This deck is pretty much built around Ral Zarek in a modern setting because there is just so many more combos than in standard. The Gilder Bairn +
Ral Zarek
+1 ability has such great synergy. So when you drop Ral Zarek and use his +1, BOOM! You might as well double the amount of counters on him.
Another combo that I enjoy is Cold-Eyed Selkie + Vigor +
Ral Zarek
-2 ability. Because of Vigor all the damage is then translated into +1/+1 counters making him a +4/+4, and easily being able to ramp him up even more.
Rings of Brighthearth... Really!!??
Ral Zarek
+1 now becomes tap TWO target permanents, and untap TWO target permanents. Also his -2 ability can do a total of 6 damage or you can split it up to deal with multiple targets. I honestly don't know how this works with his ultimate, but oh well. Makes everything else 10x better.
I love the utility that the Bow of Nylea brings to the table, beef up a creature, kill an early flyer, heal yourself, be able to put your cards back in your deck, AND your creatures get deathtouch. What more can you ask for?
The Vexing Devil may seem a little out of place, but I don't think so when you pair it up with Forced Adaptation. Turn 3 5/4, I think the 4 life at that point would have been a better option..
Gilder Bairn + Aether Vial isn't bad either to help you get to Vigor, and play it for free. Zhur-Taa Druid isn't a bad thing in this deck either for that it taps for mana, and every time you tap it for mana it deals one damage to your opponent(s). It's a win-win paired with the +1 of
Ral Zarek
.
Obviously you would put in the rare nonbasic lands, but I was too lazy to put them in. Feedback would also be nice, hoped you liked it!
