Anhelo, the Painter

Legendary Creature — Vampire Assassin

Deathtouch

The first instant or sorcery spell you cast each turn has casualty 2. (As you cast that spell, you may sacrifice a creature with power 2 or greater. When you do, copy the spell and you may choose new targets for the copy.)

"the idea off playing a bunch removal and boardwipe seems funny" and "I don't like the idea of people getting salty about my stuff" are kinda opposing thoughts. If you are planning on leaning heavily into playing a lot of removal and board wipes, then be prepared for people getting salty.

I'd recommend checking out Anhelo, the Painter as an option for combo/control that you might be looking for. His need for sacrificial bodies for Casualty helps put some balance limit on him.

I had a similar feeling when I was brewing and piloting Anhelo, the Painter. Spellslinger isn't as much my cup of tea, but I'm always interested in seeing new design space exploration. I have no doubt you'll find your groove for this deck as you get your reps in. I also have lengthy Maybe boards, but it's mostly for a quick reference for future swaps.

It's kind of a funky one, but if you need more draw, I'd recommend checking out Pulse of the Grid. It's from a cycle with Pulse of the Forge. Both are kinda situational and hoop-jumpy, but have that pseudo Buyback potential.

I wonder if the new subtype would be like an option to cast the instant/sorcery spell as a Manifest creature instead. Idk, I'm definitely intrigued, but hope it isn't something like Lesson.

Crow_Umbra on Table Talk and Secret Choices

Ooo Prisoner's Dilemma is such a fun design. It's a card I would have thrown into my old Anhelo, the Painter deck, had I not taken it apart.

I took a quick look at the card page for Prisoner's Dilemma on Scryfall. Based on the rulings listed there, you could have enforced no table talk.

"To secretly vote, each player writes down their chosen option without showing it to anyone else. Each player then keeps their vote secret until all players simultaneously reveal their votes. "

Here's some additional info from the Vote mechanic wiki page.

I play Council's Judgment in a couple of decks, and try to encourage the secrecy aspect of it as much as I can. If I cast it when I'm already ahead, I fully expect the rest of the table to vote for a single target that will be least detrimental to them lol.

I think Red/Black is a great core to have as a component of "evilness". The third color gives you different flavors of villainy.

  • Malik, Grim Manipulator - Especially if the Universes Beyond version isn't your cup of tea.

  • Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip/Awaken the Blood Avatar  Flip - For a different flavor of Evil Wizard that isn't Grixis.

  • Anhelo, the Painter / Lord Xander, the Collector - If you want a different flavor of Grixis beyond "Evil Wizard". From having played Anhelo, he's a weird mix of spellslinger and Aristocrats that kinda pushes and pulls between the archetypes.

  • Henzie "Toolbox" Torre - Henzie is more amoral than evil in lore. From consistently playing against my best friend's Henzie deck, this is definitely a commander that can consistently become the arch enemy of games. Highly recommend him for how explosive he can be.

  • Laughing Jasper Flint - Play a bunch of Outlaws and twirl your imaginary mustache. Olivia, Opulent Outlaw adds white and all the support and excellent removal options from it.

  • Prosper, Tome-Boundfoil - Prosper seems more like an amoral Warlock, than actually evil. Regardless, Prosper has quite a reputation, and can turn into an archenemy at tables. I used to play him, and didn't expect him to get nearly as much Treasure and Impulse/Exile play support as he did since his debut. He could also be a value piece in Jasper Flint or Olivia, since Warlocks are Outlaws.

  • Jon Irenicus, Shattered One - Another different flavor of Evil Wizard. Can be a fun kind of evil depending on the creatures you donate to your opponents.

Just a handful of options I can think of off the top of my head.

BrickMaster28 on Strive Mechanic

In my deck I am running Harness by Force and Anhelo, the Painter. If I cast Harness by Force as the first sorcery of my turn and I pay the strive cost ({2}{R} + {1}{R}{R}) to target a second creature, then sacrifice an appropriate creature to copy it (since Anhelo gives it Casualty 2) - what spell would get copied?

Would the copy be with the strive cost (to target two creatures) or without the strive cost (to target one creature)?

Thank you in advance for your help!

No prob Profet93! I've used Seize the Spotlight before in my Anhelo, the Painter deck that eventually got recycled into this one. Seize the Spotlight definitely has that additional bit of upside, since my meta tends to skew a bit more aggro/go wide. I've used Lazotep Plating in another older deck, and liked the corner case protection of giving myself Hexproof on some occasions.

I'm waiting for the most recent Ixalan cards to hit the site, but a change that I am making to the deck is replacing Genasi Enforcers with Saheeli, the Sun's Brilliance. I've liked making token copies with her ability when I've play-tested so far.

I would like to point out Rootha, Mercurial Artist as yet another way to copy your spells. I use her next to Anhelo, the Painter and she ends up being a juge power house for me.

UltimateRoxas40, an alternative to Bitterblossom that I've been considering is Black Market Connections. I do have a copy available since I recently took apart my Anhelo, the Painter deck to free up its pieces to build this deck.
