Feedback Requested: Syr Gwyn, Mardu Knights EDH Deck

Hello all,

This is my first deck posted on Tapped so hopefully I'm doing this properly.

Looking for some feedback on my Syr Gwyn, Mardu Knights EDH deck.

Link to deck: Syr Gwyn, Mardu Knights Deck list

Theme of the deck:

Take a blended approach on tribal Knights and Syr Gwyn's Equip perk to smash face.

Where I am struggling:

  • Is the creature to equipment ratio sufficient? Aka should I either reduce artifacts and increase the creature count?
  • Are there any creatures you find lacking value and should be replaced with something else?
  • Is the land base sufficient? I have heard that 40% of an EDH deck should be land with 10% being mana rocks (I believe this is from Saffron Olive on MTG Goldfish).

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

-Canamex

I would replace Knight of the Ebon Legion with Taurean Mauler . It's a better knight that pumps up faster.

I don't think the cluestones are that great to be honest. I'd scrap them for Dragon Breath so your commander always has haste and fire-breathing, Infiltration Lens which is good for menace commanders because if you get double blocked you draw 4 cards, and lastly Mind Stone since your color fixing seems good enough as is.

I think all else is fine for what you are concerned about.

Thanks for the information StopShot.

Taurean Mauler looks pretty sweet. Is there a basis of how many creatures I should have at each CMC level? I realize that it depends on the deck.

I'm just trying to understand if running a low amount of 1 CMC creatures would cause an issue recovering from something like a board wipe.

@Canamex Not really. The only issue where it hurts not to have low CMC creatures is if they remove all your land and creatures at the same time. Like with Jokulhaups , but this rarely happens and usually your opponents will be in the same boat with you.

1 CMC creatures I'd only run if they're ridiculously impressive or have an effect that can't be gotten from a bigger creature. For example I wouldn't run Dauntless Bodyguard , because if you play them first they're practically a 2/1 with nothing special about them. Instead I'd run Changeling Outcast over him as you would have an unblockable knight you could dump all your equipment on. If the indestructibility really matters to you I'd run Kindred Boon instead, but that might be a better card to swap out over Knights' Charge . The indestructibility would make it harder to wipe your creatures off the board after all.

The only 1 mana knights I'd run in your deck are Fervent Champion , Changeling Outcast and maybe Student of Warfare if you're feeling really good about your color fixing.

Got it @StopShot. That makes sense.

I am actually thinking now of swapping out Knight of the Ebon Legion and Dauntless Bodyguard for Mother of Runes and Giver of Runes to help with some protection for Gwyn as she’ll be a target often.

Also, thoughts on Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor somewhere in the deck?

@Canamex Those 1-drop creatures are good. Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor also seems like a solid inclusion too. Haakon, Stromgald Scourge would also make a very good inclusion however you'd need to find a way to put him into your graveyard before you can reap value off of him.

might I suggest adding a Aurelia, the Warleader ? I know she's not a knight, but she can end a game just by coming onto the battlefield.
