Want to build mono-black control

Standard Deck Help forum

Planning on building my first non-budget standard deck, and want to play mono black (maybe weave in some blue) because it's my favorite color in magic. Anyone able to help me out?

Maybe something like one of these lists? Of course Kalitas here rotates unfortunately soon :(

Mono-Black Control is about to lose most of its really good pieces:

It will still retain Fatal Push, Never / Return, Harsh Scrutiny, and Yahenni's Expertise, and it will have the new Walk the Plank, but unless it gets some better 2 drops it's going to lose all tempo in the early game.

If you add into the mix it will be more viable, as you will get Essence Scatter, and Negate.

After rotation Mono B looks like pretty bad, it all depends what comes from Ixalan. So much of good removal rotates out.

So yeah, basically choose something else to build is my advice.

Lol, thanks guys. Think there are a few good pieces coming in Ixalan including a couple of decent two drops.

Yeah the addition of Duress, Vanquish the Weak, Heartless Pillage, Fathom Fleet Cutthroat, and Vraska's Contempt have all made Control more viable.

I would still suggest Control due to Hostage Taker.

How good is that freaking card?
