2-Headed Giant FNM —June 28, 2014

Hey guys, sorry for the late update, but last Friday's FNM went FANTASTIC!!!

It was 2HG FNM last week, so for those of you who don't know what that is- 2HG is a 2 v. 2 format of magic. Two big differences are that there is 30 life per team and you only play 1 game a round, so you also can't sideboard.

My partner, Chris, was using a mono-red burn/devotion deck, which really helped to protect us early-game.

-

Round #1: Win

We played a team made up of a G/B Ramp & removal deck and a mono blue devotion deck. Early game I had out an Underworld Coinsmith enchanted with a Ethereal Armor and a Gift of Orzhova. They finally removed it with a Hero's Downfall, but Chris dealt the last 5 damage with his Fanatic of Mogis and a Lightning Strike.

-

Round #2: Win

This match was really close! Chris and I were playing a Boros enchantment deck and another B/W Enchantment deck that was similar to mine, but had more than 100 cards. The real hurt came from the Boros deck when he put 4+ enchantments on a Hero of Iroas including Ethereal Armor. Even though I didn't draw into any removal for the hero, I did manage to put out a Herald of Torment enchanted with Ethereal Armor, and Chris got out 2 Awaken the Ancient's and a Fanatic of Mogis. We actually got down to 2 life the turn before we won. We would have actually lost if instead of casting a Dawnbringer Charioteers, the guy with the B/W deck had used Underworld Coinsmith's life-loss ability twice!

-

Round #3: Win

Probably the most fun game of the night. We played a B/G/W discard deck and a G/W enchantment/equipment deck. Chris managed to draw a ton of burn spells that helped with removal of a loleth troll, and I filled my field with Whip of Erebos, Heliod, God of the Sun, Brain Maggot, Nyx-Fleece Ram, a Gift of Orzhova, and an Ethereal Armor. I stalled out after the B/G/W deck put out an Angel of Serenity by whipping it back from the graveyeard with his Whip of Erebos, targeting my heliod, brain maggot, and ram. I cast them all again the next turn but Heliod lost his creature status because I had lost the enchantments when the angel exiled the creatures they were on. However, once again, Chris' burn spells combined with my vigilant creatures did them in and we got the win and 1st place for the night!

Alright, I know that was long, but overall we won all 3 rounds and came out splitting 11 packs of JOU between us. I did notice some small problems with my deck:

  1. Sanguine Bond needs to just go in the sideboard because most of the time it's just a dead card.

  2. While Sphere of Safety is an awesome card normally, it is almost useless in 2HG because it only prevents your opponents from attacking you, not your opponent. So next time I play this deck in 2HG, I'll trade out some cards from the sideboard for the sphere's

I can't wait to play this deck at FNM tomorrow!

+1 For what I think is a good deck. It was fun to playtest against my decks, which I played a few times each. Battle with Mogis Devotion:

It looked like Mogis was too powerful the first game against this deck, however, in the late part of the match, this deck outlasted Mogis. The second match was much of the same, however the game winner was Erebos, as he appeared and quickly became 10/12, 11/13 with flying and lifelink shortly after.

Now, it was time for a deck change Dark Devotion Drain was now against this deck. On turn 3 and 4, two of my Master of the Feast were now exiled, however their allies were strong enough to take down their foes and pull out with a close win.The second game was quite different. With two Thoughtseize played within the first 4 turns, recovery was not possible for this deck, even with Brain Maggot coming out twice.

Even though rotation is not until October, have you looked at cards that can become replacements? This deck has the core of it locked down, which will help post rotation.

Just one thing... I noticed in one of your updates that you mentioned a misplay by not playing a Whip of Erebos ability to return a creature as a blocker. You can never do that. The whip's activated ability can only be activated as a sorcery (meaning on your turn and during your main phases only). Since the creature is exiled at the end of that turn, there is no way you could get a blocker with it :) So there was no misplay there, there was nothing you could've done about it.

Tilwin What makes you think that Whip can only be used at sorcery speed?

This looks nasty to play against. Great build, well done!

Is Blood Baron of Vizkopa in consideration at all here?
