Quickspell on Does this Dragon‘s Approach combo …
8 months ago
While playtesting I discovered this combo, allowing me to exile my whole deck and play all Dragon's Approach cards in it. Does it work?
Cards on the battlefield:
- Locket of Yesterdays
- Birgi, God of Storytelling
Flip or Runaway Steam-Kin
- Virtue of Courage
Cards in graveyard:
- Dragon's Approach
- Dragon's Approach
Cards in hand:
- Dragon's Approach
I cast Dragon's Approach for because of the Locket of Yesterdays‘ cost reduction. This causes Birgi, God of Storytelling Flip to produce and Virtue of Courage to exile nine cards. From among those I can play any Dragon’s Approach practically for free as Birgi reimburses any spent. At the end I have my whole library exiled with Virtue, but I only die if I would have to draw a card. So, at the beginning of my next upkeep or instantly to a Ancestral Recall.
But as long as I don’t draw a card, I can cast all Dragon‘s Approaches in my deck.
With Runaway Steam-Kin this should work too, as long as I can repeatedly cast three Dragon‘s Approaches.
Am I missing something?

RiotRunner789 Thank you for the suggestions! While Thrumming Stone is an absolute wincon, Spellweaver Helix and Locket of Yesterdays are important targets for Beacon of Unrest, too. I will put it on the testing list. Phyrexian Arena is too slow I think, as well as Dark Confidant, who will also kill me before I do my opponents. The same goes for the other options, this deck barely has time to cast anything other than Dragon’s Approach. I do like Erebos, God of the Dead, as he will most likely always remain an indestructible enchantment. The life gain hate is great, too.

Correct, you can exile both and then when you cast a Dragon's Approach you get to cast Jeska's Will for free with the spellweaver. Then this is where the luck comes in a bit, if you exile a Dragons Approach with the Jeskas Will exile 3 option you can cast that Dragons Approach with the Mana from the first line of Jeskas Will and repeat the process.
Yes, I believe I have gotten that combo off before. More commonly I will get a few pieces that add up to the same effect. The most common lately has been Locket of Yesterdays + Spellweaver Helix with Seize the Spoils and Dragon's Approach. The locket reduces the cost to 1 red which you spend the treasure from spoils on to keep the chain going, its potentially infinite depending on how unlucky you get with the draws. You can also use the dragons approach castings to cycle your hand with Knollspine Dragon to improve your odds by getting a new hand full of dragons approaches.

Nice deck! I really like the idea of playing a lot of Rat Colony in EDH because it's so unique, you know? Really awesome stuff.
I'm not sure, but maybe Locket of Yesterdays might be neat. Probably not a worldbeater, but it can get some value for your rats maybe.
And there are definitely some shenanigans that Maralen can get up to as a commander. Giving your cards flash with something like Vedalken Orrery Winding Canyons Emergence Zone to flash her in on an opponent's endstep and get the first tutor is amazing. Getting Opposition Agent with maralen is almost game over. She also can pair well with stacks and things. If your opponents can't cast things because you put down a well timed Winter Orb then they can't do much. I've seen games go down to Maralen's life loss killing people : )
And maybe some ways to get rats through for damage. I'm not really sure what would be the most effective, but even just swords and protection or equipments to give evasion. Not really sure on this, but there might be some good options out there. Marrow-Gnawer is great, but maybe more options?
Anyways, looks awesome! Hope it's a fun deck to play.

Birgi, God of Storytelling Flip should be in the deck so you can chain her with Locket of Yesterdays or Storm-Kiln Artist when you cast your Approaches.
The tests I've ran on my deck show that Birgi is probably one of the more important cards in the Torbran/Approach deck. And you can get away with the value engine behind it as well.
As you saw on my list, I'm running the Birgi/Ignus combo for basically Bolt-shot storm as a back up win condition. I'm not saying to run the Ignus combo, but Birgi at least should be set onto your list for the mana efficiency to cast another Dragons Approach when you have Locket of Yesterday in play.
