Rhys vs Trostani, who's Best?

Commander Deck Help forum

Rhys the Redeemed and Trostani, Selesnya's Voice are both excellent token generating commanders that I love. But I can't pick between them.

TSV

Pros: Lifegain like crazy. Big Butt.

Cons: Specific Mana. Not Aggressive.

RTR

Pros: Always T1 playable, built-in Doubling Season.

Cons: 1 Toughness, immediate target.

Help please?

Hi there, do you like combos? How about aggro? Tribal? Winning? All of the above? Then Rhys the Redeemed might be right for you.

In all seriousness, though, Rhys is simply better. Yes, he is much smaller, but most people aren't using removal that is toughness based (or if they are, it's mass removal like Mutilate or something really big anyways like Tragic Slip) and you probably aren't going to involve him in combat until such a point that he won't be dying anyways, like with (insert large number here) tokens and a Craterhoof Behemoth trigger.

Rhys can double every token you control, whereas Tristan can only copy one. Definitely Rhys.

I just like the protection of lots of life. But you guys are probably right.

You can always put Trostani in the Rhys deck.

True, just not consistent Lifegain. Good points all!

Well, if you want a deck that can generally combo out before anyone can start touching your life total, can I suggest my own Rhys the Redeemed deck, Well, it's TECHNICALLY Mono-Green as a base. It's a bit expensive at the moment, but taking out the Eldrazis, Survival of the Fittest, Cavern of Souls, and Gaea's Cradle will cut the price down by a lot without removing much in the ways of consistency. Some, just because of the loss of the best creature tutor ever, but not much.

I've played Trostani for a while and she's a lot of fun. There's a few hilarious things you can do with her lifegain and her cheaper-to-use copying ability. But she is certainly the weaker commander for reasons already stated.

Also, lifegain isn't good in EDH unless you're going to abuse it. You'll still die to 21 commander or 10 poison, so it's best seen as a resource to be spent (Phyrexian Processor, Sylvan Library) or turned to create other advantages (Well of Lost Dreams, Archangel of Thune).

Trostani's big butt has helped me on occasion, by the way. Still not as good as Rhys crapping out tons of chump blockers.

I've actually considered changing my Trostani deck to Rhys. Ghave is more likely, but ItchiUchiha117 does make a tempting case...

Those are the exact four cards I love about the deck! But it also bothers me to have a split focus on Lifegain and Token Production.

My deck is already Trostani and I don't play super competitive games but if Rhys is just better? Tough choices. Though I also could shift cards from Trostani to Ghave...

You should play what you enjoy, I think. In a more laid-back group you can do that.

I actually used to play a Trostani deck. The natural evolution for it, I felt, was making it into a Ghave, Guru of Spores deck. The only reason I can think of not to would be the rather high price tag attached to a lot of the cards.
