a playable blue / red control deck in limited formats. We'll have to see what commons and uncommons are in the set, though -- they could change everything.
Actually, I think I'm going to go buy a full set of Tuktuk Scrapper s.
September 9, 2010 5:27 p.m.
I think that at least 2 colors are going to have to have some sort of mass artifact hate. Back in Mirrodin, vial affinity was tough enough to be able to win after eating 1 (or more!) Shatterstorm , and with the insane draw power in the current standard, I can easily imagine that some sort of artifact aggro can do the same thing. Tuktuk Scrapper ...yes. WUR allies with the broken white stuff, crazy fixing, and Venser? badump tissssh
September 9, 2010 5:52 p.m.
After checking the Orb of Insight, it is for sure that we will not be seeing Karn, or any other additional planeswalkers. For funsies, though, here are some words and their frequency:
Indestructible- 5 Imprint- 5 Flash- 2 (could be a card title or the ability) Angel- 4 Demon- 4 (Probably two angels, two Demons) Dragon- 7 (Two of the three dragons have been spoiled already) Myr- 41 Octopus- 0
September 9, 2010 6:32 p.m.
bobmarchman says... #25
I'll add to the Orb of Insight goodness: Legendary - 6 (we've seen 4 already by my count), Metalcraft - 22, Infect - 22, Proliferate - 7
mmm...proliferate...
September 9, 2010 7:05 p.m.
ThaXecutioner says... #26
Orb of Insight results:
"Vampire" - 1
"Vampires" - 2
--Maybe a Vampire that hands out 2 different boosts to fellow Vampires? There was a rumor that Vampire Nocturnus would get a nice replacement.
"Deathtouch" - 3, "Lifelink" - 4, "First" - 4, "Double" - 3, "Strike" - 8, "Flying" - 31, "Trample" - 7, "Intimidate" - 4, "Haste" - 10

More Orb of Insight:
Shroud - 1
Glimmerpost - 2
Zombie - 6
Copy - 5
Destroy - 24
Wurm - 5
Equip - 15
September 9, 2010 7:15 p.m.
locus - 2. Break out your cloudposts, kids - big mana is back, and we ain't happy.
tezzeret - 0. Everybody's favourite artifact-relevant planeswalker is most likely pulling a Jace. On planeswalkers...
planeswalker - 3. We got em all, then.
exile - 14. Well, 5 are imprint. so there's probably only a couple that are removal.
maelstrom - 0. Apparently the gods of Magic don't want me to play Rock with that bit of nastiness in it.
instant - 27. Isn't that a bit low for a large set? I mean, 5 per colour and 2 for multicolour...Zen had 36, Lorwyn had 31, ROE had 30, Rav had 45, Mirrodin had 34. Plus 2 might be flash.
sorcery - 15. Whattttttt. Zen, 19, Lorwyn 22, ROE 33(!), Rav 29, Mirrodin 19.
artifact - 144. Yeah, it's an artifact set.
land - 37. So, 20 are basics...that leaves a lot of stuff, even with some searching.
enchantment - 16. At least 1 of which is probly removal.
creature - 260. HOLY.
nonbasic - 0. ?!?
September 9, 2010 8:15 p.m.
what is this orb of insight business?
also: the increased creature : (instant + sorcery) ratio makes sense -- the developers have talked about trying to slow the game down some, after the constant turn 5 / 6 wins of recent sets.
and sporkife: nonbasic lands don't have the word 'nonbasic' on the card anywhere. that's why they don't show up in the search. there are clearly 17 nonbasic lands, if there are 37 total, right? 2 are locuses, so that leaves 15 new and interesting places to worry about.
Are any of y'all going to be at Grand Prix Portland?

Where ROE could be referred to as a Timmy's wet dream, Scars will be a Johnny's, me thinks. Lots of really interesting tech so far in the spoilers (plus Koth, drooool). I still think it's a little early to say if the format will be broken in anyway, though. I predict a slower Standard format, actually. It seems that for every way you can find to just smash or combo through early, Wizards has devised more than a couple of answers for each.
As for the Palladium/Galvanizer infinite mana combo, while viable as a casual combo, I just don't see it being stable enough to be a threat in Standard. The only thing that is of concern to me at this point are artifact lands. But, I have to speculate, given how attentive Wizards has been of late to overall set and format balance and avoiding broken cards, that if we see new artifact lands, there will be something put in place to restrict them and prevent mass breakage. I hope. I really really hope. Sure, turn 1 or 2 combo kills are fun...but not for everyone else :-)
September 9, 2010 8:45 p.m.
I think Scars, is going to be loads of fun, I mean a turn 1 4/4 Highly unlikely but possible as well as a turn 3 8/8 Trample. Although the combo is not perfect. It is possible and not broken.

Orb of Insight Key word "Regenerate"= 6,
I wonder what color or what way this will happen.
September 9, 2010 9:03 p.m.
so, no affinity, guys -- orb of insight says affinity = 0
some other interesting results:
swampwalk - 1 was the only landwalk shatter - 1 sword - 1 -- so sword of mind and body is part of a new sword cycle -- at least not in this set.
goblin - 9 elf - 8 merfolk - 0 (but serpent 3) soldier - 6 knight - 1 zombie - 6
and here's an interesting datum: the number 12 appears once in the set. There's something big we haven't seen yet. there are also between 3 and 6 of each of the mirran 'tribes', neurok, sylvok, moriok, etc.

venser and myr battlesphere are gonna be best freinds in myr decks cant for the artifact destroy
September 10, 2010 12:56 a.m.
@landot: i know, I'm disappointed that there's no nonbasic land search. There will, however, almost certainly be some form of land search, so I'm figuring on maybe 12 nonbasics.
How do more creatures slow the game down? repeatable damage. unless you just make em all crappy and/or expensive...
@banchs: like i said, he's pulling a Jace.
September 10, 2010 10:37 a.m.
Have you seen Prototype Portal yet? That card is just nuts!

I'm eagerly awaiting the reveal of Bleak Coven Vampires. Standard Vamps are going to need a little more than this new Exsanguinate to fit the bill for post-rotation:
Exsanguinate - (X)BB
Sorcery
Each opponent loses X life. You gain life equal to the life lost this way.
September 10, 2010 3:19 p.m.
does anyone else look at Myr Battlesphere and immediately think of Katamari Damacy?
September 10, 2010 5:38 p.m.
vox_of_jeebus says... #41
landot hahahaha yes and no cus i also see that venser and battlesphere are going to make myr decks even more scary
September 10, 2010 5:48 p.m.
@ cardcoin
that card's gonna be scary with venser and myr battlesphere. probably also with elspeth's new ultimate. actually its gonna be scary with any artifact creatures out there. imagine putting out darksteel colossi every turn? (or something similar to darksteel colossus). thats crazy.
September 10, 2010 6 p.m.
oh with platinum emperium you could essentially lock down the game for as long as you want without losing card advantage. as i said, crazy
September 10, 2010 6:01 p.m.
With what has been shown so far what do you think is the Top 10 so far?
September 12, 2010 11:41 a.m.
- Prototype Portal ... It's just so interesting! What artifact should I copy and win with today?
- Throne of Geth ... You can even sacrifice it to proliferate for 2 mana... I see this being another one of those 1st pick draft cards. For standard... now thats slightly different nut to crack :)
- thrumming-bird... 1/1 flyer with proliferate if it manages to deal damage?
- Grand Architect . - Grand Blue card for mana exel... A lot of folk will be trying to figure out the best way to bust him...
- Engulfing Slagwurm - Pure deathtouch with added lifelink awesomness. Now all we need is an artifact equipment to let us draw cards and we win! :)
- Memnite - AWESOME!
- Clone Shell - Want a massive creature in play... this is the bloke to do it.
- Goblin Gaveleer - Red to this date hasn't gotten much spoilers... but this is gonna be interesting. and this goblin doesn't need much more of a boost to prove it!
- card:Ezuri's Brigade - Green got an awesome creature for 4 mana... For sealed this is a bomb draft pick.
- Mox Opal - Yes, it's legendary, and yes it's gonna be a pain cause it has metalwork stuck on it... but think about it this way... Oh impossible will it be to get this operational on the 1st turn when you have 2 different 0 drop creatures... ALONE.

Green? Red cards haven't gotten any respect thus far; a single goblin that gets a bonus and trample to being equipped? not exactly RDW type stuff.
