MH3 brings big sideboard pieces —May 29, 2024

Modern Horizons 3 is bringing some interesting pieces to Spirits. All sideboard pieces but each very potent.

Once upon a time I would see Spirits decks siding Unified Will to counter bombs and wraths. Flare of Denial is just better. I think asking for a Spirit Vodalian Hexcatcher is probably a bit much. But a one shot hard counter variant is still sweet. This can duck a full wrath or a bomb threat or combo piece.

Flare of Fortitude is actually incredibly similar to Flare of Denial but instead of blanking a spell threat, it blanks board threats. I often find when playing aggro, you race your opponent until then sweep your board and you have to rebuild, likely only one more swing from winning the game. With white flare, we can sac a creature to fog an attack and hopefully pur remaining board can push lethal. We can also shrug off Engineered Explosives and the like.

Sideboard tribals spirits tend to miss on fliying, but not White Orchid Phantom. Double white can be a bit pressing but it's still a solid ghost for blowing out a Tron land, Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, Cabal Coffers or any other problem land.

While I didn't add it, Vexing Bauble looks like a piece of sideboard action (along with Urza's Saga toolbox piece) that is primed for current Modern. The implications in this card are enormous. Blanks evoke, storm, cascade, affinity, forces, flares, and the list continues for every format this thing will be legal in. I have a weakness for trying to keep the sideboard within the theme or brand of the main but certain pieces (like the flares) are simply too good to pass on. With Fury out of the format I'm going to lean towards keeping it off the list for now, but in a meta where those mechanics may be more prevalent this is one of those pieces that you may include even if it is off brand.

Very similar to my deck I'm running right now. Glasspool Mimic is a silent MVP in my opinion. Mid - Late game, its a way better draw than a land. Also Vial on 3 makes it just deadly as it doesnt benefit from rattlechains' ability. I have been playing with 3x counterspell in the MB and 3x path in the SB with some EE in the SB as well, but thats a meta choice for my LGS. I would replace Giest of Saint Traft in SB with 2x Santifier En Vec, its amazing against so many powerful decks right now. Giest is not well positioned in my opinon. I also use Void mirror vice damping sphere, very handy against pesky solitude as well as tron.

Just my thoughts, love to the spirit tribe!

Revan0287 I don’t update my SB as much as I do my MB. I have Geist of Saint Traft and Kira, Great Glass-Spinner because at the time Grixis Shadow and W/U/r Control were topping the format. Sanctifier is moderately okay against Shadow and utterly useless against Control. Perhaps the format is in a different place. I haven’t gotten out to play in quite a while but I adjust my sideboard when I do. I find discussing SB slots to be hit or miss as that is more targeted to a local meta. I’ll consider Sanctifier but will wait to play in my local meta before I make any change.

I will note that Damping Sphere is probably more effective against Tron than Void Mirror. Just because Tron runs a lot of colorless cards doesn’t mean they can’t just use colored mana while playing those spells so Void Mirror is easier for Tron to play around. Mirror is great for the MH2 Evoke Incarnations. Considering Grief and Solitude are by far the most played, an evoked Grief is probably coming out quicker than Void Mirror and I think spirits have enough resiliency between Rattlechains, Drogskol Captain, Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, and to a lesser extent Glasspool Mimic  Flip as well as Geist of Saint Traft. I think including Solitude becomes a weak argument for Mirror. But to reiterate what I said earlier about SB slots, your local meta may warrant it.

If you can afford it, I'd always go a full four Cavern of Souls. I really like this deck though

This shell is definitely light enough on non-creatures (sideboarding included) to go with a full set. Unfortunately, the price for such cardboard is not. I own two and one was out of a trade. The other I felt bad enough buying at $40. If you have the copies or play online, definitely go with the full. This list should reflect the optimal build and not just what I own. I don’t build lists that way. Thank you for the suggestion.

Cool Deck, +1 :)
4 Selfless Spirit seem too many considering that there are currently not many mass-removal spells in the meta, you could exchange 2 for Unsettled Mariner.
With 3 Cemetery Illuminator already in the maindeck you have good graveyard hate, I recommend cutting the 3rd Remorseful Cleric for a Blossoming Calm to improve your matchup against burn.
