Sideboard

This is the first deck that I ever deck I ever made that had an actual gameplan and wasn't just a bunch of cards that seemed powerful. This was around 1997 as I remember my super secret tech was the card Fatal Blow . The idea of the deck was simple:

  1. Get out a Pestilence
  2. Get out a creature
  3. Kill all but your creatures with pestilence
  4. Beat down with your creatures to make sure they take more damage than you do

Notes:

  • Pestilence was great for combat, I remembering trading my 1/1's for much bigger creatures; specifically, I remember trading Duskrider Falcon for quite a few Serra Angel s.

  • Somewhere along the line, I realized that Withering Wisps is a better pestilence if I replaced all my swamps with snow-covered swamps. So I did.
  • The deck has some life gain in the form of Spirit Link and Drain Life to mitigate the damage taken from pestilence. Dark Ritual is to power out Drain Life. S
  • Fatal Blow allowed me to kill any creature for and Death Pits of Rath allowed me to kill ALL my opponent's creatures with a single activation of pestilence/withering wisps!!
  • Spirit of the Night was my super beatdown card.
  • Takklemaggot is/was jank but it was my favorite card in the whole deck regardless. It slowly kills creatures, it's flavorful and I could use a death metal voice when I brought it into play. Win/Win.
