Bogbrew Witch + Festering Newt + Sanguine Bond

Modern Counters

KoezhVukotic

Maybeboard

Creature (1)

Sorcery (1)

This is a deck I have been tempted to do ever since I saw Festering Newt . I have just put it together on here and haven't played it or even have most of the cards yet but if it looks like it will work and be fun I probably will get it.

The idea is it themed around Witches and creatures of the bog hence the Leechridden Swamp and the Black Cat . The deck revolves around sacrificing Festering Newt using Bubbling Cauldron after giving it persist from Cauldron of Souls to activate its -4/-4 twice and also activate Blowfly Infestation . Doing so will also cause opponents to lose 4 life and give me their total in life gain while Sanguine Bond redirects that lifegain to a single player for big damage. Then once I sacrifice the Festering Newt or any other creature I bring them back with Reanimate

Also if my thinking is right and I have a Blowfly Infestation and make all opposing 1/1, 2/1 etc creatures have persist then I can kill them all as the Festering Newt will die with a -1/-1 which will put a counter on a 1/1 which will create another counter and so on until they are all dead. So theoretically one newt could kill all creatures with T1 on the board and one with T9 or less. Not bad for a 1 drop! Have I got that right?

What do you guys think? At the moment it is theoretical and I am open to suggestions or even dropping it if you think it won't work.

Updates Add

Having used the deck several times I have found that the Persist from Cauldron of Souls with the Blowfly Infestation rarely came off. I also found that single large creatures were difficult to remove. As a result of this I have taken out Cauldron of Souls and Blowfly Infestation and replaced with 4x Corrupt and 2x Liturgy of Blood for extra removal, damage and lifegain, making even more use of Sanguine Bond, which is the card which wins me most games. I also went with Read the Bones for a bit of random draw.

This won't work. If a 1/1 comes back with persist it hits the board as a 0/0 and promptly dies due to state-based.

If you replace Cauldron of Souls with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed you'll get the desired result though

Thanks for the reply TehCoopeh

That is the point of using persist though. I sac a newt then bring it back for it to die again to use its -4/-4 ability twice and trigger Blowfly Infestation and then bring it back with Reanimate

Or are you saying that the mechanics wont work because of coming into play already with T0? Im not that hot on the more unusual rules like this as i havent used them before and am still fairly new to the game

Oh yeah then it should work fine. I thought you wanted to be able to sac it to Bubbling Cauldron twice

Thanks TehCoopeh

That's good then! Just wanted to make sure my understanding of the mechanics was correct.

I may do it twice in a turn depending on how many of both cauldrons and how many newts I have but would probably just use the other newts to save tapping another cauldron of souls if I have two out so I can use it in the opponent's turn for defence.

give the newt persist, sac it to the cauldron, then it comes back into play...

now because it's toughness is a 1, when it gets the -1/-1 counter it WILL die immediately.

If you want it to live so you can sac it repeatedly, you need to follow TehCoopeh 's advice and add Mikaeus, the Unhallowed so that the -1/-1 counter and the +1/+1 counter cancel each other out.

Yeah like I said before it dying immediately is the point of the deck. Mikaeus would be a useful addition from a competetive perspective however I could still only sacrifice it as many times as I have Bubbling Cauldrons and with Bogbrews I will usually have lots of Newts out anyway.

Plus doing so would not activate Blowfly Infestation or give me a free second -4/-4 per Newt. Plus I have 8 graveyard recursion spells anyway so won't run out of rats.

And a corrupted zombie priest isn't in keeping with the theme of a coven of witches in the swamps and for me retaining a theme to my decks is important. Just like I didn't add Ogre Slumlord to my rat deck because he's not a rat.

But thanks anyway :)

Awesome deck.

You might want to add these cards to your deck.Unearth : In this deck its basically a Reanimate with Cycling unless you have the need to revive Bogbrew Witch .Call to the Netherworld : In case of discard decks. Its basically a Disentomb with Madness since you only have black creatures.Blood Artist : Helps to get more damage through.

Thanks UnknownDemon those look like some useful cards. I have swapped Call to the Netherworld for the Reanimate to make the deck modern legal, which I usually try to keep to.

Unearth also looks good and may get that at some point if I go away from modern legal cards again.

Blood Artist would be an incredibly effective card with this deck with each creature dying twice, especially if I get the Blowfly Infestation Cauldron of Souls combo going on lots of 1/1 creatures. I haven't put it in yet as I want to see how the deck runs in its original format before I change it too much, however if I feel I need to up the power level this is the first card I will put in :)
