ComradeJim270 Chillin' with my tribes

I'm a pretty new player (started February 2015) but enjoying this game a lot and play frequently enough that people are often shocked when I tell them that. There's always plenty of room for improvement, though. I joined TappedOut to help me improve my game by letting me see what other people are doing and maybe getting suggestions from more skilled players. That plan is working out well so far.

While I'm often down for a good kitchen table game and will play Limited now and then, my main loves are EDH and Modern. I love the unpredictable zaniness of EDH and am always finding new legendary creatures that excite me. I'm a big fan of the pace and diversity of Modern and have been having a lot of fun with elves and merfolk. I adore all things tribal, and nearly all of my competitive decks reflect that.

I'd consider Tarkir my "home block" since this is where I started. Like a lot of players that gives me a special, sentimental attachment to it. As a result I'm especially interested in wedges, enemy colors (which are just wedges minus a color), and just generally like the mechanics, theme and flavor of it. That said, as an EDH player I work with stuff from throughout Magic's history and am especially drawn to stuff from the two Ravnica-based blocks too.

Magic is something of a social thing for me. I'm not super-competitive in terms of attitude and like to get to know other players, talk shop with them and laugh about all the stupid, crazy stuff we're doing or planning to do. I don't go to FNM with a very different mindset from a purely casual game. On that note: I'm happy to meet new folks, leave a message here if you like.

If you want to know more, I've conveniently divided the page into collapsible sections to mitigate my tendency for extreme verbosity!

This has changed over time. I'm a Timmy-Spike. Fun and social interaction are very important to me. They got me into the game and are what ultimately keep me playing, but I do enjoy winning and the process of tuning my decks to maximize my chances of victory. If I am winning but not having fun, or having fun but not winning, I'll tend to get bored pretty quickly.

I do still have a Johnny side that comes up when I try clever little tweaks to my decks, or excites me when I find something cunning and unexpected to do. This tends to be complementary to my Spike/Timmy side rather than opposed to it, but occasionally (especially in Limited) I'll do something silly just for giggles even if it's not the optimal choice.

Some people identify strongly with particular colors, archetypes, etc. I don't. Aggro, control, midrange, combo or "what the hell are you doing!?"... all archetypes and all colors are fun as long as I get to do the things I love. I have preferences, but they don't rule anything out. If I had to be specific, I'm mainly an aggro (especially aggro-control) player in constructed. and a combo player in EDH. But I love to mix it up. My least preferred archetype is control. I like my control in smaller doses as a way to get there with aggro or combo strategies. Tempo decks and other interactive aggro decks are my jam!

Versatility and flexibility are a big deal for me, which is why I'm a fan of decks with a sort of toolkit feel to them. When I do faster decks I still want to have tricks up my sleeve. I can't stand it when games go the same way every time. I ask more of my decks and more of my games. I want each one to be a little epic of its own. A good game of magic is like a little story and it should have some dramatic tension.

I have a soft spot for weenies. Creatures with a CMC higher than 6 feel very awkward and clunky to me, while I get very interested in cheap creatures that work well together. That gives me a real soft spot for tribal decks. So far I've done Elves, Merfolk, Goblins, Warriors, Allies and Humans across varying formats and loved them all. Any deck that has a reason to run Cavern of Souls has my attention.

Some people have pointed out to me that I tend to enjoy playing mindgames with my opponents. This probably has a lot to do with the environment I started playing in, with a very Johnny attitude and a preference for multiplayer. Pushing opponents into unfavorable situations, letting them think I'm trying to do one thing instead of another, or playing politics in multiplayer are all very appealing to me. If I can break someone's expectations, I feel pretty good about the game.

Suggestions on how to accomplish these are welcome, comment away!

  • Stop being terrible at Limited. If you'd seen me play Limited, you'd know this is a hell of a tall order.
  • Understand what the hell I'm doing in Modern. How do I understand the metagame? How do I evaluate cards? I'm getting better at it; any Merfolk pilot particularly needs to know this stuff.
  • Make an EDH deck with a khan (likely FRF) in the command zone. Alesha, Who Smiles at Death and Yasova Dragonclaw are the main candidates.
  • Put together a planar deck, because Planechase is awesome.
  • Brew up some absurd kitchen table stuff. Maybe tune Murder-Dragons or Grave Matters for it. Or make a deck with four copies of Sol Ring.
  • Create lists for all the commanders in the section right below this one!

The following commanders interest me for possible future EDH decks. This list changes as some ideas fall out of favor and others occur to me. If you have ideas for them, I'd love to hear it!:

  • Teysa, Orzhov Scion: Token-y, combo-y, goodness? Sign me up! A low-curve combo deck seems like the way to go.
  • King Macar, the Gold-Cursed: There is no question that I'm going to build a deck around this guy some day. It's a real challenge, but making a crazy artifact shenanigans deck is the way to go.
  • Sygg, River Guide : Tribal? With plenty of combo potential and tempo-y shenanigans? I'm quite interested.
  • Alesha, Who Smiles at Death: I've decided I want to do a three color deck sometime. Also that I want to have a Tarkir block commander. I like these colors. Also, weenies and reanimator. Hell, yeah! I could do some sort of aggro thing, but plenty of ETB trigger abuse is even more appealing.
  • Edric, Spymaster of Trest: I think I could build a tempo-oriented aggro-control deck with him. Spew out tons of weenies and beat down with counterspell backup! Sounds fun.
  • Zedruu the Greathearted: Group hug? Nope. Group _slug_. Sometime, I'd like to build a Zedruu list that tries to force the entire table into mindless aggression and punishes them for every action they take.

I figured out some criteria which if met make me want to play a deck. Just some themes that really catch my interest. I like it when a deck does at least some of this:

  • Scoops to a resolved Ugin, the Spirit Dragon.
  • Runs or . Or both.
  • Has a good reason to run Cavern of Souls
  • Doesn't have more than three colors. Three colors with one enemy, because YAY, WEDGES! Four and five color is for people who are scared of commitment.
  • Causes people to die to their own cards.
  • Has a lot of cards with the word "exile" on them.
  • Archetype must be described with a hyphen: control-combo, aggro-control, etc.
  • Makes opponents go "why are you running that?", and then demonstrates exactly why.
  • Dies to a resolved Rakdos Charm.

Oh, I see! Let me know if you try it out.

Really digging the maindeck Mindcensor, I've found it to be excellent. What's your experience with Bob?

My land base is almost identical to yours, but I run one less Vent and a Wastes as an out to Blood Moon.
